A beautiful setting is only the beginning. Tucked randomly and privately in a wooded setting the cottages and the main house are throwbacks to the gilded age of the Adirondacks. I stayed in the Icehouse which is immaculate and furnished more tastefully than my own house (certainly not what I expected in a "rustic" rental). The kitchen is stocked with...

My family rented three cottages at Bearhurst. All cottages were very well cared for and stocked with everything you could need. Our four young boys had a great time running around the grounds and playing in the water. A new Queen mattress and quieter bathroom fan in Ice House would be my only recommendations. The owners were very friendly and...

My husband and I needed a place to stay while traveling from Michigan to Vermont. I never expected to find such a unique, beautiful destination. Since it was the beginning of October, the colors were at their peak, so that didn't hurt, but the whole compound was so well kept up. It was like going back in time. It was...

I wish we could spend all summer, every summer here in this beautiful retreat. It is run by a lovely family who takes great care of the property and the guests. If you need anything at all from a pinch of fresh herbs from the garden to a cup of sugar for the pie you are baking (there are full...

I discovered Bearhurst 16 years ago and have come back with kids and now grandchildren every summer since. It is the perfect combination of being "away from it all", yet with the amenities we have come to expect when on vacation. The hosts, the Armstrong family, could not be more gracious. One feels quickly like part of the family. They...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The vast 6 million acres of land known as the Adirondacks have always inspired a sense of romance in visitors. Here is nature at its finest: pristine lakes and streams, mountains every which way you look, crisp air, and glorious sights all around. The charm of this land called for a manner of architecture just as enchanting. Around the turn of the century, wealthy visitors, smitten with the region, began to build their Great Camps. These were not "camps" at all, but expansive estates situated lakeside that were at once rustic and elegant. Native stone and wood were the construction materials of choice for the Great Camps, which usually consisted of a main lodge and multiple outbuildings around the estate. Bearhurst, one of the few remaining Great Camps, embodies all the romance early visitors discovered in this beautiful area. Situated near the village of Speculator in Hamilton County, a short, scenic drive from either the Northway or NYS Thruway, Bearhurst is located on Lake Pleasant’s south shore, the "quiet side" of the lake, just 1 1/2 miles from the popular Camp-of-the-Woods. In addition to the main lodge, which is the Armstrong’s private residence in the summer, Bearhurst has five guest cottages. We invite you to join us for a extraordinary vacation experience. ... more   less
