A spaciously set out lodge with a comfortable lounge / bar area as well as an extensive decking area with lots of shade under ebony and mahogany trees.

Fabulous views over a dry lagoon (Mfuwe Lagoon) on one side and my chalet faced a smaller water-filled lagoon complete with hippos, crocs and habited by a family of fish eagles, hammerkops, jacanas, Egyptian geese & goslings, plus a plethora of other birdlife as well as baboons, vervet monkeys, bushbuck. It was wonderful waking up to hear the fish eagles calling in the morning, as well as listening to lions roar during the night.

Elephants appeared whilst we were still in the middle of our welcome briefing… and at various other times during my stay at the camp… I didn’t get to see them walking through reception, but one bull did visit the mango tree about 20 minutes after I had gone to bed!

The lodge was the largest I stayed at and is in a good location to reach various areas of the park with different habitats. Our guide Gwen was one of the only two female guides and she was extremely knowledgeable and provided us with the opportunity for some excellent sightings. It was also nice that she sat with us for meals, so we could continue our discussions from the game drives. She is also a superb driver navigating the trails in some very challenging driving conditions. Chadwick was our spotter and provided fantastic sundowners and nibbles each evening. Lots of wild dog and elephant sightings, as well as the leopard Lucy and her two young cubs.

Lovely friendly service from the restaurant staff and bar with meals announced by the beating of a drum. There is a swimming pool which looks well maintained although I didn’t use it, but many others used it for a refreshing dip in the heat of the day. WiFi available in the restaurant area, reception and library. Laundry was included in the cost and my boots were nicely dried after one soaking in a rainstorm; downside was having to pay for drinks from the bar (this was the only lodge where this happened, but the other lodges I visited were owned by a different company).

We spent 3 nights at the Lodge and had an excellent stay. The room was very clean, comfortable and well equipped and you can sit on your balcony or by the pool when not on a game drive and watch animals come to the lagoon beside the lodge. All the staff are really welcoming, friendly and do everything they can to ensure you have a great stay and the food is varied, fresh ( all the vegetables are grown on Lodge's farm) and very tasty.
Our guide, Shadrick, was excellent - very knowledgable about all the animals, birds and the flora/fauna and the wildlife is varied and plentiful - we had lots of great sightings.

We stayed at the Mfuwe Lodge as part of our Odyssey Safari, which is less than hour drive from the airport. On the trip to the lodge, we encountered our first leopard of the trip...completing our Big 5.

After our briefing, we went on our first game drive with Sir Charles. We saw more leopards, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, and several birds. Back for dinner at the hotel and our guide ate with us. He shared much about the culture and history of the area.

During the next 2 days, we had two drives a day; all of the guides work hard...but Sir Charles is the best! In the morning, coffee & snack where offered by the small water hole. The night safari include sunset cocktails.

The room was spacious and luxury and huge with a balcony overlooking the river with many animals wandering the property including baboons, impalas, warthogs, hippos & elephants. Make sure that your doors are locked and that after dark you get a guard to escort you to your room!

We tour the local school and learned much..

Mfuwe Lodge should be recognized for their efforts to help the community.

Captain Bill

An authentic lodge in a beautiful setting. View from the bar/pool area is right across the river where one can see many different species of animals coming together at sunset. Rooms and bathrooms are very large (but lighting is a bit challenging). My room was cantilevered over a large swamp that was teeming with hippos and their grunting was funny and entertaining. I had an excellent massage in the spa with a hot tub in a most unusual setting over the swamp! Food was good and the entire staff was kind and hard-working. Best of all was the best guide of my entire trip: Brian Mondo. His breadth of knowledge, humble delivery and passion for his craft made him a stand-out. An enthusiastic staff member knocked on my cabin door to let me know that elephants were actually walking through the lobby of the hotel!! Unfortunately, I was napping but I saw plenty of elephants, giraffes, crocs and hippos on the game drives. There is a nice pool, spacious grounds and a library. Excellent choice of accommodations for this part of Zambia!

Couldn’t wait to be back to our home from home and as soon as the covid restrictions were relaxed we booked up and oh my life I’m so glad we did, the emotions I feel when I step off the plane is always amazing it’s the same when you arrive at the lodge, it’s like seeing old friends again. The staff are always so accommodating and attend to your every need. The rooms have had a make over and look really fresh and welcoming after a long trip or game drive, the food was amazing as always, bush breakfast was an added bonus along with the very unexpected Easter egg hunt for the little ones. As for the game drives we couldn’t of asked for more, our guide Peter was great and involved our ten year old in every sighting we had, his knowledge is exceptional, and the detail he went into blows you away. Just want to say a massive thanks to Andy, Ian, Amy and their team and hopefully we will be back very soon.

Started our ladies African safari adventure at Mfuwe Lodge. Wonderful accommodations, watched a baby elephant mock-charge a hippo from our room deck. Evening game drive fantastic! Food great, staff attentive, safety precautions in place to make sure interactions are low impact to animals.

Very nice lodge in beautiful South Luangwa
We stayed in Mfuwe three nights and the lodge was our first stop in South Luangwa - the other was Chindeni .
The lodge is a little big bigger than the usual lodges to which we are used but it is very well organised and managed and absolutely lovely . The thatched chalet was really fine : modern , with anything you needed and very comfortable .
The communal area overlooking a lagoon , where we often saw wildlife moving around, was also very nice.
The food absolutely good and varied .
There was a library where books about nature were available to read.
All the staff was friendly , cheerful and caring : It was like being in a big family.
Amy , the manager, was very accommodating and cooperative : we had Elaja as a guide here and as we liked staying with him we asked wether it was possible to keep him when moving from Mfuwe to Chindeni and she worked to meet our requirement , satisfying it . we really appreciated it
We always had private safari during our stay ,
The area around is full of wildlife and ,incredibly, we saw five leopards and two pride of lions which were absolutely the highlights of our trip.

We were picked up at the Mfuwe airport and about hours' drive to the national park and a check in at the entry point before heading into the hotel check in. Welcome by Nedson, Ethan Amy Eva and a brief of the hotel facilities & the protocol. We headed for afternoon tea and were welcomed by Ian & Wendy, met a short while later on our first safari drive with our guide Steve who was the designated one for the next 3 days.
A few hours on the drive we saw a few elephants, giraffes, zebras, dogs and a few birds. Back for dinner at the hotel and Steve relating a few stories. On our walk back a baby hippo crossing our Parth to the river.
We had two safaris a day, the morning one coffee & snacks by the small water hole. The same for the night safari with a couple of beers & the sunset.
The buffet lunch was fantastic and a set menu dinner throughout the stay.
The room was spacious and luxury and huge with a balcony overlooking the river with the hippos & elephants crossing. and make sure the doors are locked that the monkeys do not mess up your room and the belongings.

Security will escort you afterhours for your safety to the room after dinner.
On the day of our departure Steve drove us to a lioness kill a buffalo and we did not see the leopards. Overall, a fantastic short holiday with all the luxuries.
Once again Ian & his team thank you for the lovely stay.

Positives: staff were unfailingly attentive and gracious. John (our guide for 7 game drives) was amazing. His breadth of knowledge of flora and fauna was as good as any of the other 4 lodges we have stayed in. The format was rigid, but good: 0545 wake up, light breakfast at 0600; game drive 0630-1100; substantial “brunch” followed by free time until tea at 1500 hrs. Game drive from 1600-1900, with sundowners included. FANTASTIC game viewing, as good or better than any we have experienced.
Negatives: older facility, no WiFi, phone or radio in chalets (once escorted to your chalet after dinner you are not allowed out of your room until the 0545 wake-up.

This may seem like a silly question - how 'reasonable' are bar charges?

I live and work in London, which is pricey at the best of times and I found their prices were not too high af the lodge. I was expecting them to be, however they were fine and we didn’t end up spending as much additional money on the bar as we thought we might as drinks at lunch etc are included. Do make the best of your sundowners however!

Hi there! The end of September is a great time for game-viewing. It is dry here then, so game tends to concentrate around the waterholes. Regarding your other question, there are advantages to booking through an agent, but the decision is ultimately up to you!

i am so sorry, i didnt see this msg. you can do that for sure.. just contact the lodges and they will arrange transfers for you. they usually do it with their own vehicles.. just tell them where you want to go... each lodge can get you to the next. that is how i always do it.. on my own.
