The timeshare was inside the Chautauqua Institute. It was a very interesting small town with narrow streets and no street lights. It was begun in the 1850's. It was an interesting place to walk around and see all the landscaping. Be sure to learn of its history. Most unique time share we have ever been at.

I don't understand why they shut down everything in September. It's still warm. Lodging is so so, but there is nothing to do. It's a pretty area with great walking trails but I won't return. It's so quiet it's kind of creepy.
Thank Linda S

Great resort. Very clean unit with view of Lake Chautauqua. Atmosphere very quiet and peaceful. It is located in a gated community which is very secure. Staff very helpful and understanding and the local restaurants are excellent. The only drawback, (if it is a drawback), is you have to climb stairs from the bedrooms to the living area then to the loft. Overall a great place to visit.

We stayed at The North Shore the last week of February using our RCI timeshare exchange. Glad we read reviews before we arrived so we weren't totally disappointed when we checked into the property. The units are very outdated and in need of some maintenance. Wall paper peeling from the walls, outside and inside in need of fresh paint, very old carpeting, and the lower level smelled musty. I'm sure during peak season this is a charming location with the close proximity of the lake.

We found this rental unit through our time share exchange. North Shore at Chautauqua is several buildings with 4 units in each building on the campus of the Chautauqua Institution which is a very unique gated community of hotels, bed and breakfast homes, private rentals, dormitories, private homes that are lived in year round and many that are summer homes on the lake. The Institution offers 9 weeks of specialized learning during the summer and is very popular. We were visiting during the off season, coming here for the fall colors. No activity at the Institution except for occasional Road Scholar program and people with summer home were gone. It was wonderful for it to not be crowded! The campus is beautiful for walking, right on the lake. We were in unit A2 which had a beautiful view of the lake in the back and the pool in the front. Very likely the best view of all the North Shore units. Our unit had 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, about 1500 sq ft, 3 levels. Two bedrooms (a queen bed and 2 twins) and 2 baths are downstairs, with 2 twins in the loft upstairs. There is a steep ladder to climb to the loft. The half bath is in the middle level with kitchen, dining and living room. Kitchen had big variety of items for a rental unit. Furniture is dated but reasonably comfortable. We found the beds to be very hard. Our unit was very clean. There are 2 TVs and many channels. Much of the area shuts down in October for the winter. We enjoyed driving the Amish Trail in the next county and learned much about their culture. Be sure to get a map of the Trail to know which homes offer things to sell. Malinda's Candy Shop sells homemade candies and goat milk fudge which is delicious! Amish baked goods are sold only on Friday and Saturday. None of the Amish shops are open Sunday. We stopped at The Cozy Cottage Alpaca Farm on the Trail (non-Amish) and enjoyed petting the beautiful animals and meeting the owners. There are 2 other Amish communities nearby as well. Jamestown nearby is birth place of Lucille Ball and has a very nice museum of Lucy and Desi there. Although October is off season for the area, it is a beautiful time to be here for the fall colors, and very little traffic on the roads. I would definitely return to this rental unit again if returning to western New York.
