We have been very fortunate to have visited many of the luxury hotels in the world. However, in our opinion, they have all paled in comparison to Mount Lavinia Hotel in Sri Lanka. The setting is incredible, the food is fantastic, and the staff is unbelievably warm and hospitable. This is why we make the trip from USA to Sri...

Last hotel on a weeks tour, one night stay, thank God. Was put in a room in the old building no 519. There are shops on ground floor, and a large staircase going up to upper floors. It had a red thin carpet which was loose and looked like off cuts. Arriving late into evening, and a rush to wash,(...

I knew Mount Lavinia wasn’t what it was but for nostalgic, personal reasons I wanted to stay there. Opened in 1806, it was Colombo’s answer to Raffles in Singapore, the Pen in Hong Kong, the Strand in Rangoon. A colonial era hotel for expats, grandees, tea planters. Amy Johnson stayed here, as did David Lean, William Holden, Alec Guinness and...

We are once again back at the Mount Lavinia Hotel. Our tenth visit to the hotel. We enjoy the stay at the hotel we come back every year as many others do. Very friendly and helpful staff. Always service with a smile - from the doormen to management. Large room with large comfortable bed. Sea view rooms are excellent. You...

We were a group of twelve (from grandma/dad to 8-month old grandchild) who stayed at the hotel for 9 days in February 2017, and we had a superb time there (grandma and granddad stayed there also in 2014). The hotel used to be the British Governor's residence and as such has a lot of charm. The employees are all extremely...

Like a lot of the tourist industry in Sri Lanka, this hotel has to get its act together when it comes to customer service. They should begin by answering emails which they don't. After 3 attempts to contact them (3 different addresses from their website) I had to make an expensive international phone call to book an airport pickup! The...

When you walk into reception you think, very nice 5 star hotel, but when you go to your room you think 2 star just. Paint was falling off of the walls in the room and bathroom, the corridors were in need of a paint also. The shower was a disgrace, the shower tray was heavily stained with black scratch marks,...

Stayed here on our last night of 9 day tour. We arrived about 6pm and checked out at 2.00am for our flight home. Wished we could have stayed longer. The buffet dinner was excellent with a wide choice. The staff were polite. The room was dated but must have been top notch in its day. Was very clean which is...

The hotel is right on the ocean, with lovely views, long beach walks, good swimming, a beautiful pool area. The staff is helpful and nice, and the breakfast buffet is just incredible, Save your appetite for the fresh fruit and local specialties--I particularly loved the egg hoppers.

There's no arguing that when you arrive at the hotel and are met at reception by immaculately dressed staff wearing white 'military style' uniforms you can't help feeling impressed and excited about what lies ahead. Unfortunately the bedroom and en suite bathroom that we were allocated did not match the outward facing grandeur. Both rooms were very tired and needed...
