This classic hotel has impressive public spaces including a soaring lobby with comfortable seating and work areas. The free breakfast was better than most, with omelets cooked to order (though at times the line was long.) The breakfast area got busy on a weekend morning, but it was well-managed and there was always enough seating. Best of all, our one bedroom suite was a true suite, with separate, good-sized living room and bedroom. (This was not a "studio suite".) The bed was comfortable (particularly if you like a somewhat firm mattress) and the furnishings were modern, with a large work desk and enough charging points, etc. Some reports to the contrary, there was no encampment of homeless folks across from the entrance. Walking around the neighborhood we did encounter some homeless men and women, but saw no open drug use or toileting, were never approached for a handout and were never uncomfortable (except as sympathy required.) The immediate area is pretty quiet with some retail spaces boarded up and others with shortened hours, though there are a variety of restaurants (in addition to that in the hotel) and a couple of interesting stores. Powell's Books is not too long a walk.

Hotel's Favourite
We stayed at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Portland Downtown for two days with two of our college-aged children in March, 2023. When we reached the hotel by car, we couldn't find the entrance to the parking garage, so we called the hotel and received instructions clearly. The parking garage is adjacent to the hotel, and you have to cross the street to get inside. We didn't realize when we booked our stay that the parking charge is $45 per night! The parking garage is kind of sketchy, as is the elevator, but once we arrived inside of the hotel we were very happy. There is a valet available if you choose to use that service. The lobby is absolutely beautiful, and will take you back in time. There is a little "store" located by the front desk where you can purchase coffee, drinks and snacks. The front desk employees are very friendly and nice. We were given our key cards for our room, and took the elevator to our floor. Our room was very clean and nicely decorated. The spacious bedroom was separate from the rest of the room. It included two large beds, a large television and large windows with light-blocking shades. The bathroom was also large, and included soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion and a blow dryer. A separate wet bar is near the bathroom area and includes a mini fridge and a sink/faucet. There were two large towels, two hand towels and two wash cloths in the bathroom. We needed more towels for our family of four, so we simply called down to the front desk, and they brought more to our room. After spending 1-1/2 hours in our room, we found that the room was not getting any warmer, despite the fact that we kept turning up the thermometer, so we again called down to the front desk, and they immediately sent a maintenance person to see if something was wrong with the heater. The maintenance person was so nice and friendly, and informed us that the HVAC system in our room wasn't working, and that they would immediately move us to another room. We moved to a room two doors down, and the room was just as lovely as the first, and the heater worked well. We enjoyed an evening reception that included two alcoholic drinks per person, vegetables, cheese, crackers and dip. The reception area is decorated very nicely, and the bartender made me one of the best Lemon Drop Martinis that I've ever tasted. Our college-aged children wanted to go for a swim, so we headed down to the pool area. On the way, we met another family of four on their way back from the pool. They told us to stay away from the pool as there was a gentleman in the pool with five screaming children and a dog. We kind of laughed off their comments as we have a family of five, and have always travelled with our children. We were a little shocked as we got closer to the pool area as we started hearing a dog yipping loudly. We opened the door to the pool area, and there really was a dog in a crate by the pool yipping very loudly. The children were lovely, and we didn't mind them having a wonderful time in the pool, but the dog's barks were deafening. We left, and walked to the front desk to ask if dogs were permitted in the pool area. We spoke with Wade, and he was so friendly and nice, and told us that dogs were definitely not allowed in the pool area. We decided to call it a night, and spend time with our family in our room before bed. At around 11:00 pm, we headed for bed. For the next 1-1/2 hours, we heard children running back and forth (loudly) in the room above ours. It was very hard to get to sleep. However, once we did, the comfortable beds, linens and pillows lulled us to sleep. We were awakened the next morning by the same children running back and forth across the room above us. After a delicious full breakfast the next morning in the same lovely room where we enjoyed the evening reception, we went to talk to Wade at the front desk. We explained to Wade that we didn't get much sleep the night before or that morning because of the constant running of the children, and asked for an upgraded room. Wade was so understanding and accomodating. He apologized for the noise, the cold room the night before, and for the experience at the pool, upgraded our room to one double the size of our previous room, and waived one night's parking fee. We were beyond pleased. Wade truly went out of his way to make this stay perfect, despite a few minor problems. I'm not sure what our new room was called, but it had windows all the way around it. It was as large as a small apartment! It was beautiful furnished. Again, we attended the evening reception with our college-aged children, met new friends, and spent a nice day in Portland. Wade told us a little history about the hotel, including the fact that Elvis Presley once stayed there. We enjoyed visiting VooDoo Doughnuts just a short walk from the hotel. Although there is a heavy police presence at VooDoo Doughnuts, we felt completely safe at all times. We will definitely stay at this hotel again, and I will recommend it to my family and friends. It's in the perfect location for just about everything. Thank you, Wade, for everything you did to make our stay absolutely perfect. And to the woman bartender (I'm so sorry that I forgot your name), you make the BEST lemon drop martinis. Thank you for going out of your way to make them for me.

This is a beautiful historic hotel. The lobby is gorgeous. The staff is wonderful. We had a corner suite and it was very spacious, modern and quiet. Breakfast was good. Parking is convenient with either valet or in garage directly across from hotel. The hotel is a short walk to the Portland City Grill where we had a fabulous dinner with a view of the river. The only negative is the area seems to have a large homeless population.

Grand old hotel converted into a comfortable Embassy, with the two-room suites. Good breakfast with fresh eggs on demand, good enough gym and evening complimentary drinks. On the border of Pearl. Try to get off premise parking nearby, much cheaper....

Pros: - valet super convenient, quick, and friendly staff - check in and out fast - instant and consistent hot water in shower Cons: - furniture was dirty - you get what you pay for for the free happy hour - room temperature is inconsistent and uncomfortable - downtown (2023) is full of drug (needle) use in public and need for security at every business door

We loved the extra touches in the architecture and decor. The large spaces and extra special finishes make this hotel shine. Plus we had a great omelette maker for the complimentary breakfasts. This hotel has kept the beauty of its days as the old Multnomah Hotel.

Located in a historic building with friendly service and a great breakfast . The evening reception is a nice feature, especially after a long day exploring Portland. Only negative is that much if the area near the hotel is overrun with homeless.

The Embassy used to be the Multnomah Hotel, built in 1912. Many famous guests and quite a luxurious hotel with modern amenities in its day. We loved the beautiful lobby, historic details like the original tiled floors outside the exits and the mailbox near the elevators. The main entrance has valet but you can self park at the parking structure directly across the street. The garage entrance is on 4th street, a one way, so you might need to circle the block to access it. Parking is like you would expect downtown; expensive and grimy. The garage is $45 a day and tight to get through if you have a large vehicle. The elevator and stairs look like they haven't been washed in decades and the smell of urine is there. If you have been to New York this is similar. The doors to the garage are shut in the overnight hours and we did not see any homeless people in it, but they are around in droves. The walk to Pioneer Place or Pioneer Square is about 10-15 minutes, and there is a lot of nice shopping within those blocks; Nordstrom, Muji, Target, etc. I walked all over this area over several days alone and did not have any issues with the homeless. They are really all over downtown, often doing drugs in plain sight and are using the bathroom against walls and in planters. So, watch around yourself and watch where you walk. The city is hosing down the sidewalks in the morning so that helps. This hotel is next to VooDoo doughnuts which is nice and open almost 24 hours. Mother's Bistro is in the lobby and they have excellent meals. We stayed in a 2 room suite and it was beautiful...views from the windows were lovely and there was a nice sitting room and separate bedroom with 2 queen beds. The beds are super comfy with down comforters. The sofabed was a disgrace, ancient and worn...springs in your back type of bed. If I had thought about it, I would have bought an air mattress and slept on that. I mentioned it to the front desk and they told me the sofas are being replaced soon. Great for the next guests but didn't help me any. We found the room quiet and were never disturbed by guests in rooms around us. The pool and hot tub area is nice and down under the first level. The hot breakfast was a big reason I booked this hotel, and the made to order omelette station was great. They also had pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, and bacon as well as fruits, cereals, basic muffins and breads and yogurt. Plenty of options to fill up before you hit the city. Chinatown is a block away but really the only thing there to see are the decorative gates. Many businesses have left and there are a lot of vacant blocks as you walk that area as well as bars and adult entertainment. Walk the opposite direction towards Pioneer Square to find typical family appropriate businesses. The Saturday Market is a block away and a fabulous place to get some great food and find unique gifts. Most vendors are selling things they have made; pottery, photography, clothes, jewelry, etc. Very nice and nothing at all like a swap meet. You are some blocks from Powells and the Pearl District shopping area but it is walkable or you can use the streetcars to get around. A day pass is only $5. All in all I would stay here again because I enjoyed the hotel and being able to walk to many of the places I wanted to see.

This is a beautiful hotel with really friendly staff and an awesome in house restaurant; however, all of that is quickly forgotten when you step outside the door. One sidewalk of the street the parking garage sits on had a large group of homeless people camping out. I have nothing against homeless people but as I was traveling with just another woman it made us feel very unsafe and it was clear that some were struggling with either substance abuse or mental health issues as one stepped out in front of our car as we were driving. We parked in the garage across the street and were surprised to find that you did not need any kind of key or ticket to get into the building on foot or operate the elevator. This made us feel incredibly unsafe. We had plans that could not be cancelled our first night so we went and coming back around 10 PM left us both on edge. The next night we decided to just stay at the hotel for dinner.

Good hotel, decent location but housekeeping /maintenance could be better. The location is nice - close to key places like Voodoo Donuts, Powell bookstore, China town, etc. Sure you will see homeless, etc. close by that could make it feel unsafe, but it seemed as safe as any other part of downtown. Lobby is impressive; breakfast is standard embassy continental including g made to order eggs, rooms are good (most of them look over other parts of the hotel though - no view). However, housekeeping and maintenance could be better. We checked in and found only two bath towels - no hand towels, etc. Next morning discovered that bathroom shower gel dispenser was empty. Vents were dirtier than usual. Toilet won’t flush properly. So, clearly needs better housekeeping and maintenance- rest all is good.
