I've stayed here several times in the past, it's a pretty nice place and the rates are fairly reasonable but it takes a l-o-n-g time for them to check you even if your alone, really long if there are people checking in besides yourself. And if it's raining you'll get wet because it's located in a separate building. The first room I got had an inoperative air conditioner, the second room they gave me a key to was already occupied ( oops...sorry ), the third one I got was a lakefront view...well it was on the lake side and you could see a little of the lake. It was an upgrade for all the bother I went thru, all I wanted to do was sleep.
BEWARE this motel has a 72 hour cancellation policy. We couldn't find the casino that had our reservation, so stayed last minute at the Aurora Borealis. The next morning we called the front desk to ask if we could check out because the other hotel had contacted us. We were told yes before 11. We were out before 10 but charged for two nights. When I called about it, they told us about the 72 hour cancellation policy.
I arrived at about 11:45pm two nights ago and was exhausted. I picked up my key and headed to my room. I set my things on the bed and went to the restroom. Upon returning to my bag on the bed, I saw an adult bedbug crawling on my hat which was next to my bag. I grabbed my hat and ran towards the door. After dumping the bedbug outside, I was at a loss about what to do because it was so late; my only viable options were to try to find another place to stay or sleep in my car. I should add that from 2009-2014 I worked in hospitality in Michigan and I was taught how to identify bedbugs at any stage of life from infancy to adulthood and I learned the different colors they could be, based on how recently they had sucked someone’s blood. I was not just overreacting about some random insect; it was definitely a bedbug. The college student who worked at the Aurora Borealis Motel (that I woke up when I called the emergency number listed on the office door) was nice and tried to be as helpful as possible but she had a hard time reaching management at first. Once I had been given a refund, I went and spent the night in my car, a most unpleasant experience. I just wish I knew if the management took this seriously or not, or if it’s a known problem they are trying to ignore. Most bedbugs hide in the corners of bedsheets, etc, and are not easily seen at first but since this one must have been out in the open ON TOP of the comforter, it may be a bigger issue here. This is my first time staying in a hotel in over a year-and-a-half due to the pandemic (and I certainly do not have bedbugs at home) so there’s no other explanation for the appearance of this bedbug other than there must be an outbreak at this motel. Thanks to the college student from Jamaica for all her help as I checked out as quickly as possible; needless to say I will not be coming back.…
Great room for a very reasonable price! It was clear that updates had recently been made and care was given to the premises. The room was very clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful and I would definitely stay here again!
My wife and I discussed for years that if we were to stay in a motel in Saint Ignace, Michigan. It would be the Aurora Borealis. It was a pity to find certain, nearby businesses closed due to the covid-19 situation. However with the grocery and convenience stores and gas stations close by. Coming and going so near to Mackinaw Bridge was exactly what I needed. My room was fine, clean and the staff was very enjoyable. The room rate was extremely affordable. My thanks to the Aurora!
