From the moment I got off the bus I felt I was in paradise. Everything exceeded my expectations - the environment, staff, casita, activities, treatments, the pools and much more. Although I don’t have a strong taste for Mexican spices, there’s plenty of choices. I was surprised to learn that about 85% of the guests return, but once I was there I saw why. I actually made a tentative reservation before I left and now plan to return. It’s truly a combination of a spiritual retreat and heath spa. It was also comfortable to go alone because people are so friendly and it’s okay to sit at different tables at meals.

My husband and I went at Christmas, and they had the most amazing concerts, outstanding performances, charismatic and loving staff. It was a relaxing experience and super personalized. I felt as safe as I feel in my own home. It was so spotless, and everything was meticulously organized. They had the same exercise class multiple times so that everyone could attend. The attention to detail and concern for the guests was unparalleled, and I’ve been to many resorts. It was the only real respite in the middle of a pandemic.
I worship whoever is in charge of the kitchen. The desserts were artful – yes, the portion sizes were small, but they hit the spot. They used chocolate on some of them from the chocolate factory next door, and it was to die for. Everyone made me feel so pampered!

This beautifully planted (albeit with a lot of non-native plantings) spot in the mountains is a bit unreal, but that helps to make it restful. Despite its location in Mexico, all the staff speak English -- and have been trained to drop whatever they are doing to escort lost and wandering guests to their destinations. The food is excellent and plentiful, so it will take discipline to lose or maintain weight. Clientele is mostly women from 40 to 80, with a heavy dose of Californians. The general style of the buildings and grounds is Mexican/American/European, with wandering paths throughout. I thought the instructors were good to excellent, and was impressed with the therapists. The caliber of other presentations was more variable, but again it was impressive that each presentation was offered whether 3 or 103 persons were in attendance. It is a very female atmosphere.

I spent a week at Rancho la Puerta, and though the classes, talks, and group activities were mostly enjoyable, it's the beauty and magical feel of the place that makes it special. The Ranch was built with love, over many decades, and its landscaping and design are quite extraordinary. My favcorite activity was just walking the expansive property, taking in the lovely gardens, the groves of oak trees, and the gentle dessert air. I was traveling by myself, but everyone I met was very friendly, and I never found myself dining alone. The food was terrific, the two main swimming pools were a total delight, and the spa treatments were excellent. One can do as much or as little as one wants at Rancho la Puerta. It's an extremely restorative spot, unlike any other spa resort I've been to and very much in a class all its own.

I was thrilled to be back at the Ranch in early November. The safety protocols that had been established made me 100% confident that the well being of all guests was of paramount importance. From limiting the number of guests, social distancing, adding a bit of extra time between classes for more cleaning, keeping huge sliding doors open during any indoor lectures or classes, and having guests eat only with whoever joined them on the trip made the Ranch experience incredibly safe. Masks were everywhere and there were endless smiles beneath them! My trip back to the Ranch made me feel more normal than I had felt all year, and I can't wait to return! From the amazing staff, fitness classes, lectures and incredible food, the Ranch exceeds all expectations! What a thoroughly safe and delightful experience!

"My husband and I had a glorious visit to the ranch. The food was spectacular and we still dropped a few pounds. The classes, spa treatments, and accommodations exceeded our expectations so much that we planned our return 4 months later! Pilates, pickle ball and the scalp treatment were my favorites. The magic at The Ranch is real." Katie Harris

I’ve been to other spas (Canyon Ranch, Miraval in the US) and will only go to Rancho La Puerta now that I discovered it. The soul of the place - not even sure spa is the right word for its overall healing experience. After my first visit in 2019 I intended to go annually. Covid disrupted that plan but as soon as I was vaccinated I made my reservation. The Ranch is magical. Almost everyone there is a return guest - that stat tells you how special this place is. Their Covid protocols made us feel very safe.

After a year delay, my granddaughter and I made it to family week. She loved it and can’t wait to go back with her brother in 2022! She especially enjoyed the food - I was a little concerned about that since she is not a vegetarian, but she mostly ate what was being served the adults with an occasional entree made especially for kids. I have seen others complain about mosquitoes, but we have never had a problem with them. My granddaughter especially enjoyed the cooking class, sand volleyball and all the art classes. I never have a bad time at the Ranch and it was a joy to introduce the experience to my granddaughter.

Beautiful place. Great concierge level attention to detail. It's like a cross between a summer camp for adults and spa retreat. Multiple activities scheduled on the hour throughout the day: fitness related, educational or for the soul. Or, you can just chill. It's a secure walking campus that attracts an interesting group of people.

The Ranch is so much more than just a wellness retreat. Always love sitting with strangers at a table for lunch or dinner and walking away with new friends. The athletic and personal development courses are fun and intriguing. All the physical course leaders are great fun. The personal development courses are lead by interesting professionals in their fields.

Has anyone ever gotten travelers diarrhea at Rancho La Puerta?
Answer from Susan S
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania1,131 contribution395 helpful votes
I have been there more than 20 times and I have never heard of anyone getting travelers diarrhea. It is my understanding that the water all comes from the Colorado River--the "ranch" is very close to the border with the U.S. There is a spigot with filtered water adjacent to the hot and cold water in every room as well as water fountains with filtered water throughout the property. They also always have a nurse or a doctor on site for any health issues. I am going there again this coming January. It is a wonderful place to re-generate after the holidays.

Is it possible to tour the property during the day?
Answer from Susan S
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania1,131 contribution395 helpful votes
You should ask at the sales office in San Diego. they have an 800 number. I had a guest once for a day and paid for his lunch. I was staying there and made the arrangements when I was there. Not sure why you want a tour. Part of the fun of arriving for the first time is being wowed by the grounds and ambience. It is gorgeous.

are small dogs allowed? someone in our party will be bringing a "service dog". thanks
Answer from Scott Draper
San Diego, California2 contributions
Dear Roger C., Below are the requirements we must consider regarding a service dog: Pre-Arrival • The reason you need to travel with a Service Dog must be disclosed in advance of your arrival, and ideally at the time of making a reservation. • A doctor’s letter stating the need to have a Service Dog and the Service Dog certification must be sent it advance to our First Aid staff. • Vaccination records are necessary for ease of transport across the border. • We will inform all employees and other guests that a Service Dog will be on property. An announcement will be included in each guest’s Welcome Packet, and we’d love to address your Service Dog by name. While at the Ranch • The Service Dog must wear the Service Dog Vest at all times and remain on a leash when outside of the room. • Service Dogs are not allowed in the common areas where other guests will be gathered (i.e. gyms, hikes, dining hall, etc.). • You are responsible for cleaning up after your Service Dog. There is a $250 cleaning fee and additional fees may be applied if there are any damages. We trust this information is helpful and provides you with the information necessary for planning. Please contact our Reservations Office for specifics and further questions. With all good wishes.
