Ocean Grove's Sampler Inn was a much loved Jersey Shore institution that was torn down several years ago. After a succession of owners, the hotel/cafeteria fell into such a state of disrepair that it became an eyesore and hazard.
In its heydey, the Sampler Inn's cafeteria was a "must visit" for many visitors to the shore. I remember going through the cafeteria line & choosing each item of my meal. There was a charge for everything, right down to a pat of butter. The food was always tasty, which accounted for the very long line to get in each evening. As a child I was amazed by the cashier's ability to tally our family's tab in just seconds, without the need for a price list. The large dining room featured dozens of the samplers that gave the inn its name.
It's a shame that the inn is no longer there for future generations, but I'm sure many older shore visitors have fond memories of the food and fun atmosphere of its dining room.
