I ate here at the weekend with the rest of my family after the restaurant being recommended to us by a friend and I have to say the meat selection was excellent and the choice of beef, well cooked medium and rare was really very good! I opted for lamb which was cooked beautifully and the kids cleared their plates!...

We had a family meal, for 15 people, at this hotel. I am coeliac vegetarian and the chef made a real effort to make me a meal that was extremly enjoyable. The waitress followed up my questions and requests with thought and care.

Have eaten here several times so I knew what I was letting myself in for. The food may be good but I think it is overpriced . Decide to have a pint and a sandwhich each. £4.95 for a cheese sandwich . It did come with an accompanying salad however two tomatoes ( tasteless ones at that ) the size...

I've been to the Bear a few times, once on a Sunday a long long time ago and to be honest it felt like a canteen.... HOWEVER...... we've been back a couple of times since and the pub, the old, proper bit has achieved the almost impossible. It's still a proper boozer, somewhere you feel you could sit and sink...

We had an enjoyable evening at The Bear. The food was tasty and well presented which makes a change in this day and age. The puddings were probably a little overpriced as they weren't homemade. It is a quirky building and really does have that oldy worldy atmosphere which is great. There's a couple of things though - one is...

We went to the bear for Sunday lunch. The pub was really busy and the back room was open. We all had the carvery which was very well priced with a 1 course or 2 course option. The carvery was massive a choice of 5 meats and the option on the beef of rare, medium and well done. The food...

We went, on recommendation, to try the Sunday carvery. We were not disappointed. There was a super selection of meat...in fact I haven't encountered such a large selection! The choice of veg was also tremendous. Being our first time, we didn't realise that you need to go to the bar to order, so maybe a notice would help with this?...

We were pleasantly surprised that we could get a table as we had not booked. The staff were extremely welcoming, a good range of food on the menu. The food came in good time and was well above expectation, we had not been here for many years but will certainly be returning soon.

This is an old fashioned inn which serves an excellent carvery, which, believe it or not, gives you choices of rare, medium or well done meats. The bar serves a treat of real ales, usually at least two.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The earliest reference to a building here is 1528 – this would have been a parlour, hall, buttery, dairy, and kitchen. In 1690, the building became the property of the Hurt family, which then became an alehouse and soon after known as the Olde Brown Bear Inn.  The Bear Inn, as it became known by 1735, lay on the Birmingham-Derby-Chesterfield-Sheffield turnpike road…..by 1764 it had become a prominent coaching Inn. The names and dates of all Innkeepers and owners from 1735 – 2008 is listed in the entrance hall of the Bear. Just standing beneath the beams of this fine English country Inn invites history to wash over you – sampling a pint or two of fine English ale helps the process! The fame of The Bear has spread across various counties and continents in recent years, mainly as a Gastro pub of note, a hotel, carvery & real ale venue. Real Food, Real Ale, Real People, Real Derbyshire – can be completed with Real History. The Bear can truly boast to be one of Derbyshire’s oldest & most renowned Inn & Hotels.  ... more   less
