We stayed at Chez Monique for 2 nights while visiting Abomey. The rooms were ok but without running water. The food was mediocre aside from the rabbit, which was really good. The hotel has a small menagerie with 3 crocodiles, 2 small deer, a turtle and a monkey. Our kids liked the animals but I just felt sorry for them...

The place itself has really a pleasant garden. It could be such a nice B&B if well kept. As it is, the quality is simply not acceptable. And yes, we are very well aware that we are in a very remote part of Africa. During the whole stay there was no water, they always assured us that it would work...

We stayed here for one night on our way to the north. The place is very pleasant with a very nice yard. The rooms were located in another building and we had to walk for a couple of minutes in a street to reach it. The room was very big and clean. The bathroom was also clean but we had...

Stayed here in our tent in their courtyard. The toilet and shower facilities were very basic for the price they charged. Toilets were hardly working and showers were out of a bucket - not a problem but not for the price charged. When leaving they charged us one price and our friends another for the same set up.

Spent a relaxing evening here during low season...room was very simple, with a fan and mosquito net (plus screened windows) - quite clean, though there was no soap, toilet paper, or towel in the bathroom (to be fair, I did not ask about these things, as I had brought my own). Nice meal of chicken with pate rouge (a local...

Upon arriving, it was allmost impossible fo find somebody who would sell us a room. The daughter of the house showed us the room, in a manner that looked, like we were interupting and annoying her. The room was wery rundown. No toilet seat, light that did not work, no hot water and a door to the toilet, that would...

The six rooms at the more upmarket Auberge D’Abomey were full so off I went to the ever reliable Chez Monique. Monique started as a seamstress, then ran a maquis (outdoor restaurant) and gradually built up her business to include an inn and keeps adding rooms every two years or so. (She now has 25 rooms and is building another...
