My husband and I along with our two teenagers spent an incredible 5 days at Mala Mala. We came with a list of animals we each wanted to see from rhino and cheetah to lions and leopards. We had very full days and we saw every animal on our list and many, many more. It was not just the animals,... More

My husband and I along with our 12 & 13 year old grandsons spent three nights at this safari lodge in a 2-room suite, with 2 bathrooms, that served our needs exactly. The view of the river from the rooms allowed us to watch elephants and other animals that came down to the river. Our experienced ranger ensured that our... More

We spent 3 nights at MalaMala Main Camp. The experience was extraordinary in all regards. Their "business model" is unique and outstanding. Your Ranger is your personal concierge and guide for the entire visit. He has breakfast, lunch and dinner with you and your group. He even goes as far as making the wake-up call in the morning. This approach... More

We stayed at Mala Mala for 3 nights as part of a 10 night safari trip. The rooms are amazing with an excellent view of the river bank and animal activity. We had a communal room in between our room and the room of others in our party. The rooms had multiple bathrooms, allowing both of us to have our... More

Our 16 member family flew out of J’Burg in an 18-seater plane. I wondered if I’d see animals from the airplane and sure enough not only did I see animals but we had to abort landing so the runway could be cleared. Our guides, Murray, Neil, and Benz, greeted us at the airport. I think we were all so wide-eyed... More

Perfect location overlooking the Sands River with game wandering along both banks. Perfect room (I can't see why some of the other reviews were complaining). Perfect guide, very competent, knowledgeable. Superb game viewing. Good food.

The first camp of our 4 camp safari was Mala Mala. From there we went to Vic. Falls in Zambia, Chobe and the Delta in Botswana. Our priority was animal viewing and here it was unbelievable! At times it seemed impossible that we were seeing the amazing number and variety of animals in their natural habitat. We saw everything you... More

Four couples traveling together enjoyed 3 nights at the Main Camp in May. The rooms were incredibly comfortable with 2 full baths/closets in each. The food was very well done and a meal in the Boma complete with singing by the staff was a highlight of our trip. We split up during game drives and Neil was our guide every... More

I had my First ever African Safari with MalaMala Main Camp. It was recommended by A&K Tour Operator. The location, services, Safari Experience, accommodation, Suites is just mind-blowing. MalaMala has the biggest private gaming area in the entire Kruger Region. I stayed in Suite no. 14 which was marvelous. Extremely spacious, balcony overlooking the river, Impalas, Wildebeest, Wild Buffaloes, Bushbucks... More

Mala Mala was one of four camps I stayed at during May, 2015. The issue is that the camp offers inconsistent opportunites. The size of the reserve and the game offerings are among the best. The Land Rovers are limited to seating six in three rows and the rangers are top notch. The problem is that the physical facility is... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
MalaMala Game Reserve is the Safari Industry's blueprint to the luxury photographic safari. In existence since 1927, this massive thriving tract of land produces the most exciting wildlife experience this side of the equator. MalaMala Game Reserve is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. Comprising 13 300 ha (33 000 acres), MalaMala shares a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, and lies strategically sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve. For over four decades, Michael Rattray has remained focused on his objective to preserve and protect the land over which he is custodian. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century. This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made MalaMala their destination of choice to capture footage of wildlife viewing that would rival any Hollywood production for thrilling and breathtaking animal encounters. MalaMala's Camps (MalaMala Main Camp, Sable Camp and Rattray's on MalaMala) are the embodiment of an authentic safari experience pioneered at a time when the safari was simple - unassuming camps, vast sweeping plains, the African sky and the bush in all its splendour. Wellness was the feeling after a long day in the wild. Cigars were shared without pomp and ceremony. Guests to MalaMala will still spend hours beneath an inky sky in the traditional boma exchanging stories from the wild - a sumptuous meal, good company and relaxed faces warmed by the crackling fire, accompanied by the nocturnal symphony of sound. ... more   less
