The Melrose was a great option for my wife and I while we were in the area for a wedding in Asbury Park. Rates are lower than some of the hotels and the Melrose was more of an experience staying in an 1800s Victorian home. Loved the keyless entry and contactless check in.

The rooms in the Melrose – at least ours – are relatively small, but there are plenty of common areas inside and multiple large porches outside where you can spread out. We stayed in room 3A which had a nice view, a good-sized bathroom and was right next to a large common area with a big TV. First floor has an area for making coffee/tea and refilling water bottles.

We parked our car right out front and never moved it the entire weekend because we could walk everywhere from this great location. 10 minute walk to Asbury Park. 5 minute walk to the ocean. Plenty of food and drink options nearby.

Only drawback is that if the Stone Pony is using the outdoor stage, that sound carries pretty far and was a little loud. The night the Stone Pony did not have a show it was super quiet and peaceful.

One recommendation. It’s a Victorian home built when people were smaller, so 1) watch your head and 2) pack multiple smaller bags instead of one big one for easier maneuvering. Also know that there are lots of steps, so factor that in your decision. We loved it.

We stayed 2 nights on Memorial Day weekend in room 1c which was on the first floor with a King size bed, sitting area, and stall shower in the large bathroom. There was a mini refrigerator with a freezer in the room as well. It was a spacious room and close to the front porch which had a nice view of Asbury Park. It's two short blocks to the entrance of the beach (arrange for tags with Melrose beforehand or you will need to download an app to pay to get onto the beach). A microwave and Keurig were in the lobby. My only wish was that there was a floor lamp near the bed and/or couch for cozy lighting/reading at night. As mentioned in other reviews, the front stairs into the house are very steep and narrow. The walls are a bit thin and all sorts of noises were heard LOL, but we would stay again!

The location is ideal. We visited at the end of August, while the area in general is crowded, the street that Melrose sits on has adequate parking spots. We also appreciate that it is the quieter end of town, being so close to the canal. (In spite of being in a quiet end of town, one night, sadly, we heard a very loud concert playing at Asbury Park until 10:00 p.m.) We enjoyed walking just about everywhere. It was lovely to walk to the restaurant district of Asbury Park, just across the bridge. It was also so convenient to walk to the beach.

The room was clean (actually spotless) and bright. The furnishings were lovely. The decor was simple and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The shower had plenty of pressure and hot water. It was nice to have a fridge in the room, and sitting area outside.

The price was right. Check in was smooth, with our personal number on the keypad. My only regret was reading that they were a "B & B". There was no breakfast served. I suppose that this is due to Covid times. Given all of the gifts Melrose has to offer, I will surely be back!

I booked this property and canceled one month before my check in date. Their policy is cancelations prior to 14 days before arrival will receive a full refund. They charged my credit card the full amount. I did not see this charge until after my dispute period with the credit card company had passed. This is a horrible place to deal with. It took me forever to get in touch with them as no one answers. I suggest you stay away.

I booked a room here and canceled the same day because it was not the apartment shown online. I had email correspondence and they assured me that I would be refunded and the reservation was canceled. I get my credit card statement and I was never refunded. I have emailed and no response.!! Even though I got a cancellation email from vrbo, when I look now my reservation is still there. Unbelievable that I have to file a dispute to get my money back!!!

The Melrose has changed hands and is no longer a B&B. There are no common sitting areas, at least not that we were told about. It's contactless check in, not a host. The check out is 11:00 and there are no exceptions. The walls are thin and the floors squeak terribly. So if you're a light sleeper or like to sleep in this would not be your place. There was no breakfast and I didn't see any place to have had breakfast. The room was very clean and comfortable. The price was reasonable until the tax, service fee, and cleaning fee were added.

It was a good location. No breakfast at least in Dec2024 when we
went. Room2B small with no chairs or table. Good heat, good shower, working small frig. No view. No way to change room when we saw how small. Password entrance code not offered until you complete contract. I'd through breing a B&B there'd be some one thereto talk to regarding the business. Had to make emergency call to California from the porch.

Very rude and confrontational staff here. Will never go back. Everything is fully automated and when a "person" does deem to respond, it is done so in a very disturbing manner. Staying in OG used to be a happy experience but not anymore. We will go to a place where the owners are happy to provide a friendly demeanor.

I knew from the moment I walked in to this B & B it was not the cleanest, and smelled of OLD... musty, mildewy. When I was shown my room I got depressed from the size, decor, and run down look. I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt. I unpacked my things...noticing the filth in every area. The refrigerator had things in it that I can't even describe, so I cleaned it. The counter that separated the bed from the other area, had crumbs and dirt on it. The pictures of the room showed a little table with 2 chairs, which wasn't there. When I asked Randy about it his response was "oh well, we took it out". There was an unbelievable amount of dust and dirt in the vents of the window AC, that I was disgusted. When I first met Randy he mentioned, many times, how he was the cook & cleaner. I should have known then. Every place I looked there was more filth. The room was so depressing I had to go out and walk. I didn't want to go back. I, however, did. The pillows were so flat it was like having no pillow at all. The breakfast was edible, however, the coffee was like dirty water. Undrinkable. When I mentioned to Randy I was not happy, he suggested I find another place. Well, most everything was full, however, I knew I couldn't bear another moment there. I proceeded to start making phone calls, to find another place. After about an hour and almost everyone, but one place, telling me they were full, Randy called me with 2 possible places that supposedly had rooms. I had called them both, and they were full. Randy didn't care, and told me he wanted me out!! He wasn't comfortable having me there...just adding insult to injury. I did find a wonderful place. The room was outstandingly clean and very pleasant decor. When I explained the situation to the owner, and asked if he could meet the price I was paying for The Melrose, he did. He is such a nice, pleasant, happy, host. What a difference. So, I spent 2 days of my vacation trying to fix what The Melrose lacked. Not a pleasant experience. Randy did not charge me for my one night stay, as he shouldn't have. I am a Tour Director, so travel for a living, as well as pleasure. I have stayed in 1000's of hotels (from 2 star to 5 star) and many B & B's, and The Melrose, by far, was one of the worst. BEWARE. And, Randy...no need to respond to this review, as anything you will defend, as you did with your other negative reviews, will not make up for my lost days, nor the filth. Hire a cleaning woman, and do some much needed renovations.

Checked in 8p, Pride wknd. Rug had mot been vacuumed. Bathroom had hair and mini frig was filthy with food/dirt. Linens were old and worn. Time for owners to buy fresh linens. Bed veru uncomfortable, hard as a rock. We travel regularly and stay B&B 98% of the time, incl Grove/ Asbury and always neat and clean. This was worst ever. We would have loved to have checked out but knew area was booked. We showed owner room in a.m, he apolgized and offered to deep clean that day. We were checking out day 2 so a mute offer. Nice owners but clear they dont inspect housekeeping. A little goes a long way.....We wont be back.

Response from Randy B, Owner at The Melrose
Responded 9 Jun 2014
I am sorry you were unhappy. I wish you had brought it to my attention when you arrived. Though I was not in the building, you did have my pone number to get in touch with me immediately if there was an issue. When you brought it to my attention after the first night I offered to upgrade you to another room. You declined. I then offered to come in and clean the room personally while you were out and you said it was not necessary as your "stuff" was all over the room and you were only there to sleep. I know that you were not happy with our breakfast choices and in fact mentioned to my partner when he offered you water that you brought your own. Please accept our apologies but I am uncertain as to what else I could have done to correct the situation.

I only saw my room, which had the one bed I needed, but I'm certain there are two-bed options. There are lots of rooms.
