For starters, Susan, the owner, is notably friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable about the area (attractions to visit and history). Her passion about history, especially the food history of Northern Michigan is somewhat contagious. She is willing to converse with you whenever you want to and is also very respectful of the fact that there may be times that you would rather not.... More

Approaching Hillside Homestead, you notice a modest but well kept farmhouse. Inside you are greeted by Susan, the charming owner, a clean, period furnished home away from home, and the warmth of the fire in the wood stove. Every detail in this farmstead is carefully considered and Susan is a wealth of trivia about cooking and surviving before modern conveniences.... More

Amazing location. Amazing service. Amazing home and farm. The best part was farmer owner, Susan. Her generous hospitality and warmth went beyond our expectations. My 5 year old son snot cried the day we had to leave. I think that says it all. We will definitely go back!

This is NOT a normal bed and breakfast. Don't expect it to be! Everything the other reviews say are all true. You will share the yard with chickens, ducks and a goose. Depending on the season there might also be pigs and goats/sheep. if your lucky you might be able to let the chickens out in the morning! We love... More

As with all the other reviews we were blown away by this place. Susan (the proprietor) is interesting, smart, fun, witty, good company and discrete when you feel like some down time. Exactly what a great host should be. The room (We were in the Maple room) is beautiful, everything appropriate for 1900ish except where you need modern (double glazed... More

Walking in, we were greeted by Susan and immediately felt at home when she pulled fresh vanilla cookies out of her wood burning oven, made from a 1909 recipe. They were made with lard and they were delicious! Susan was a pure delight, filled with all sorts of stories and experiences that makes this B & B so unique. Our... More

Hillside Homestead is an amazing place to stay in the northern Traverse City/Suttons Bay/Leeland area. Susan is such a wonderful and gracious host and you can tell she thoroughly enjoys what she does. The overall experience is one of a kind. Set on an old farm, the house decor is from the early 1900's, the room was very clean, and... More

Tucked away amidst apple orchards lies an experience more akin to time travel than a weekend b and b. Oil lamps set the house aglow in the evening and Susan's delicious and period authentic cooking makes you feel invited into another world. Chickens roam the yard and supply eggs for Susan's breakfasts and remarkable pound cake. All is cooked on... More
