Quaint cozy hotel in the middle of Northfield. Friendly staff close to everything and tight on the river. Anyone visiting Carleton or St. Olaf College should stay here. Tavern restaurant is part of the hotel and awesome. I'd stay here again if I ever came back.

The Archer House River Inn was so much fun. It has a lot of history, and we enjoyed all the characteristics that an old historic building inherits. At night we had a drink in the small pub area; taking in the music and very friendly locals. In the morning we took a tunnel-like path down to a fantastic breakfast in...

This is a lovely historic hotel, very conveniently located and with a good restaurant (The Tavern) onsite. The downside: Very thin walls and doors, which have the capacity to affect the privacy of not only yourself, but everyone on either side and across the hall from you. If you are looking for a "romantic time away", I would suggest a...

We chose to stay at the Archer House when visiting Carleton based on its locatio and the fact that it is in an old building rather than a cookie cutter chain. It delivered on both of those fronts. It couldn't be more convenient to campus or the main street of Northfield. It goes downhill from there. The hallways are in...

Had a very large two-bed room overlooking the Cannon River. Heater kept the room toasty warm. Hotel has real character--not like cookie-cutter interchangeable post-war hotel chains--down to the "drop-in-any-mailbox" actual room keys (not key cards). There's a minimalist 24-hour exercise room w/one apiece of treadmill, elliptical, and stationary bike. Breakfast in the Tavern restaurant on the ground floor was inexpensive...

This was our first trip to Northfield. We found the hotel's history to be interesting and enjoyed the shops and restaurants attached. The rooms vary in size and charm. If you are looking for special ambiance, ask when making your reservation about the charm and decor of your room. We walked the hallway when cleaning was going on and got...

Fist time stay. Traveling with my Dad from Minneapolis to visit family for Thanksgiving. Reserved an executive room with two queen beds on 3rd floor. Room had a step down to bathroom which presented a bit of a challenge for my 88 year old Dad. Also the bed height was unusually tall which again presented challenges for getting in and...

We stayed here while visiting Carleton College with our daughter. The hotel is very close to campus and its Division Street location allowed us to explore this charming town with ease. Lots of adorable shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and even good cupcakes. The river is beautiful too! So much charm! Our room was spacious--big comfy beds, big bathroom, and a...

Wonderfully friendly people; quaint setting on a delightful street in Northfield and the most comfortable beds! The Indian restaurant just off the lobby offered a great night's dinner. We had a lovely stay while we were touring colleges in Northfield.

We travel a lot ...but the Archer House rented us the worst room ever for $130 last night ...Old double bed barely fit in room with a foot to spare on each side. Louvered shutter was bathroom door. The small old fashioned tub had a pipe shower but shower head had all inner parts removed and water just came out...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Archer House River Inn occupies more than a central location in Northfield. For generations of guests and locals, it IS Northfield - a geographical and architectural landmark, a host to history for nearly 140 years, and an exemplar of the town's spirit of hospitality. Built in the French Second Empire style, the four-story red brick building is grand in design, rich in character, and impressive in its amenities - which include two full-service restaurants, a coffee shop, riverside lounge, conference space and more. Yet with just 36 rooms, no two of which are identical, the inn is intimate in scale and unique in feel. The Archer House also boasts the city's best location, straddling the town's main thoroughfare and the Cannon River. Beyond its prominent setting and venerable history, something else makes the Archer House special: a spirit reflected by the staff's pride in upholding a 140-year legacy of caring for guests, and the ownership's loving stewardship of a property that embodies the heart and soul of Northfield. ... more   less
