We spent two nights here and incorporated the battlefield tour of Spionkop which we found extremely informative and well executed, we even had a packed lunch provided. The rooms are rustic but spotless with a very comfortable bed and a fantastic view. Breakfast and dinner were outstanding and all staff members were accommodating and friendly.
Honestly this place is an absolutely ‘must visit’. We only stayed for 2 nights but would have loved more. Arrival. Really easy to find, off the main road for some distance but we had a normal albeit a high off the ground hire car and had no issues. The people at the lodge are all very special, probably some of the nicest and best we have ever had the pleasure to meet. Room. Our cabin was wonderful, a huge bed, lovely comfy bedding and that amazing view. No noise apart from the birds and animals. Food. Not sure what to say apart from wow. We are both vegetarians and the food was absolutely incredible. The presentation and quality would put many a restaurant to shame. Activities. We decided to do some of the marked trails, easy to follow. Take advice and borrow wellingtons if it has been raining as it gets muddy underfoot. We were joined by 2 of the dogs which was great fun. This is really a special place to stay. If you like the outdoors and something different but very comfortable and memorable then it is definitely a place to go.…
My family and I spent a wonderful week at the Three Tree Hill Lodge this September! Having known South Africa mainly for its Safaris, we didn’t know what to expect in the Northern Drakensberg, but were more than pleased with the experience offered to us. We were welcomed into a family of both humans and animals from the first day on. The entire staff was more than friendly and helpful, wanting to show us what their piece of the world has to offer. We explored the grounds by foot, bike and even horseback, so there was something to enjoy for everyone. Especially the walking safari of the game reserve was breathtaking, keeping even us late-risers wide awake. The food was also simply delicious and thoughtfully planned and prepared. A special thanks to Cheryl, Simon and their team for creating such a lovely environment. You made our trip very memorable!…
We visited Three Tree Hill at the beginning of our South Africa holiday and we could not have found a better place to start our trip. The staff are exceptional, and so friendly. Our room was extremely comfortable and cosy on the cool evenings (with heated blankets which were perfect). The food was delicious and the wine was cellar a treat to explore. Don’t miss the morning safari walk and the tour of the Spion Kop battlefield. Both are unforgettable.
Three Tree Hill was a wonderful, peaceful getaway. Staff were really helpful and friendly. Rooms are beautiful. Nature walk was incredible, and really interesting. Food was delicious. Drinks in the cosy lounge with its warm fireplace, was a lovely way to spend the evening, before dinner. The wine cellar is another lovely addition to the lodge. Highly recommend this lodge.
From the moment we arrived, Melanie helped us feel so incredibly welcome and from then on, every person we met at the lodge was completely centred around your needs and how you gain the most from your visit. The food was amazing throughout and they always catered for the needs of my younger son. The service was faultless and we stayed for 4 nights and was able to fit in one of Zahara’s personal tours of spioenkop and a full, inspiring trip into history as he so brilliantly described the boer war and the characters involved and took us to the key places on the battlefield - bringing all the details to life and the whole family was entranced by this fantastic half day adventure. Nothing was ever too much trouble, Cheryl (owner) even organised for me and kids to have a horse ride through the magnificent farmland, Zahari organised for a guided mountain bike tour for our family and the walking maps provided around the lodge were a fantastic way to pass a few hours. We stayed in the Churchill’s lodge and wow is the only word I can find. As we went in winter, we were stunned when we got back from dinner to find a roaring log fire on and hot water bottles nestled in each bed. Literally nothing was too much trouble for the hosts of three tree hill lodge and every member of staff was the role model of customer care, tailoring for needs and being just so focused on your break being magnificent. Never have we felt so well cared for on holiday and I would return here with my family again and again. 5 star in every aspect of the stay. Incredible!…
Often reviews are a single point in time based on alignment of offering and patron … I’d like to offer that in the case if Three Tree Hill Lodge I’ve returned again again since 2013 and I have never left happier. My most recent visit I stayed at the more secluded Churchills with stunning views and cosy fire. All meals are tasty and nourishing. The wine list is well balanced. I loved being able to eat in the wine cellar, deck and patio. Cheryl’s game walk was fantastic and I know my partner enjoyed the war history excursion as well. Melanie is fantastic and nothing is ever too much trouble. We also went to Cathedral Peak for a day and the drive there and back is was doable. Three Tree Hill continues to deliver consistent value for money. I can’t wait to return!
When we arrived we were a bit skeptical as the place looked very simple and basic. However this cattle farm will surprise you. 5 star for me means service, accommodation and food is on point. The welcome was so warm, all the staff are so genuine in their efforts to ensure every family member has a great stay. The accommodation is spacious and comfortable. It has a rustic old school vibe, I usually prefer a more modern look/vibe. We travelled with young kids and board, games, puzzles and much more was provided to keep them entertained. The food, was amazing, so delicious, organic, always in point. The kids were always catered for and considered. We had to drive for about an hour to get a closer view of the mountains and I would recommend going with a good SUV that can handle muddy and wet dust road if it’s raining. Overall I would definitely go back. It’s a lovely, quiet, getaway from the hustle and bustle. There are also some nice trails to do. I think 3 nights max here will do.…
Incredible farm setting, great views, Burchell cottage was top notch, Melanie was an incredible host, perfect for families/kids... and THE FOOD! Best food we've ever had at a lodge. Plus, a perfect location to explore the various regions of the Drakensberg. Really had an amazing stay. Our only complaint was the overwhelming white-male-colonizer-war decor. Walls and walls and placemats full of white men fighting. Sure, we can learn from war history – but there was zero representation of the women and native (black) Africans the war affected too. Just glorifying the two white countries that stole the land then fought each other over it (even a photo of a colonizer's tombstone above the toilet!). It's 2022 and the world has changed a lot, so maybe it's time to tone down the colonialism history...…
A beautiful part of the world. The scenery & views were breathtaking, our lodge was very private with an enormous deck looking over the game reserve & Spionkop. If you do nothing else, make sure you do the battlefields, their guide, Ron Gold, speaks from a place of so much knowledge and you'll be transported back to that time in history. The staff were incredibly helpful and organised tickets to The Drakensberg Boys Choir - an absolute must! Our host, Cheryl arranged a gin tasting in the superb Molly Blackburn library - we had no idea South Africa had so many wonderful gins! We will most definitely be returning, make sure it's on your "must visit" list.
