We stayed here for 1 night while waiting to embark on a cruise ship from Cape Liberty. We chose this hotel because of the close proximity to the cruise ship terminal and the pool. We booked a “standard room” through Algotels (formerly Trivago), which turned out to be 2 double beds. Room was standard, no complaints. Pros: - This hotel has great staff who are kind and genuinely want to help you. Twice, staff went out of their way to care for my husband and I. I unfortunately didn’t catch names, but had great service at the Starbucks and front desk. - This hotel is beautiful. We enjoyed sitting in the lobby on the couches. Having communal spaces to enjoy was a huge bonus. - The complimentary shuttle to/from the airport, of course.
Cons: - The location… this hotel isn’t near ANYTHING. No restaurants (more on that later), no shops, no convenience stores, nothing. We spent $60USD round trip via Uber on a single trip to Walmart. We would’ve really benefited from some type of (complimentary) shuttle service to/from nearby shops. We would be happy to pay more for the room if it included more complimentary shuttles. - The hotel restaurant was overpriced and not worth visiting. Breakfast was $24USD for a sad buffet. We ended up visiting the Holiday Inn buffet next door which was $19USD. It was nothing to write home about (breakfast buffets rarely are), but cheaper. As mentioned, there are no other food options nearby so you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place. - Frontage road is so beat up. There’s also no sidewalk… to be fair, there’s nowhere to go. - There were shuttles that were available for a fee. For example, we were quoted $30USD EACH for a shuttle to the cruise ship terminal. Uber fare is half the price.
And as for the pool, we didn’t even end up going to it. I suppose that’s a lesson for us.
TL;DR we won’t be staying here again because of the poor location, although this hotel did have some selling points otherwise. The hotel should up their game of complimentary shuttles to make up for the poor location.

My daughter is participating in a seminar taking place in the hotel. It's scheduled from 9am -9pm Friday -Sunday and again on Tuesday 7pm. So we are here for 6 nights.
The breakfast buffet is $25 with no discounts for a 6 night stay. So that would be $375 for breakfast on this trip alone for the 3 of us. There are no nearby restaurants or markets, so you don't really have any other options.
My husband is vegan so the breakfast buffet would not even be an option. They have a coffee counter open until 2pm and then the restaurant open from 11am-10pm. There's nothing fresh on the menu, i.e. there's no salads and it's very limited. They do have Avocado Toast, so there is one Vegan Option if you need it.
Items like bottle water are $4.83 out of their vending fridge in the lobby. Tate's cookies are $8. They have heat and go options like Ramen in the vending fridge as well. I'm not sure how much those are but everything seems pretty overpriced. The vending fridge also didn't work half the time.
The coffee counter and lobby bar only had 1 person manning it at each time so the line for coffee in the morning is long and it takes time to order in the lobby bar.
I wound up Ubering to WholeFoods and grabbed some items to hold in the mini fridge in the room.
There is a microwave in the lobby but not in the room. The ice machine on our floor didn't work. The toilet ran all night. It took them two tries to fix it but they were prompt to send maintenance each time.
For us, the convenience of staying in the hotel where the seminar is being held surpassed any other concern. Beds are small but comfy. But the fact that the hotel is not conveniently located to anything but the airport and the hotel has poor food options and food service, made this an uneasy stay.

Poor communication for the airport shuttle from Newark, but the hotel itself was very clean with a sweeping, skyscraper-like lobby in an architectural marvel. The staff was friendly enough, they also were offering cookies on arrival to guests. But the transit communication between guests and the hotel airport shuttle service was horrible, rife with bad directions. The interior of the hotel was phenomenal and looked like a neomodern palace. The room itself was spacious and luxurious even for not being a suite. However, the TV did not function, and the in-room WiFi was very slow, and the room phone was ancient. The city “View” was a lie. I had a View of the rail yard.Â
Overall score: 6.1/10.0

My experience with this hotel was HORRIBLE! The hotel did not honor my reservation booked through Hotwire to stay in a room with a Newark Skyline View, however they charged me the higher rate and put me in a standard room that overlooked the restaurant bar. The balcony room door had a lock that prevented the balcony door from opening. The room was small, dark and dirty with furniture that was old and worn. The hotel room DID NOT look like the pictures online, completely misleading! It is NOT a 4 star hotel. The bathroom floor tile was cracked, it was not clean, there was someone else's hair on the sink, the floor and the tub. There was blue tape wrapped around the shower head to prevent water leakage. The bathroom sink had black marks worn into sink that could not be wiped off. The lobby furniture was stained and worn. I will NEVER stay at another DoubleTree again!

I was booked into this hotel by my employer and I was expecting the usual Double Tree quality but I’m afraid the standards fell well short of the brand USP.
My first breakfast visit was chaos despite paying for bed and breakfast. On arrival at the breakfast area I was quoted $24 for breakfast, I said I had booked breakfast but was then asked for a voucher. Went to reception, given a voucher for £20 ??? Went back to breakfast area to be told it’s the wrong voucher. Decided to cancel breakfast and eat out. Taxi booked to the local rail station, walking is impossible to anywhere. As the driver arrived I was told they had sorted it but I had lost my appetite. On return from sightseeing I was given vouchers I should have had on check in. Following days included a decent breakfast but I must say I’ve had better at Travelodge. On one day customers were struggling to find clean tables to eat at, dirty plates etc remained at tables during my whole sitting.
During my first 3 nights I had no visit from housekeeping to empty bins, replace the paper cups and tea bags you are given, or to give a general clean up. I made my bed everyday (ex military) and would not say I was untidy but they would change towels and then just walk out. Can we not have china cups ????
The hotel foyer is quite nice and very spacious but the large leather (faux?) seats are split and have seen better days
I had the overall impression that the staff were not happy in their work and for some their customer service needs working on. I’m not sure there is a good customer first culture, and would also question the safety culture judging by the taped up joints on the vacuum lead used in the foyer on check out.
The shuttle bus is a good benefit if you want to get the train into New York from the airport, otherwise it’s $30 each way to Newark Penn Station. No chance of finding anywhere else to eat close to the hotel and the choices are limited and expensive.
Disappointed with this Double Tree experience

The hotel would likely be fine if you are looking for a place to sleep and nothing else.
Pros: The rooms were nice enough, comfortable, and the HVAC worked well without drying out the air in the room (which is always a concern in hotels). Some things showed wear and tear as mentioned in other reviews, but nothing that bothered me. I did get a free upgrade to the 12th floor as a diamond member, so that was a plus as well. Finally, the lobby has great places to sit and relax when waiting for flights.
Cons: As mentioned in other reviews, the food is extremely disappointing. I ate 4 meals in the hotel because of food credits I needed to use and almost everything was dry and underwhelming. The mashed potatoes were clearly microwaved (bland and still cold in the middle), the bread on hamburgers tasted stale, and the cheesecake was the consistency of pudding. Moreover, the grab and go section couldn't be charged to the room which makes it impossible to use food credits on anything except the breakfast or bar area that doubles as a restaurant. The terrible food is compounded by the fact that the location of the hotel means that there are no other options for dining in the area that are walkable. The other thing to be aware of as well is that the website is clearly out of date which leads to false advertising. As shown in the picture below, the website still suggests that there is a complimentary breakfast and lounge for diamond members. Neither are true. They replaced the 12th floor lounge with more guest rooms and eliminated the complimentary breakfast. Instead you will pay $25 for a breakfast that is dramatically worse than the free one at a Hampton Inn. The staff also don't seem to want to acknowledge the changes because when I directly asked them about these changes in a polite way the staff either ignored the questions or mumbled "no" and quickly turned away. Aside from one bartender, most of the staff seemed extremely uninterested and disenfranchised. I definitely don't blame them though. Given everything I saw my best guess is that the hotel was amazing in the past but went through changes that shifted the focus from people to profits (maybe new management)?
Conclusion: The hotel is fine if you want a place to spend the night on a layover and don't need food. However, I will likely choose the local Hampton Inn over this place in the future, so just go with the expectation that this is a low-quality Hampton Inn with a nicer lobby.

I haven’t written a review in a long time & I try not to be a whiner but this was frustrating enough that here I am at 2:25am, wishing I had chosen any place but here, having been woken up by two men speaking loudly in the room next to us and music and loud voices in the lobby area below. Called the reception to ask if there was music playing from there and they asked me if they should turn it down a bit!? 20 minutes later had to call again only to hear that they didn’t know how to turn it down in the bar area,. our bedroom has a closed balcony that directly faces into the bar, which is closed for the night! Why loud music is playing at all at this time of night is beyond me. After repeated requests it’s a little better but still detectable coming up into our room from that lower level.
Secondly The in-house restaurant was so over priced and had no children’s options at all; No fridge, microwave or guest directory in the room so despite having come with food from home we can’t heat it up or even have a list of resources to choose a place to order from. So having no other options for two weary kiddos to get a hot meal, I paid 22$ for a burnt-topped, soggy crusted cheese pizza for my 7yr old, & ordered a $27 chicken Caesar salad for my 13yo, specifying that he had to be strictly gluten free- only to have It come covered in croutons; wait staff seemed overworked so we just handled it ourselves. Small generic bottles of water were 5$. No place to fill your own water bottles in the hotel.
The hallway on our wing smells rank and moldy. The room is okay but again, no microwave or mini fridge which is rather basic these days; & rather than having a window to the outside, it has an inaccessible balcony overlooking into the bar and lobby area. It feels creepy and unnatural and if I knew the issue we’d have with the music & noise coming from there I’d have asked to switch to a room looking to the outdoors.
We paid approx 200$ to stay near the airport for a flight tomorrow & 100$ for an adult and two kids to have a very unsatisfying meal. I could cry at the $ spent and the very disappointing experience. We did the best we could but it has all added up to a very frustrating overnight.
I will say the check in staff was kind enough and they did provide warm cookies upon arrival, including allergy friendly ones which was very appreciated. Also to be fair, at the second request to take care of the music it is a bit better, but it’s not the silence you’d hope for at now 3:30am.

Alright so this is a large hotel, conveniently located nearby the Newark airport but they really need to consider some minor details that would help this hotel. First, the rooms are showing wear and do need some updating, especially the bathrooms where you can tell the tile has some water/mold issues and have been patched and re-sealed multiple times. I would also say the room and hotel were not really clean, just barely clean. This hotel is not doing the clean stickers on the doors to show the room was cleaned and I could not find a single hand sanitizer anywhere near desk, elevators, etc since checking in. The room has no fridge and no information at all about the hotel such as wifi info, hotel amenities, shuttle service.....nothing. I have never been to a hotel that did not have a mini fridge. Next, the hotel restaurant had attentive staff and good food, however not clean (we sat down to a set table with food still on it and all over the seat) and they have no kids menu. This is bizarre to me. You run a hotel that families fly into and don't have any options for kids? I'm not spending $22 for 4 year old to eat 3 bites of a sandwich. In all fairness the night manager made it work and charged us $10 for just a plain turkey cheese sandwich but stull.....families stay in hotels, have some options. Finally, we get to the pool....it closes at 8pm. I have never been to a hotel where the pool is not open until at least 9 or 10. Again families and people want to enjoy the pool which is indoors and should not close at 8pm. We haven't completed our stay yet but are not impressed by our first stay at this Hilton property.

We coordinated a corporate meeting for 10 team members with DoubleTree. The event room was spacious for 10 folks with U shaped set up, nice presentation of coffee and tea station, and very helpful staff as we scrambled on day one to troubleshoot (our fault, not the hotel). Bring extension cords for laptop users or opt for the visual/audio service (we didn't but the vendor was also very responsive and provided multiple setup options). The staff was consistent in checking in and attending to our needs over three days; they in advance gathered our lunch order and were incredibly timely in lunch service, helping us stick to schedule. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The breakfast buffet was consistent and had a good variety of options. The restaurant food was decent, generally large portions, and with vegetarian options but no alternative protein. We all loved the atrium with workspaces, restaurant, bar and Starbucks - this provided an excellent space for smaller work gatherings and waiting before/after checking in/out. The location is incredibly convenient, with free and fast shuttle to EWR and reasonable taxi/train rides into Jersey City and NYC. You cannot walk anywhere from the hotel. We did not hear any plane or freeway noise. The hotel offered an attractive package deal for the event. We would definitely consider hosting another event there.
