An 11 of 10! Yes, it can happen! Spent 5 wonderful days within the gracious company of Isabel y Manuel. If the adage that people make a place it is relevant here while the place is an extraordinary one. It is essentially a very large mansion albeit with separate rooms within dedicated quarters adorned with just the right mix of old Mozambican and Indian Ocean curious collected and walled pastels. It is intimate yet serves up large open laze-about spaces. Carefully and passionately recovered from entire ruins this 200 years-old wealthy, merchant-trader's home has ALL in-room amenities needed (including excellent wifi) while all other measures are very much antiquity preserved. Add perched seating on the upper deck-roof or in the garden to welcome in sundown at the waterfront with a bottle of wine or other. Next door at 'Las Reliquias' with its like-waterfront seating you also have the best restaurant in Stonetown, bar none. Amelia runs a superb ship here too. Both sit within the shortest possible walk past the customs house, to the museum, cathedral, pier, and the fort. Within mere minutes on a casual stroll you also have all of Stonetown's colonial past. Add traditional boat trips to various historically important islands, boarded within a short walk across the front garden to the beach... Transfers from the airport are arranged and reasonably priced. I loved all!…
Can’t wait to go back after returning to Europe. My friends and I spent 5 days on vacation at the Terraço das Quitandas in the Island of Mozambique. Facing the beach, just a few meters from the door, this guest house is located in a quiet and peaceful area where you can enjoy the most beautiful sunset of Africa and where the major monuments are located. Restored to its original design, Terraço das Quitandas offers its guests, or friends, which was how we all felt, the most unique experience, due not only to Isa and Manuel and the rest of the staff, who were most friendly and accommodating, but also to its character and charm. Boat trips and tours can be arranged, allowing the guests to visit other islands with amazing beaches or just enjoy the natural beauty of the island making a return to the past. The grounds surrounding Terraço das Quitandas are beautiful in the way only African country can be, and one of the greatest experiences is just lounging on a chair in the terrace enjoying the view, soaking in the most memorable sunsets or moonlight. When temperatures lower, I recommend the recreation salon, where you can enjoy some games, read or just chill out. Breakfast is exceptional. You can also have lunch and dinner served with a mixture of African, Arab, Indian and Portuguese flavours and scents. Food is homemade by nice and warm local staff. You can also enjoy amazing seafood in restaurants nearby. We will return to this african family, no doubt about it.…
Once you arrive you don't want to go back. It's magic. Excellent service and staff. Stunning interiors. Amazing breakfast. The best location. Boat trips to Ilha de Goa and Sete Paus are a must. Thank you!
The location close to the port, museum and main tourist attractions, is great. The rooms are clean and spacious and have their individual charm. The roof terrace offers very nice views on the sea, town and the night sky. Together with the entire building this place has real character. However, the main joy for me was the staff: the owner and entire team are extremely helpful and friendly and make you feel as being part of a family. For me it was a really exceptional stay!
We stayed at Terraco for 7 nights which is located in a quiet corner with a private garden leading onto the most beautiful little beach. Terraco offers you a mixture of premier comfort, central location, an intimate atmosphere with beautiful furniture pieces hand selected by the Owners from all over the world on their travels. The staff are incredibly helpful and accommodating which made us feel at home. With a mixture of exquisitely decorated rooms, they cater for solo, couples and family stays. The owners are hands on and very dedicated to their guests. This place is HIGHLY recommended. Unforgettable.
Quitandas will take you back in time when the Portuguese Caravel's first arrived at Ilha. The well maintained interiors with a truly amazing design touch will leave you dazzled. Add all this to the amazing rooms and you will wan't to comeback definitely.
We only stayed here for one night as part of our honeymoon trip to Mozambique, but we will never forget it. The building has been wonderfully restored and is among the grandest hotels we've ever stayed in. The location, in Stone Town with a sea view, was perfect. We especially want to thank Antonio who was wonderfully welcoming and helpful - thanks Antonio for making us feel at home.
Terraco is tucked away in a quiet corner of the historic heart of Ilha, with a private garden along the beach. The hotel itself reflects the ambience, a traditional old building beautifully restored and filled with elegant furnishings and decorations. There are only 4 or 5 rooms, all with sea views, and Ricardo, Mocambique-born Portuguese, is a fount of information about and enthusiasm for local history. No credit cards, so you have to reserve by bank transfer. More expensive than the modern and comfortable Feitora, but much more atmospheric and better located, closer to the Fortaleza and old heart of this fascinating outpost.. 3 very good restaurants a short walk away, and an additional bonus is the helpful staff including Fatima the grumpy maid. Memorable, distinctive and highly recommended. Obs! Avoid the long and uncomfortable chapa/autocarro ride from Nampula with an a/c transfer at the reliable Isaac.executivetransfers@gmail.com…
Terraço das Quitandas combines perfect location, family atmosphere, spacious rooms, elegant furniture and total comfort. It was a real pleasure to spend 3 days in this renovated historic building and discover the island from this privileged base camp. Dona da Casa Isabel, a local celebrity and dedicated host, knows everyone around. She and her staff are a great promoters of the island secrets. Ask for a boat tour (Quitandas has its own dhow) to one of the pristine beaches nearby....
This guest house was quite comfortable and definitely offers up a place with a lot of character. Owners have furnished the property with items they have purchased in their travels and the host/manager, Antonio, is a delightful guy. We were in the room on the top floor, #3 with a private rooftop terrace. The breeze was very nice but we needed the AC at night to sleep, as it was quite hot. Breakfasts were simple but adequate and a cooked breakfast was an option if you wanted it. We had a look at a couple of the other hotels that would be options on the island. They had pools but appeared rather sterile and were modern if that is your preference.
