I have been staying here for years. First thing to say is it is not for everybody. The walls are thin and the bathrooms are small. This is not a modern building and if you want that go stay in a chain somewhere else. It is well worth upgrading to a bed sitting room. This is not a place where...

A great B&B in the mountains of North Carolina. Outstanding breakfasts and dinner (optional). Many small towns nearby to visit with unique stores. Really enjoyed a visit to The Old School Antiques on Highway 441 between Dillsboro and Franklin. Went there 15 - 20 years ago.

Just returned from a girl's getaway weekend at Balsam Mountain Inn. The six of us stayed in 3 rooms on the first floor. We were all comfortable in our rooms and charmed by the historic surroundings. The common areas - lobby/sitting room, library, and porches are nice places to chat, play games, or enjoy the view. The breakfasts were delicious...

My husband and I LOVE the Balsam Mountain Inn. We stayed here on our honeymoon last October, and we are going back sometime this month. We absolutely love the quaint atmosphere, the quiet down time, and the beautifully decorated rooms. The food is delicious, and we just love being in the mountains. I would recommend this as the best inn...

From one who usually doesn't review unless I can write a positive one: we were robbed at Balsam Mtn Inn. I felt badly for my husband who had really stretched the budget at $150+ per night for us to stay there. The ambiance factor only works IF guests get some rest and there was almost no way to sleep per...

Stayed at the Balsam last weekend. It is a beautiful inn, and the people who work there are kind. The location was a little hard to find but not too bad. Nearby in Waynesville there are a lot of restaurants, breweries and shops to visit. I liked Waynesville. The scenery was fabulous, the mountains beautiful. It was a little too...

Every year we take a two week motorcycle trip in Search of America. On these annual trips we stay off the inter-states and only take the back roads. Our way of trying to recapture what life was like in a simpler time. It was a long motorcycle trip from Connecticut down to Balsam, North Carolina but the trip was well...

My wife and I found the place on living social. We showed up on a Thursday night and it was raining. We pulled up and it looked like something out the The Shining, haha. It's a cool location. It's right by the blue ridge parkway, so you can drive and see the scenic routes and go on trails. The rooms...

We arrived in the afternoon after an overnight snowfall. Once we left the interstate, the roads in Balsam were just being plowed. We tried to get up to the inn on the inn curvy driveway, but our Prius hybrid was spinning halfway up. We called and the desk staff could see us and told us to back down and he...

We have just returned from spending the weekend at this wonderful inn! Due to a recent ice storm we were pretty much confined - what a lucky break for us! No TVs and no phones - but warm fireplaces throughout, especially in the library, and plenty of books and games made for such a wonderful relaxing get away! There is...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Read, rest, ramble and romp at the Balsam Mountain Inn! Nestled among lofty Smoky Mountain peaks just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Balsam Mountain Inn was completed in 1908 to serve the highest railway depot in the east. Restored in 1991, the inn now welcomes travelers with 50 cheerful rooms, rocker-filled porches, a fine library and gracious dining. Plump pillows and soft comforters inspire pleasant dreams! In December, 2011, the Inn came once again to be owned by Merrily Teasley, the innkeeper who restored the structure two decades ago. An experienced rescuer of wonderful buildings, Teasley bought the derelict inn in 1990, and her certified rehabilitation effort helped the inn – already on the National Historic Register – experience a rebirth. ... more   less
