Matheran is not a favourite destination to me.... It is dusty, crowded....... Being an automobile free zone, it does not appear to be convenient too. But my last visit in the last week (end May) helped me to change my perception a lot.... As I mentioned, the highlight of the property was its Varandah and that made our stay enjoyable....

Stayed 2 nights. The place was just as described on their website. An 1867 world and no internet, phone or television. No airconditioning and that was not a problem even at the peak of summer. The Jehangir room was spacious and the bathroom and powder room too were decent size. The tree house was a great place to chat and...

The first thing that strikes you about Neemrana is the tranquility away from the market in a silent corner. If you are looking for some timeout for yourself without distractions then this is the place. There is no TV and no mobile phone signal which makes books and your companion, the main source of attention. The only reason why I...

A wonderful place nestled amidst the greens of Matheran, The Verandah is definitely worth a stay. The manner in which this historic Victorian property has been beautifully restored is worth mentioning. We went there as a getaway for our anniversary weekend and despite the heat outside, the property was cool and breezy. None of the rooms have an AC or...

An amazing secret hideaway, peaceful, beautiful and quiet. I loved the room and the location. It was an absolute break from reality. The hotel is well presented, staff either very shy or just quiet, didn't say much but were polite. So can't complain! I also wish they had a simple a la carte menu as it would have been nice...

Matheran has always been a long time favourite, given that cars are not allowed and that most of the forests are still intact. Verandah in the forest completes your time travel experience. A gorgeous gem hidden from the away from the main market. Delicately restored, yet retains its rustic charm. If you love the old world charm this place will...

Visited this place between 23rd n 27th of April'17. Just the place one needs to get away from the madness of Mumbai or any city for that matter. An excellent retreat in the woods. Truly in nature's lap. Surrounded by forest on all sides. Charlotte Lake and Echo Point are the nearest 2 points to visit. No T.V or A.C...

My wife and I decided to spend a weekend at this property as we had noticed it on a previous trip to Matheran. We rode on my Royal Enfield motorcycle from our home in Mumbai (approximately 2.5 hours across mostly scenic roads) and walked for approx 45 minutes from the vehicle park to the hotel. (It is possible to rent...

We have been here twice. The place is naturally beautiful. Monsoons is the best time to visit. Though you lose out on locally arranged valley crossing, flying fox etc.; but you get to experience the true beauty of this hill station. About the property, its away from market. Matheran is a motor vehicle free hill station, so you have to...

Staying in a non-hotel property like Verandah in the Forest is a one-time experience. It adds to the 'once upon a time' tale. The biodiversity of the place, monkeys coming for breakfast is quite interesting. The 18th-century place is well maintained by the people. It is quite and a wonderful place to undergo a digital detox.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The paths once cleared by the British in the forests of Matheran, making it the last British hill station have acquired a new identity as the place where Bombay’s movers and shakers which include filmstars and businessmen come to spend a few quiet and peaceful days.Perched atop the Sahyadri ranges, Matheran is Asia’s only pedestrian hill resort. Chug up in a toy train, trot, or arrive in a palanquin, past gigantic mansions built by the British, the Parsis, and the Bohras. The Verandah in the Forest was the second house to be built on the isolated Western Ghats, by Captain Barr. Now, with every facility in place, it is reputed to be second to none! Indeed, the nobility of the proportions of The Verandah bring civilizational honour to the Sahyadri ranges. Lounge like never before in this verandah of your dreams. Read under the highest domestic ceiling you would have known in the salon – 12 metres/35 feet high. Stroll down to Charlotte Lake. Or take longer walks with a picnic basket. Relish the local cuisines. Heave your chest, muscle your calves, take all the oxygen back in your lungs. Link your planet with your own two feet.Find space for more space in your mind. Or lose yourself to find yourself anew.Long after you return, you will wonder who would have dared to sprawl out such a tree-home space in such spell-binding wilderness? ... more   less
