Words cant express how absolutely blown away we were by this place! It is utterly gorgeous and we felt so privileged to be able to stay in this incredible mansion. We stayed in the Romeo and Juliet suite which was spacious, immaculate, and beautifully appointed. There is a jacuzzi bath right in the room made elegant by the addition of...

Isobel was a delightful hostess. The B and B was restored to perfection. Great breakfast. My friend and I felt we had stepped back in time. I sober gave us recommendations for dinner. We loved it. Room was spacious, two queen beds, and had special touches. I highly recommend.

My wife and I stayed at the Shakespeare Chateau last Halloween when we came to St. Joseph to visit the Pony Express Museum (a bucket list item from my boyhood days) and avoid the trick-or-treaters at home. The Chateau is a marvelous old mansion (circa 1880's, I think), not to far from downtown, that the hostess has largely restored to...

When my nephew told me he was getting married in St. Joseph on New Year's Eve, I immediately went to TripAdvisor to find a B&B -- St. Joe is not known for its hotels. We found a wonderfully restored mansion and a proprietor who was an astute preservationist. The "Twelfth Night" room was very comfortable and the en suite bathroom...

We came here to visit local relatives. The place is wonderful, it's like living in a Disney Castle only not as tacky. The proprietor is charming and attentive and will leave you alone when you feel like being left alone. Breakfast was great. For a different experience from the usual motel six, if you need to be in this area,...

Sumptuous Victorian Mansion that pulls out all the stops. Impressive and jaw-dropping architecture. Service by Inn owner, Isobel, will have you spoiled. Warm and inviting, I cannot recommend it more highly.

The Shakespeare B&B is spectacular! The owner is committed & skilled preservationist, & all the work that was done to restore this palatial home is stunning. And she has a very skilled general contractor. The front porch is “eye-candy up close”, & the view across the street to the red Harvey Ellis mansion is a joy. Isobel made us feel...

Isobel made sure our stay was comfortable and cozy. The breakfast was delicious, and the house itself was indescribable. The chateau is a Gilded Age mansion in St Joseph MO, and is lovingly restored. Its like living in a history lesson on the 1890's. Want to experience how the elites of that era lived (with the advantages of modern bathrooms,...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The majestic Shakespeare Chateau was built in 1885 by Nathan Ogden when St. Joseph Missouri was known as "The Queen of the River Cities." High atop a bluff looking down across the city toward the Missouri River, 809 Hall Street is one of several mansions in the Hall Street Historic District known locally as "Millionaires' Row." You'll enjoy meeting the friendly innkeeper, Isobel, as she takes you through the palatial interior. You'll marvel at 47 (yes, 47!) Original stained glass windows, carved cherrywood, mahogany, and walnut mantles, and of course, a bust of the Bard himself above the grand fireplace in the front foyer. But most of all, you'll enjoy our comfortable sleeping rooms, each one beautifully appointed with fabulous art and antiques and luxurious linens. ... more   less
