Lovely cafe in pretty village on garden route. Nice place for a break. Great coffee and lovely staff. Also wifi. I cannot comment on the b&b as it was just a short stop, but the cakes looked fab- as did the kitchen.

Spent only one night, so unfortunately could not experience the full benefit of this quaint B n B. Also, the cloudy weather also imparted a bit of a grey sheen to the entire area. Nice, friendly hosts and staff, enjoyable breakfast - all the basics were in place. Only gripe was that both the biscuits and the milk were past...

This is a very pleasant town with colonial buildings and a pleasant environment. Africa Shades is on the edge of town but still close enough to walk safely to shops and restaurants. Classy place with a nice décor and plenty of trees for natural shade. Room was big and we had our won patio! Nice! Breakfast was nicely served and...

We had a nice , comfortable stay at African Shades in Swellendam. Just in the old part of Swellendam. We slept very well and enjoyed an extensive English style cookes breakfast. The waitress was enthousiastic.

What a pleasure to find this gem in Swellendam! After our booked guest house 'forgot' about our booking we found this B&B. Absolutely clean, nothing too much: from leaving fresh milk in your room to prepare a special lunch AND deliver it whilst hot... What more do one need?! What a pleasure that nothing was 'too much' to ask for...

African Shades came to our rescue with last minute booking as previous guest house 'dropped us'. There was a warm welcome from the staff. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. The service is excellent and even though we do not see anyone due to our hours, we don't want for anything.

I had a lovely tea with my dad and his wife. The cheesecake was rich but really delicious. The cappuccino was excellent and the scones, although rather on the big side were also lovely. The view is great and the service excellent.

A little gem of a place, a really welcoming hostess who laid on the most amazing dinner for us, a great treat for our friends to savour some great traditional south African food. Room was very comfortable. A place we will certainly recommend to friends.

Really a great place, friendly staff, excellent room and a fantastic breakfast. This was my 2nd visit and hopefully not my last. For a single traveller this was outstanding. I wish the owners and the staff all the very best for the future, please keep up the good work

“Could not fault a thing at this really nice place. Everything was perfect. The rooms were comfortable and clean, and there was not a thing out of place at the whole establishment. The location was ideal too. Breakfast was enjoyed at the owners restaurant across the road and this was really nice, we wanted for nothing during our three night stay.”
