Detailed Reviews
Place could be a movie set. Comfortable rooms. Great location. Rocking chairs on the front porch. Lake across the street. It's a very visually pleasing place.
On the down side, parking is a bit of challenge. There are no elevators so you have to climb stairs. Kind of expected a stepped up breakfast but nothing exceptional was included. Well the coffee was better then average.
It is in a great location, the lake is peaceful the ocean a few blocks one way, center of town a few blocks the other.
Would certainly visit again.

David, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with a review. We do have parking in the back of the hotel when the front spaces are taken. Yes, unfortunately we do not have an elevator due to the age of the building. Our breakfast is a continental breakfast. We do not have access to a full kitchen to provide a bigger breakfast. We do hope that you have the opportunity to visit us again.

My husband and I spent a few days at HW. We visited Spring Lake before and dined at the Whispers (the restaurant inside the hotel) but never stayed there. Well, we finally did and it was really nice. Our room was ready early and we received a text letting us know that we could check in early. That was great!! Yes, it’s an old, historic building. But it’s clean and cozy and inviting. It has everything necessary for a comfortable stay. Rooms are clean and spacious. If you plan on spending time at the pool, I strongly recommend Rooms 3 & 4, as they have direct access to the pool. Room 3 was recently remodeled. The new king size bed is very comfortable. Speaking of pool, it warm and clean. They provide towels and there are plenty of chairs. My only complaint about pool is that it doesn’t opens until 10 am. Wish it was earlier. Breakfast could’ve been better. It’s very basic. Considering that there is restaurant on site, they could do hot breakfast. Great location. 10 min walk to the beach. HW provides beach badges which is a very nice touch (bring your own chairs and towels). There was plenty of parking right by the beach, so we actually drove there to avoid carrying beach chairs. I was concerned about parking at the hotel but we never had any problems. Overall, great experience.

This is a lovely hotel in a historic building just 1 1/2 blocks from the ocean and famous boardwalk. Check-in was quick and easy before we headed to our 2nd floor balcony room. I splurged for my husband’s birthday, taking him back to the Jersey Shore where he spent his childhood summers . Each hotel room is actually individually- owned condo so each suite is decorated differently. Ours had a light beachy decor with comfortable sofa and chair, plenty of cabinet and shelf space, and double bed. Small but very workable bathroom with hood lighting . The balcony looking out over the man-made (?) pond and ocean beyond was the highlight. Great for sunrise and sunset viewing. Whispers, a high end restaurant, is located in the rear of the hotel but is a separate entity. Very much a special occasion place but worth it for celebrations.

Over the past ten years my wife and daughter have stayed at the Hewitt Wellington at least a dozen times. Then this past year new management took over. Virtual management, you might say, since they weren't there. We called the number posted in the lobby, waited 90 minutes and when they did show up it only made us sorry we had bothered. To start with, our rooms weren't ready when promised. Under the guise of Covid precautions, no services are provided: no pool, no dining, no housekeeping. Breakfast vouchers to be used at a local restaurant were promised instead but when we asked for ours an argument from the desk clerk resulted. Opening the door to our room at last, the doorknob came off in our hands. Showing it to the manager resulted in a tirade on his part. Drug-addled or not, neither he nor the desk clerk seemed aware of what is required when it comes to running an inn. Rather than stay even one night, we went four blocks west to the Ocean House where we had a wonderful three days.

Henry, Thank you for the review and your view on the events that occurred. We are working with a limited staff and respond to all calls as soon as possible. Unfortunately when you called, the front desk staff member was with another guests and responded as soon as she was available. There is always a staff member onsite at the hotel and willing to assist with questions or concerns. The breakfast vouchers (which were provided to you) were based on the special promotion we were running on our website. The promotion clearly stated 2 vouchers per room. While we are now aware you had a third person in your party, the promotion clearly stated 2. Regarding the door knob. This was a maintenance issue that was almost immediately addressed. The Hewitt Wellington is an older building and we put a lot of time and effort into maintaining it. Unfortunately things do happen during a guests stay and we attempt to address and resolve any issues as soon as possible. Regarding the hotel amenities- We have taken great precautions to ensure that we provide a safe environment for our guests this year. Our website has been updated continuously to provide the most up-to-date information available along with the cleaning/sanitization procedures we are doing throughout the hotel. We have implemented the no contact check in procedure to help reduce the person to person interaction. We do hope that we are able to get back to somewhat normal operations as it is our nature to want to interact with our guests as we are in the hospitality business. We do understand that part of the experience of staying at the Hewitt Wellington is the access to the pool. In the interests of health and safety and due to the restrictions put in place by the State of NJ we had to make the hard decision to keep the pool closed for the season. What you have failed to note in your review is how you were yelling and belittling the front desk agent. While we understand you may have been having a bad bad or were frustrated due to having to wait for someone to respond to you, we do not tolerate anyone treating our staff as you did. This is why you were asked to check out of the hotel and were fully refunded your stay. We are however happy that you were able enjoy your time in Spring Lake.

Milouw, Thank you for the review. Yes our hotel is old it was built in 1876 and still does feature the narrow staircases and unfortunately we do not have an elevator. We are glad that you did enjoy the location, WIFI, and pool. We do hope that you are able to visit us again if you are every back in the area.

We had a short stay here while attending a wedding at The Mill. The location is great, a short and pleasant walk to the downtown area and a short 2 blocks to the ocean. We found plenty of parking available in front of the hotel. The lobby and common areas of the hotel are very nice and it was very relaxing sitting on the front porch. Continental breakfast of muffins and such is provided but I highly recommend going downtown to the Honey Berry Cafe for a much more substantial breakfast. We had a suite (room 22) which was spacious and nicely decorated. However, improvements need to be made with cleaning. There were dust balls and dirt pretty much everywhere, especially the bathroom. We were afraid to turn on the ceiling fan because it doesn't look like they have been cleaned in a long time. We could look past that, but what was very disappointing were the towels. The towels they provide at best can be considered hand towels (see attached pic). Plus they are stained. For the price they charge they should at least be providing a full sized bath towel. And for a place that likes to think of themselves as a luxury hotel they should be providing something better than what you might clean your car with.

The pictures & descriptions on their website were gorgeous! When we arrived it was a no contact check in. We came during the COVD pandemic, so we expected attention at least to a level of cleaning and hand sanitizer. We immediately noticed at the front desk a box of big spay bottles cluttering the hall and unmarked. There were dead plants on the entryway tables. We went up to the 3rd floor to our room, on each level there were bags of dirty linen lining the hallways. There were 2 keys for the locks and neither worked and the doorknob was falling out of the door. When we voiced our concerns to the person at the front desk about the lock and the dirty linen, his response was “ it’s always like this, you don’t have to stay” We agreed and asked for a full refund. The one rating is we did get the refund,

Ultimate in luxury & comfort? No. Recently remodeled? When was recent. Plush bedding ensemble? This should be retired from use - very shabby (see photo). Luxurious space? No. Incredible comfort and luxury? No. The room needs a major refresh and website description needs a truthful overhaul. Bed was supposed to be a queen size but seemed like full size and had a big sag in the middle. Bathroom is 2.5 steps down (see photo) which makes for an awkward transition - especially if you awaken with a need for the toilet at night. Passed on the free breakfast which was grocery store bagels & pastries, yogurt and fruit (the green grapes were long past prime and should have been tossed). There are better choices at this price point. There is potential here - new furnishings and linens, a deep cleaning throughout (dust on many surfaces, bathroom grout needed attention). There is offstreet parking in the back and dedicated spots in the front from which you don’t need to move the car overnight. Staff were friendly.

We're sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your stay here. All of our rooms are individually owned condos. With that, the owners have free reign to decorate their rooms as they see fit and are responsible for all the furniture and decor and style of the room. We will look into the room you stayed in and pass along the critique to that owner. The building itself is older and has alot of history and with that comes unique layouts of rooms, so no two rooms are exactly alike in terms of layout. As for breakfast, we do not have a full kitchen to prepare food fresh on the premises, however, we acknowledge that you were displeased with the breakfast and will discuss with management how to better improve our selection. Should you choose to stay with us again, please reach out to us directly and we will make sure you are placed into a room that suits your needs and exceeds expectations. Try us again in our off-season as our rates are substantially lower then peak season.

We loved our room, although it does need updating. We loved it because it had a private porch near the pool, nothing fancy but we like privacy. Pool temperature was perfect. Like other reviewers said things could be better taken care of. The continental breakfast was very nice. Good coffee, Lots of choices. The view from the front porch is lovely. Ice machine was broken. Bags of ice provided in a cooler. Could've been handled in a more sanitary way. I got the impression the owners are not paying attention, and that is a shame. We'll go back again but hope some issues have been taken care of. I looked ahead to see what the rate changed to later in the summer. In August it is $100.00 more than we paid, which is understandable, but we would never pay that much for the room we had.

Thank you for the review. Unfortunately the ice machine was broken and we looked at different ways to ensure our guests had access to ice during their stay. We do not have freezers available to us to store bags of ice as we would prefer to have done. We do hope that you have the opportunity to visit us again in the future.

Hewitt Wellington is an older hotel located steps away from Spring Lake in the town of Spring Lake. It’s also convenient enough from which to walk to the beach but it is not on the beach.
We had a double room and it was of a good size, with refrigerator but no desk, only an armchair. They do not have an elevator so that’s something to consider for those who need it.
The facilities are clean but probably need to be renovated soon as wears and tears are starting to show (e.g. wallpaper is starting to lift from corners, rusty drain rings, old bath fixtures). The bed was moderately soft and creaked a lot.
They provide a self serve breakfast consisting mostly of cold items, pre-packaged pastries, and it was not too appetizing.
The surrounding area has many beautiful houses and it was lovely to walk around and admire the homes. I think Spring Lake has more year round residents than other shore towns which lends a different feel to the place.

Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately, we do not have a kitchen to prepare a full breakfast. Whisper (the restaurant) located within the hotel is a separate entity/ ownership and are only open for dinner.
We provide a continental breakfast which includes, juice, milk, coffee, assorted teas, hard boiled eggs, bagels, English muffins, cereals, oatmeal, a fresh fruit, and assorted pastries.
We have recently added items such as French Toast, sausage links, ham, and assorted cheeses on a rotating basis.
We do not have an elevator nor any ramps into the building. We do have five first-floor rooms, if that helps.
Thank you! I did get to speak to her.
I didn't see anyone with pets...you would have to call or check their website
Actually the train runs right to Spring Lake and the station is only about 5-6 blocks from the hotel!!
