I've been coming here every summer for many, many years. Gary and his family always make us feel so welcome. The place is always very clean inside and out. The pool is amazing as well as the community fire pit. The place is on the older side but I'll take clean, relaxing and comfortable over modern amenities any day. This place is a gem!

Accommodations were modest and clean. surroundings and grounds are pleasant for relaxing out doors. Rooms are adequate for a couple but not large enough to bring children unless infants. Rates are fair and the management was pleasant.

Me and my family go here every summer and we love it! The rooms are always very clean. There is a pool that we love to lounge around all day. The owners make us feel like family. And if you like camping atmosphere, but do not like to camp, this place feels like camping at night. There is a fire pit out front and everyone who stays there can roast marshmellows and tell stories. There is a short path to the beach and you can sit out on the beach at night and look at the million stars in the sky. It is a great place and I look forward to going up there every summer.

If you don't mind a old, hard, spring mattress go for it!
Rooms are VERY dated! Shower is a SMALL cube with no light. If you are a larger size person, I would avoid. My boyfriend is a little large and had a heck of a time showering.
Rooms have a musty "old" smell. Furniture is waaayyy outdated, needs replacing.
Our mattress had a "crunching" sound everytime we moved- not a good night sleep!
Didn't use the pool.

If you're in a pinch and need a place it would do, but def not a comfortable stay.

i have stayed at the sun n sand motel over the last 3 years or so. i usually stay on 3-8 weekends each year. mostly in the summer and early fall, when the salmon fishing is good. the pool is heated and clean and feels great after being on the water all day. the rooms are not fancy but are always very clean and everything is in working order. and the location is perfect only a little over a mile west of town. the owners live on site and always greet the guests with a smile. keeps me coming back!!

If you want a clean- almost pristine place to stay this is it. The room was basic bed and bath...not fancy, but perfect for what I wanted. I also enjoyed the pool.
The motel has a very friendly enviroment and as a single woman I felt very safe.

We recently spent one weekday night here, right before the big weekend of Cheeseburger in Caseville Festival. The night was hectic and this small motel was about the only place left that had a room, and they still had their sign on late at night. Owners are very, very friendly, helpful people. We paid $84-which is a lot for the room you get, but I imagine all the rooms in town were on the expensive side. The room itself is very basic-queen bed (that is not the most comfortable, but the pillows were the worst ...), a desk/chair, one armchair, dresser/TV stand. Old decor, but that is actually somewhat charming...the bathroom was all tiled and kept up nicely (shower only, no tub in this room). There is a window A/C; but you can still open the windows if you so choose-not many motels or hotels allow that nowadays. Very clean. There is a heated pool; there is a nice firepit area and large lawn with picnic table to gather on. I highly recommend this small family owned motel in Port Austin.

This is a nice motel just out of Port Austin. The owners were friendly and recommended some local restaurants and things to do upon check in. We had a one queen bed room, which included cable TV, A/C, use of the pool and fire pit, beach access (short walk across the street), and coffee in the morning. The price was excellent ($85/ night during peak season). The room and bathroom were very clean. If you are particular about shampoo and conditioner, be sure to bring something from home.

You need to bring your own beach towels if you plan on using the pool or the beach.

There was no wifi in this motel and our phones were on extended service during our time in the Port Austin area. Be sure to bring a charger because your battery will drain quickly during your stay in the thumb.

Upon arriving, I noticed ashtrays lining the window edge of every room. (I should have taken that cue and moved on to another hotel.) When one goes up north, fresh air is ideal. Unfortunately, we had to shut our windows and utilize the a/c unit. Our neighbor not only had a "cig" outside his room every 30 minutes, but continued to remind us that smoking is un-healthy by coughing and hacking up phlegm, then spitting it onto the ground (yes, I could hear it smack on the ground). This spell of his continued through the night and into the early morning. TIP #1: allow smoking 50 feet from rooms. Create a designated smoking area. The second challenge of this hotel was that the TV was LITERALLY hanging by a twist-tie from the wall mount. This posed a safety hazard...especially for my 2 & 6 year old girls. Thankfully, my husband was able to lift it off the wall mount and place it on a chair. TIP #2: check your rooms for obvious safety issues. The last thing I want to mention is that the people who run this hotel are extremely nice folks. The pool and the charm of the folks who run it give this place it's stars. I marked it down solely for the fact of our sleepless night, too close for comfort smoking areas and dangerous TV mounts. One last recommendation would be to provide guests with a small map (literally, just a copy of a drawn out map) of where to eat and where to swim. Pointing to an area across the street made us feel uneasy...we didn't understand where exactly public swimming was allowed. Also, we didn't know about going to Caseville, ect., for beach experience. It would have been nice to know where we could rent boats for Turnip Rock access. I feel like we missed out on everything the thumb had to offer ;-(. Needless to say, we will not be back.
