If you are on a tight budget, this place will work. At 10 dollars a night for a single room, you have more money in your pocket. The room wasn't big or special, but it was adequate. They clean the room every day, sometimes I had to wait to get into my room if I came back from business too early in the day. The restaurant has decent food, and the staff spoke English pretty well- which is helpful for me having zero Swahili. There is a church very close by that can get a bit annoying with how loud they get. Overall it was a decent stay.

There is nothing good to say about this hotel. Made a mistake and paid before seeing the rooms but had to leave immediately for another hotel and never got a refund. The rooms are tiny and cramped. You need to sleep with your head next to the toilet door, one plastic chair in a room supposedly for two people, a tiny bed and one dark towel. The mosquito net looks like a mesh curtain... After complaining to the aloof receptionist and asking for a refund since he was not helpful, we couldn't get a refund and had to leave for another hotel. Yes. It is that bad. Stay at your own risk.

There are hotels, then there are brothels and then there are dungeons. Maina highway hotel fits in the latter two. As a hotel i would’t give this mess a single star. Main Highway hotel is located in the heart of Embu Town just across the (Embu - Meru) highway. A high rise 10 plus storey building is very close to the highway, you will be tempted by its proximity to cross over. But don’t fall for that bait. This mess of a hotel has the most clandestine operations and services, it should not be in the service industry. I will explain why. On the 29th December 2016, myself, my sister and my brother in law made a stop-over in the dead of the night and crossed over to Maina Highway hotel. We paid for two rooms, parked our car in the basement and stepped into the elevator. We were headed to the 6th floor but were intercepted by the security guard who demanded to see our payment receipts. We obliged of course but alas!, trouble started. We were informed we can’t check into the rooms unless we pay for an extra room because at Maina Highway hotel, they charge per head not per room. Startling and surprising. We thought at first it was a joke, but guess what? We had to leave and get to another hotel across the street. Our money was not refunded. Despite being kept waiting for the next half a day, the managers refused to pick calls and the staff present looked harassed and helpless. We warned the management we shall make it our business to warn potential clients, we have kept the promise. If you happen to spend a night or two in Embu, you have a wide range of beautiful and exemplary hotels to choose from, you know which one not to. Main Highway hotel is not a hotel, its a dungeon. You have been warned. These are the contacts for the Maina Highway Hotel clandestine management who declined to pick our calls or respond to text messages: Director (+254) 722827700 Manager (+254) 720302919 We will keep an eye on this hotel. If they change their name, we shall update this review.

Although the rooms are quite all night, the bathrooms are tiny and poorly cleaned. Take care you might fall on the slippery floor. Good thing there is a restaurant downstairs operating all day, and where you can get relatively good and affordable meals.

Room Tip: Save by taking a bed only room, and then buying a cheaper breakfast from their restaurant.

It can be a challenge to get accommodation in Embu over a weekend. I was referred here by a staff at Isaac walton. They offer parking. It is a good place to spend. there is a hot shower and beak fast is average.
