The Grosvenor Pulford Hotel & Spa is often described as an elegant haven with live piano music enhancing its inviting ambiance, although it's noted that some areas could benefit from an update. While the cleanliness and design of the rooms are commended, issues such as odors and maintenance have been pointed out. Opinions on value are split, with some guests finding it reasonable and others questioning the costs. The hotel's amenities, like the luxurious spa and beautiful gardens, generally receive high praise, yet service quality seems to vary, with reports of both commendable and lackluster experiences.

On a whim before back to school I thought I would book a night away with my son somewhere near Delamere Forest and Blue planet as these were our final days of summer treats. Didn’t know what to expect, but photos looked nice and I wanted somewhere with a pool.
So with it being Covid times I thought I would check to see if pool was open before booking, it was but times were limited to half hour swims which was perfectly understandable, so booked a slot on each day. I rang on the day to confirm this was still ok and yes it was.
On arrival greeted warmly by reception, they had perspex sheets up to secure guests and staff. Signs to say for guests to wear masks in public areas. Reception efficient and friendly. Our room was on the first floor I had booked a family room and on entering I would say it was beyond my expectations. Light bright and very spacious and overlooking the zen garden. The room had a double and a single bed as well as a two seater couch. There was 2 tv’s, tea and coffee and biscuits , fridge to store things. in bathroom villeroy Boch whites and the usual body wash, conditioner and body moisturiser as well as sewing kit, shoe shine, ear buds. Really lovely room. If I was to be picky I would ask for glasses in the bathroom so we could have had a drink of water through night, (if glass can’t be provided due to Covid then plastic would do) also the room was a family room and my son of 7 years old had to drag a chair to kneel on so he could wash his teeth so when planning heights of basins this really needs to be thought about.
I can’t comment on the food as I choose to eat at the Nags head which is a 5 min walk away as it had a higher trip advisor rating.
The spa area is beautiful and the zen garden gorgeous, the reception staff at spa helpful and directed us in the use of pool. Lovely swim and due to Covid restrictions not many allowed to swim. All very good and made you feel safe. Check out is 11 which is delightful as you don’t have to rush for a 10 check out.
Overall my whim payed off so much that I will be booking back in to revisit hopefully as an adult not as a mum so I can take more advantage of spa treatments 😆

We once again had a wonderful stay in the Grosvenor Pulford Hotel & Spa. (room 67) The staff are the best we have met in any hotels we have stayed in. The food and service in Palm court was 1st class. Our room was extremely comfortable, the decor was lovely, the wet room shower was wonderful. Each day upon return to our room it had been cleaned to a very high standard, bed made and the bottles of water, tea and coffee replaced. My 94 year old mother stayed in room 19 and loved every minute of her stay, all the staff made her feel most welcome. I spent quite some time in the pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna which was wonderful and relaxing. We plan to return in July with my sister and her husband from Australia. Thank you Grosvenor Pulford Hotel & Spa for a wonderful short break.

A second visit to the hotel, the first over Christmas. Good welcome, with all their Covid protections outlined and you are given a large bottle of hand sainitiser to use during the stay.

This time we stayed in one of the better rooms 78/80 which are above the Palm Court. These rooms are spacious and attractive.

Room 80 has a settee so that you have a lounge area, to sit rather than just sitting on the bed.

Bathroom is a delight, massive walk through Rainforest shower, simple to operate and a joy. In addition there was a large free standing bath, which even had views of a television in the bathroom.

Good selection of toiletries, only one minor design fault, in our opinion, the sink taps we set so low in the sink it was impossible to fill the kettle, having to repeated use a glass to have a drink!

Air conditioning worked well, but joy of joys we had two skylights which opened which allowed natural ventilation, one drawback you are above the extractor fans for the main restaurant and during the time that these operate you might get the smell of cooking.

We ate breakfast in the Palm Court, and here there is a need for better standardisation of approach to Covid requirements, morning one great service, with good information and disposable menus, really helpful and top notch. Day 2 different member of staff, no menus, no information (apart from you can have a full English or continental) thankfully having eaten here the day before we knew what the offerings were, and how flexible the kitchen could be.

Very good on allergy awareness

We took advantage of the hotel’s Fab Friday offer( available during January & booked directly through the hotel)
Stayed in an executive room
Bottle of prosecco & chocolates in the room
£25 pp towards food or drink
Breakfast next morning
Access to the pool & gym
I can only say that we had an amazing stay in this lovely hotel near Chester & would highly recommend.
We checked in at 2pm by a very nice receptionist - no issues & straight to our room (62).
We were thrilled with our room which overlooked the Japanese Garden. The size, decor & amenities were all appreciated as was the immaculate cleanliness of the room & bathroom 10/10.
A very nice bottle of chilled Prosecco & handmade chocolates were awaiting us.
We did take advantage of the pool & facilities which were very nice.
In the evening we eat at the Palm Restaurant, thoroughly enjoying our food & the ambience.
We had a great nights sleep, only minor disturbance as other residents came back to their rooms. Extremely comfortable bed too!
Husband used the gym next morning - good equipment.
Breakfast was enjoyable with the usual variety of goodies including a full English too.
Checkout again was very quick
We will most definitely be returning to the Grosvenor Pulford - thank you for making our stay so enjoyable!!

It was about 2am on Sunday morning when I decided I was going to write this review. Our pokey room on the ground floor, directly adjacent to an outside seating area, was providing a terrible sleep. The paper thin walls and the sound of water running to and from bathrooms on three sides of us was depressing. We’d paid almost $400 for a two night stay and after 12 hours had been nothing but disappointed. Now, we couldn’t sleep.

The hotel is not all bad. The building and grounds are lovely and well kept. Most of the staff were friendly and there are some nice walks from the door. Sadly that’s where our positive experience ends.

We should have taken warning from the booking experience. We had tried to book direct and found the website very glitchy. We emailed, messaged on Facebook and rang the hotel but to no response. We finally got a room and were able to book a slot for dinner at 7:30pm, then the day before the booking they just cancelled it by email with no comment or mention of needing to book again. When I was able to get through to the hotel over the phone, I enquired about dinner, as our package included this, and was told that there were now only options remaining at 5pm and 9pm.

We chose 5 but what we didn’t realise is that that would mean only being offered the ‘day menu’ and not the much nicer ‘dinner menu’ advertised online. Sadly, the receptionist didn’t mention while on the phone that we would also need to book a pool slot. As such, by the time we checked in, there wasn’t one single slot available to use the facilities throughout our three days stay.

The food was ok but being offered no water, highly limited gluten free options (two steaks and a prawn cocktail), zero gluten free and vegetarian/vegan options, and not having our first two drinks chosen from the menu available left us feeling that the experience was overvalued.

On top of having no pool access there was also no water available in the rooms. This was a surprise for a 4 star hotel.

Breakfast was okay. Impressive to see a buffet being offered during COVID-19 but it wasn’t enough to save the experience.

We left after just the one night.

We weren’t asked how our stay was at early checkout. We were told that we wouldn’t be getting a refund for leaving early.

Fair enough and judging by the reviews below, we were just unlucky. The restaurant and the pub seemed very popular with locals and a bit of a spot for birthdays/anniversary’s etc so there was a nice atmosphere. But, inc food and drink, at $500+ for two nights - not including the spa treatments on the side - I’d expect better.

It’s a weird time at the moment and I appreciate hotels are doing all they can to reopen but if you do choose to go I’d highly recommend ringing ahead to confirm your bookings/requirements and asking not to be placed on the ground floor.

Just returned from - a three night family stay. Overall we thought it was excellent value for money, when compared with other spa hotels we’ve tried. The children loved the pool (it is quite tricky to get to the shallow end so floats definitely needed if bringing young children!) The restaurant interiors are stunning and so relaxing to dine in, yet not so formal you feel on edge with a young family. The staff in Palm Court at dinner time were very attentive. Our room was very comfortable, clean and modern.

We did feel that the service in some areas could be improved to make this a five star hotel and to elevate the overall customer experience. Mainly due to the very slow check in and check out which I will feed back to the hotel and we definitely would have welcomed assistance with taking luggage to the room. Our room wasn’t ready after check in time which after a long journey with young children is a bit inconvenient. Some of the bar staff could be trained to be customer focused, ensuring dirty plates are always cleared (during breakfast) in a timely fashion and not keeping people waiting at Nelsons Bar, some of the staff seemed to be chatting at the bar instead of seeing to customers waiting. The children loved the pool, however the layout could be safer as it doesn’t lend itself to easily getting to the shallow end and could maybe do with modernising a bit. Also the spa manager ‘reminded’ us that we had to be out by 11am with the children at 10.30am, on holiday I think it’s okay to not be reminded unless are late out 😬.

But overall we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend 👍.

Staff very friendly. Children asked for things that weren't on the menu and was accommadated for with no issues. We eat in Palm Court which was very busy this evening but the service and quality of food and presentation were up to their usual high standards. Room was very comfy, clean and had all the little added extras that make your stay. Swimming pool although we were limited to just over half an hour due to Covid was good as we had it to ourselves and changing rooms had all cleaning/sanitising products in place. As usual we left feeling relaxed & revitalised and ready to tackle the week ahead.

We booked last minute for a 1 night stay and had never stayed here before. We were nervous to go anywhere in the current climate but so pleased we went ahead with the booking. The reception and main lobby is beautiful and we instantly felt safe when we arrived with guests and staff wearing masks and respectful of others space. We had a family room as my daughter's friend joined us and our room was ideal for a party of 4 especially with teenagers! We entered the room where the double sofa bed was made up for the girls and then a spiraled staircase up to our room. We had a lovely meal at the Nelson Bar and then a drink in the relaxing garden. Wonderful staff and we cannot wait to return.

Our second visit to this hotel near Chester, this time to celebrate our birthdays as there are only two days between them.

The hotel is lovely although navigating round it can be a little like a rabbit warren to say the least.

Our room was on a different wing this time so instead of a window over the dining room it was onto a flat roof instead so hardly an inspiring view but it was much quieter.

There was a chilled bottle of prosecco and birthday wishes which was a really sweet touch.

The bottle was left untouched as we intended to use the pool before our spa treatments so would save it until before the dinner reservation.

The pool was quite busy but signing into the spa itself was a breeze again, I had a back massage and facial treatment as a birthday present which was so very relaxing.

The evening meals both night were delicious as usual and Hannah our server was really helpful and friendly.

Breakfast the first morning was less successful as no-one came to take our order for tea/coffee and there didn't seem to be any chance of the cook to order items. We did manage to catch the attention of one of the servers who promised to bring pots of tea but she didn't reappear and the drinks were a non-event.

The second morning was also unsuccessful regarding hot drinks and servers.

All in all the food is exceptional but there are some aspects that could do with improving:

Lack of staff for morning services.
Only one drinks machine working in the morning created a large, slow moving queue.
Staff wearing masks around their chins.
No USB ports in the rooms.
The pool changing areas need updating, the lockers look like 1970s kitchen units! The shower cubicles are tiny and the curtains could be more generous to fit the small apertures. In all the changing rooms are dated and a bit shabby.

All fairly small issues that could probably be dealt with easily.

On the other hand the food, spa facilities and staff are lovely.

My fiancé and I visited on 6th December for Sunday lunch - from the moment we arrived we were greeted by a friendly member of staff who made us feel welcome and quickly seated us at our table. Social distancing was in place at all times with additional sanitising at the carvery station and tables being called up one at a time. We felt safe the whole time but we’re also able to enjoy the amazing scenery around us and didn’t feel like our experience was compromised at all. The manager Liam came over to check we were having a nice time and made the effort to see how our experience was. Very friendly and a credit to the company. The food itself was exceptional, we made sure to stick around for dessert, even after a huge roast! We cannot wait to return!

Hi Amy, thanks for getting in touch and we hope that you are looking forward to your upcoming stay! You can reach Chester city center by a bus (Arriva Wales #1) which stops outside the hotel every 20 minutes. Alternatively, taxi services are available and our reception team can assist you with calling a taxi for you, or providing numbers for you to contact. Exact costs for taxi journeys will vary per time of day, however the journey into Chester is approximately £12 each way via taxi. In terms of walks, there are a few short trails in the surrounding villages of Pulford, Poulton and Lavister. There are also some fantastic, popular routes at the nearby Delamere Forest and Sandstone Trail, near which we have our sister properties The Fishpool Inn and The Pheasant Inn respectively. Many thanks, Clara Marketing Team
