This is the place where the Vanderbilt family spent their summer vacation pretending to rough it, all the while enjoying immense luxury. The camp is a fascinating glimpse into the Gilded Age of American History. I went with the Road Scholar program. The advantage in going with their 4 day/3 night program is the educational aspect which gives the complete...

My wife and I have had a total of 5 separate stays at the Sagamore over the past 10 years and each time we don't want to leave. The place pulls you in - the history, the architecture, the location, the wind in the trees, sitting on a porch overlooking the lake, the community meals where you meet people from...

We visited Great Camp Sagamore with a RoadScholar Intergenerational week - with our 7 year old granddaughter. Very interesting site, excellent historic presentation, beautiful site, excellent camp program, welcoming staff, fair food, very good accommodations.

We found our tour of this"Great Camp" very comprehensive and helpful in learning about the influential and wealthy who vacationed here years ago. Understanding the lure of the Adirondacks to these privileged families and seeing what they considered to be "camping", as compared to that of an average camper, was rather a surprise and a bit like looking at Newport...

We stayed here as part of a Road Scholar program. This is a very historic property that is maintained with its historical past in mind. Six people sharing ONE bathroom in the main lodge was a bit of a stretch, but we managed. There is no room cleaning during your stay (even the bathroom trash can did not get emptied...

Great Camp Sagamore is one of the Adirondack Great Camps designed by William West Durant, and the inspiration of many of the great camp style buildings in the Western US. National Parks. Sagamore was owned by the Vanderbilt family, and was a self sufficient hamlet for the family right smack in the middle of Adirondack Wilderness. The original "off the...

Driving the four mile dirt road to the gated bridge entrance to Sagamore was like being transported into another world. Great Camp Sagamore was built on a peninsula on Sagamore Lake and WW Durant outdid himself with so much attention to detail in the construction of this out of the way paradise. A turn of the century gem of the...

Sagamore was a dream. Though it was Black Fly Season, it wasn't nearly as bad as some people had me believe. Even if they had been worse, I'd have still loved every minute of it. Come prepared with layers, avoid white clothes, use some bug spray and it's completely manageable. Besides, nothing can beat the friendly staff, the informative tour,...

Here's a chance to stay in a designated National Historic site. The resort is on it's own beautiful private lake, You drive 4 miles into the woods, on a well-maintained, packed dirt road to reach it. The accommodations are in beautiful old log and stone buildings. It's really unique. This camp was owned by the Vanderbilts, built in the days...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Sagamore, once the summer retreat of the Alfred Vanderbilt family, is now a National Historic Landmark that runs a variety of residential education programs from late May until late October. Neither a hotel, motel nor resort, we are instead a non-profit "living museum," one that attempts to allow as many people as possible to learn more about Adirondack history, nature and the Gilded Age amid the rustic beauty of our wilderness location. ... more   less
