Excellent location overlooking sea and Island of Ithaca.
Very quiet.
10 minutes walk from Harbour. Minutes walk from Paradissos Beach.
The best local restaurant 2 minutes walk away.
Best rooms on upper floor - allocated to Sunvil.
Basically a small friendly & simple family run hotel.
No safe deposit facilities.
Although b&b provided their breakfast big disappointment...guests encouraged to bring own food to table! Hard boiled eggs daily. Poor coffee machine. Inadequate toaster.
Nice pool area, however no cushions supplied for sunbeds. Lounge bar never open.
Refrigerator for guest's use on stairs.
A delightful hotel spoilt by the owners lack of enthusiasm for providing those 'little things' that would make this hotel a real 'gem'.

This is a special hotel. Family owned and run and it shows. Have been reading all the other reviews so I won't repeat at any length. Location, cleanliness, clean towels every day, staff (family), graceful building/pool area, beautiful gardens and welcome are all 5 star plus. We were in a side room on the first floor; it was great, slightly more cozy than others but the benefits were a private balcony and the rural surroundings, as well as a side sea view, we visited our chicken neighbours every day. The location is really something, and so well placed for a most wonderful beach directly opposite (hard to believe this now we are home) and the local tavernas. Although the very good Paradise Taverna is literally on the doorstep do try others - it's too easy, like us, to consider the Taverna as part of the Hotel and not move around! If like us you like fruit and a Greek Yoghurt to start the day, do as we did, buy it in and enjoy along with the more than adequate breakfasts provided. As we had been out in the car every day we only lunched there once and it was really good and very reasonably priced. If you have mobility issues, the short "climb" to the hotel from the road may be an issue to explore further, one way and another quite a few steps. Very Highly Recommended really for all other than perhaps children as it is a quiet peaceful hotel with nothing specific for them. The island itself is stunning, we love it and a hire car is a must to really enjoy it, we hired from the Village - Star Villas - very good and a nice couple who own it. Aghia Efimia is a great location, it has a village feel and has real shops for real people with just a few tourist ones thrown in for good measure. A great holiday!

Recently stopped at the Gonatas, really clean and tidy, friendly owners and staff. It's rated as a 2 star but deserves 3 or more. Having looked around the island Agia Effimias seems the best area, couple of nice beaches/coves on the doorstep and a short drive to some must see places. Hired a car from a small place in the village and got a much better deal than through the tour company. Onl;y niggle {and you need to keep this in perspective} no kettle in the room and the breakfast is a bit basic, but I would recommend the place above most other places we've stopped.

Stayed at the Gonatas hotel about 4 weeks ago and really enjoyed our stay there. FIrst of all the hotel is very clean, with our room being cleaned everyday ,bed linen changed every other day and frequent change of towels. The room we stayed in was bright and airy, free air conditioning and best of all,a seaview which was STUNNING !!
The staff are extremely friendly and helpful ,Nikki , Sonia and the rest of the family work very hard at making you feel welcome and requests for early morning calls posed no problem and were punctual. Although breakfast would have benefitted with more choice i.e. cheese and yogurt there was still plenty to eat.
The pool area was clean with plenty of sunbeds, certainly enough for all the guests whilst I was there and lunches were available.
Location of the hotel is good ,a stroll across the road brings you to the beach which is very pebbly , aqua shoes are a good investment here . .A ten minute stroll ttakes you down to the harbour area and the tavernas .
There is an erratic bus sevice to Sammi but there is a free bus to Myrtos beach.
I was very sad when it came to the end of our stay there , and would not hesitate to go there again.

Arrived at the hotel to a greating that can only be compared to that of a long lost family member(not been before), Sonia and Nicky were great as they welcomes us took us to our room and made us feel at home straight away. The room as with many in greece was basic, but that was not an issue to us, it was always cleaned and very tidy as was this small hotel in all areas. The location was just what we were looking for. Its always nice to wake up and see beautiful views across the sea with mountains in the distance

There is a small swiming pool and an areas whwre you can get some simple snacks, buit it was always nice to eat breakfast looking over the island with the blue skys sea and mountains in the distance

The hotel is just on the edge of the village. The village was a short and very enjoyable 10 min walk(that was a slow walk) where there was a number of good places to eat and relax as you watched the people and yatchs across the small village harbour.

The village does not have a bus service, it does have a few taxis though. so it depends on how you like to spend your holiday but we decided to rent a car for a few days this gave us the combination of a relaxing hassle free break and the chance to see some other parts of the island.

In the and around the harbour there are a number of tavernas that you can get good food at resonable prices we tried most of them at one time or another and found spiros to be a good choice for variety and service. Another was on on the road as you leave the village towards Sami it was called "the local" at first we were not sure if we would try it, but in the end we gave it a go and found the meal to be good and the menu slightly varied those in the main square.

Whilst in the main square it is also good fun to watch the local dogs there is one in particular that comes complete with a bell and a neckchief a small thing that likes to chase cars asa hobby (not sure what made him choose the car as some did not get the treatement) it was strange to see this small thing trying bark and nibble the tyres

All in all the island is great and relaxing the resort is just the place and the hotel was fantastic

The Gonatas Hotel is a typically Greek hotel with an unrivalled setting overlooking Sami Bay and Ithaca. The pool and the relaxed, friendly pool bar were a highlight. Our side sea view room (21) had a huge terrace with its own lemon tree and abundant flower pots attracting gorgeous butterflies. There was a full size fridge, a small TV, very good air conditioning and everything was kept spotlessly clean by delightful staff. A continental breakfast with fresh breads and pastries, cereals, daily special extras and juices/coffee/tea is included. This family owned, thoughtfully run hotel exceeded our expectations for complete relaxation and enjoyment of Cephalonian landscape, seascape and sunshine. The Paradise Beach Taverna opposite was terrific, many of the other guests were on repeat visits, and we made another reservation before we ourselves checked out! Huge thanks to Nikki, her family and the whole team. Our week at the Gonatas was hugely relaxing and gave us just the perfect 'recharge' you hope for from an escape to a Greek island. The local village is an easy stroll and the choices for eating and drinking are very good relative to the size of the marina. We even found a 1st Century Roman Villa Mosaic, intact, in a side street. See you in 2019!

top floor room 42....fridge, air con
.The Hotel (bed and breakfast) is situated 500 meters further along the coast than the main village of Agia Efimia. it sits the other side of the road from an absolutely stunning pebbled beach. This beach we used a lot, fabulous for swimming, snorkelling and a real winner.
The accommodation is ran by Niki and her team plus family members. The best hosts we have come across from any of our travels, second to none
rooms spotless, cleaned daily. bed linen and towels changed daily.
Air con is a must in july and free to use.
balcony area large and views spectacular.
breakfasts varied and as substantial as you want to make them.. staff will cook you something different if required.
we often took our dinner at the hotel as we found them really tasty and very good value for money. They where often followed by a surprise sweet courtesy of the staff
pool area is kept clean and tidy with plenty of sun beds to share.
the main village is close by with plenty of excellent tavernas and a few quiet bars overlooking the harbour. pharmacy and supermarkets also in village.
myrtos beach is only 4 miles to the west and Sami 3 miles to the south.

Overheard on a boat trip – “The Gonatas is absolutely awful” – this by someone who definitely wasn’t staying there! Like most family-run hotels in the Greek Islands it is basic, but extremely clean. Bedrooms were cleaned every day of our 14-day holiday and bedding and towels were changed every other day. A full-size fridge in the room is really useful. The family who own it are really friendly and yes, the breakfast can be a little boring but Nicky bakes fresh cakes every day which is a nice touch. There is plenty of room around the pool although the sun-beds could do with mattresses but it is a 2-star hotel and a very good one at that.
The resort is laid-back and relaxing and the centre is a 10-minute ‘holiday stroll’ away. We paid between €28 and €35 for a two-course dinner which included a litre of the house wine. Have to say we weren’t disappointed with any of the restaurants we ate in and especially liked Finikas (which has a nice bar upstairs overlooking the harbour), Spiros and Carena which had a smaller and slightly different menu from the others and was excellent. All the restaurants were giving complimentary puddings, either pastries, fruit or ice-cream and Carena a half-litre of wine per couple.
We hired a car through Star Villas who were very helpful and a little boat from Boulevard Boats for the day - a cool box and parasol is also included. We also took a boat trip to Ithaca which is a really lovely island – reminded us of Paxos.
Assos is definitely worth a visit as is Anti-Samos Beach which has a fab beach taverna and free parking. Just remember to take beach shoes as the beaches in the north are pebbles and the Gonatas doesn’t have hairdryers! Would certainly return to the Gonatas.

We visited the Gonatas with high hopes after all the reviews we had read.
Good: wonderful views. We was so lucky to be on the top floor. So local to all the restaurants and wonderful beach just outside the hotel but still far away enough to be quiet. Nicky her mum and Maria were so welcoming and could not do enough for us. The pizzas they make at lunch were just lovely. A daily change of sheets (but I do think this was because we was on top floor and this is normally through Sunvil)

Bad: to start with the breakfast. Very bland and no real choice. All you get is crispbreads, toast, boiled eggs, cake and cereal. If you wanted hot breakfast or the Greek yoghurt and honey this all came at a charge we wouldn't do as we had already paid for breakfast. We often walked into the town for breakfast when it all got too monotonous. The pool was very hit and miss, a couple of times it wasn't cleaned And was quite murkey. They also let anyone outside use the pool which again really should be for residents. One day we had a family of 5, 3 of which were teenagers in the pool playing ball, very loud and boisterous and we couldn't get in the pool. The sun beds round the pool were either broken or uncomfortable. Now the room, lovely and clean but the shower was awful so small and flooded the bathroom every time we had a shower. No tea or coffee making facilities. The beds uncomfortable, pillows flat but was changed on request. My husbands bed had a spring poking through too. There is a lovely bar area on 1st floor which was never open which is such a shame, would be such a lovely end to the night and a chance to meet the other residents. If they spent some money on the hotel this would be just perfect.

I don't want to sound too negative as Agia Erfimia is just lovely. So picturesque and the locals are so friendly. It can be as restful or as busy as you want to make it. The bus at the top of the town to Fiskardo is a great day out and all for 4euros each, well worth the trip

Yes. We took a trip around the island. I booked with Thomas cook at the hotel and it was 40 euros per person but I have been told book direct and it's 35 euros. It's a short walk from the hotel to the harbour. It left at 9.15am and got back at 5.30pm. They sold drinks and ice creams and snacks on board. There was a swim in the sea stop, then a shopping stop or coffee in a beautiful harbour then on to another bay for lunch. Lots of choice of where and what to eat. My daughter and I have a nice meal. Pork chop with new potatoes and a pasta dish I think 9 euros and 6 euros and a wine at 3.50 euros. The yatche said daily cruises on the side. Another couple took a trip on the same boat to 3 islands. It was a stunningly beautiful day. I could send you a couple of photos if you like. I didn't hear anyone have a bad word to say.
