Interesting pub with rooms. Being called "The Ship" I expected it to overlook the sea but it didn't, although the beach was only a couple of hundred yards away. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the bar had a nice log fire which gave it a lot of atmosphere. Our bedroom was adequate although the bed could have... More

We have been here now three times on special occasions, the most notable being in the attic room which boasted beams, a spare bedroom with two extra beds, a lovely spacious and modern bathroom. This was excellent. Formerly we've stayed in the new annexes, rooms are smaller and in a room up some stairs from the courtyard, again smaller. All... More

Popped in recently for lunch and was impressed. The pub allows dogs on the bar area. Result. The staff were friendly and accommodating. There was a warming fire which added to the ambience. I ordered the rabbit (off the specials menu) whilst the wife had the fish & chips. I had a Woodforde Wherry bitter, of which there was a... More

I stayed just one night here while walking the Suffolk Coast Path and really liked it. My room at the top of the building was characterful and cosy. I had dinner in the congenial bar - soup followed by rabbit followed by Bakewell tart. The quality was absolutely first-rate and I thought it astonishingly inexpensive. Staff could not have been... We are always searching for dog friendly pubs, having a rescue dog that suffers from separation anxiety & cannot be left, & The Ship at Dunwich is particularly welcoming in this respect. Our daughter in law has a gluten intolerance & the staff were very understanding of this & went out of their way to help her choose those things... More

just returned from a 3 night stay at The Ship although we took advantage of the 3 night deal still felt overpriced for what it was which is essentially a pub. Our room was in the converted stable block, well equipped, very clean, freshly decorated but sadly lacking in character. As previously a stable the windows were very high, the... More

We had two rooms one in the main building one in the "garden rooms" - both really great! My teenage daughter loved her garden room, particularly the en-suite. The rooms in the main building are very cosy and warm with the same great details as the garden rooms. The bar is fantastic, rural with great beer and an open fire.... More

Three of us had lunch here on Saturday; what a treat. Service was extraordinarily good; what delightful staff, so helpful and attentive. We really enjoyed our food; the fondue is lovely and the pork belly delicious. My companions too enjoyed their meals. I have been coming here for more years than I care to count and it is always excellent.

We recently stayed here for 3 nights and despite it being half term and very busy, the staff were really helpful. The food was excellent and the general atmosphere was relaxed and family friendly. Our bedroom was very comfortable (a bit noisy as it was above the kitchen but once the kitchen closed it was fine). There are so many... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship Inn isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves. While we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things we're always happy to provide… real ales, real food and a real fire. You will find: a great pub, home-cooked food in our restaurant, a cosy hotel with comfortable, traditionally furnished bedrooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. There is also an enormous garden dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn at Dunwich extends the warmest of welcomes. ... more   less
