The iconic Benson Hotel is the city’s only luxury hotel that blends the charm and civility of the old world with the elegance of contemporary European design and mindful service. Built by legendary innovator and philanthropist Simon Benson in 1912, the hotel features original Italian marble floors, Austrian crystal chandeliers, and the largest collection of Circassian walnut within one building. The Benson is truly the last of its kind, with a multi-million dollar renovation completed in 2023. Curated B&B Italia furniture now welcomes guests throughout the lobby. Our Palm Court Restaurant & Bar — beckons guests to imbibe, gather and connect. We’ve refreshed our 12 meeting rooms and two dramatic grand ballrooms with new technology, lighting and design features with a modern simplicity, that in contrast, highlights the existing architecture of each space. Our 1,500 square foot fitness center has been expanded to include all new, state-of-the-art equipment and yoga studio.

The cab dropped us off at The Benson and within a minute there was a staff person to take care of our luggage and delivered right up to our room while we checked in. The staff was very professional everywhere we encountered them. We ate several times at the restaurant downstairs and had room service, food was hot and very good. The room was a nice size AND loved the soaking tub..We can't wait to return to Portland and stay here again!! The r

My husband and I spent our anniversary at the Benson in Portland during the COVID closures. As far as safety precautions go, the hotel did a wonderful job of sanitizing and maintaining social distancing procedures. There were hand sanitizing stations at each door entry, as well as before each elevator. All of their staff was masked, and each check-in or food service station was behind a plastic barrier.
I would have to say that the customer service was the best part of our stay. When choosing to book this hotel, I initially called to get more information about rooms. I was greeted by Phil, a front desk representative that helped explain the room set ups in great detail to me. When my husband and I arrived at the benson we were greeted by Phil and Michael that already knew us by name and that we were celebrating an anniversary. My husband and I were having a bit of trouble finding things to do with so many restaurant and bar closures, Phil helped us every night of our stay by giving reccomendations about the best places in the area to go while being safe. We were able to join the hotel for a free “sipping hour” where complementary beer and wine were given between the hours of 6 pm and 9 pm. It was there that we meet another representative named Jeff who had an amazing drink selection and even more amazing conversation.
Our accommodations were also excellent. We stayed in one of the penthouse suites. This sweet featured a separate bedroom with a king bed, a bathroom with a huge waterfall shower and lighted mirror, and a living/dining area. The room was extremely spacious and clean. Great bed, good selection of tv channels, beautiful natural lighting in each room. I would highly recommend doing the upgraded room, it was worth it.
We enjoyed our stay and are looking into doing one of their seasonal packages for our next trip.

The Benson has an old world charm that actuallu belies modern and elegent rooms that are a pleasure to stay in. We stayed in a Junior Suite that was extremely comfortable with plenty of room. The olny downside was a very small bathroom, albeit elegent and well equipped. The hotel is positioned so that downtown is about a 3 minute walk away, the Pearl district is maybe 10 minutes away and Old Town about 15 minutes. Plenty of good coffee nearby and lots of eating options. For a city which is quite spread out, The Benson is very well loctaed. The hotel doesn't shy away from the fact it charges a $29 per day "Amenity Fee", but the Internet was very patchy and extremely slow which was not good enough given you are basically paying for it. But outside of that, I loved this hotel and was very happy selecting it.

We had truly an amazing experience @ the Benson hotel for 2 extraordinary
nights. The Baroque revival architecture is absolutely stunning and so well kept up for a 1912 built hotel. As you go through the classic revolving doors, it takes you back to the nostalgic era of glamor, exquisite taste, grandeur of stunning lobby. All clad in polished wood from floor to ceiling and intricate ceiling tiles is breathtaking. Checkin was seamless and the rooms were well appointed, very modern and tastefully done, and the bed was super comfortable we didn't want to get out of bed. HaHa !
The Benson is centrally located :- Powell bookstore, Pearl District, Old Town, Chinatown, varied restaurants/eateries just to name a few are all within 5-10 mins walk.
The service from front desk, to house keeping and the valet was impeccable. The staff and management takes great pride and willing to go above and beyond.
Last but not least, do not miss the historic marbled stairwell on the north-end of the hotel. Make sure to with card access, take elevator to the top floor, make a left and walk to end of hallway, and so through the stairway door, and viola the fascinating marbled stairwell awaits. Make your way on the well lit marbled stairs down to the first floor and explore most intriguing stories, photos set as a different theme per floor.
The Benson is indeed a true GEM in Portland.

A great hotel! All the spaces have an authentic 1900s feel to them, but the rooms are done up to today's standards with excellent bedding and amenities. The bathroom is on the smaller side, but is well done with high quality materials, and most importantly water pressure and flow is impressive.
When coming back to Portland I will very likely stay at the Benson again.

This is my fourth stay at the Benson Hotel in Portland, OR. It is a historic hotel in the heart of downtown Portland and about 3 blocks from Powell's Book Store. The holiday decorations in the lobby were absolutely beautiful. The small restaurant in the lobby area serves very good food and at fairly reasonable prices. The rooms are simply furnished in neutral tones; the TVs was quite large; and my room had a giant marble-tiled shower with a rain-head and hand-held shower heads. The staff is warm and accommodating. Very comfortable, very nice stay.

...still, it didn't quite meet my expectations.
My wife was traveling on business, and we planned for me to join her for the last couple days of the trip. When she told me she had booked "The Benson" based on rate and location, I looked it up here on Trip Advisor right away, and was pleasantly surprised to see the 4.5 Circle rating and Certificate of Excellence.
Which is not the same as 4.5 stars I was again reminded.
The Benson is ostensibly the sort of property my wife and I love – an older property, awash with wood and charm, but one that has been very thoroughly renovated and modernized. The first sign of good things to come at such a property is the lobby, and the Benson fits the bill. Large, with stately furniture, and absolutely drenched in wood. A lobby restaurant, with piano and a proper, mature bar. Bingo.
However, things get a bit “off message” once you get to the rooms themselves.
First, fairly large, but fairly sparsely furnished. I looked around the room and thought “there should be ore ‘stuff’ in here”. My wife agreed that it wasn’t just me, and that she had the same vibe as well.
Secondly, the furnishings themselves. Not Ikea-like, but not top of the line either. Functional, and not offensive in anyway, but not “nice”.
Third was the bathroom. Yes, refurbished. But care was not taken with every detail. Shoddy paint job on the door, water stains on the ceiling.
In summary, I just felt like the promise made by the 4.5 circle rating and the Certificate of Excellence was not kept. Yes, the property is nice. Nicer than your typical Holiday Inn or Ramada. But it just didn’t feel “luxurious” to me. And perhaps that is the difference between 4-Star and 5-Star.
To be clear, I would repeat, and most certainly would at the price point we paid.
But I was hoping for a “blown away” type experience, and that did not happen.

We stayed at the Benson for 2 nights and were staying in room 1232, which had a view towards the city. Check-in was easy with Bre at the front desk. Valet guys were friendly and always got our car within a few min.
The room itself is roomy, but the bathroom was small. We didn't had much counter space in the bathroom and had to put a couple of our toiletries on the TV desk.
Wifi was free but we had to reconnect our devices often, since it keeps disconnecting.
Since we stayed at the hotel during the pandemic, breakfast was grab'n'go with choices of cereal, yoghurt or oatmeal - that you can grab at the front desk each morning. We also received a $10 credit towards our room for small snacks and soda.
Pro: Location of the hotel, you can walk to many restaurants (if they were open). It was sad to see downtown Portland so empty and locked up, many stores and restaurants were still closed at the end of May 2021.
Cons: Overnight Valet parking is $42 for each night, you can get your car in and out during the day with the price, but still kinda steep. Amenity/ Resort Fee for each day is $30, even though you couldn't really use any amenitites during Covid - they should have stopped that Fee until everything is back to normal.
Otherwise, its a great hotel to stay at with friendly staff and great location!

Thank you for your review and feedback. We value your input and are pleased to hear you liked our hotel, as well as our staff and location. Thanks, too, for mentioning Bre. She will be happy to hear you appreciated the service she provided. With regard to our amenity fee, you will find that nearly all downtown boutique hotels in Portland charge an amenity fee. Even with the amenity fee The Benson is viewed as a great value by the majority of guests. On average our rates are less than competing national brand hotels. We offer a wide variety of amenities, including free wine or beer, complimentary appetizer during your stay, free access to local 24 Hour Fitness facility to augment our health club, free To Go breakfast for two, complimentary in-room water, complimentary upgraded high speed Wi-Fi, and more. Also, we encourage you to look for specials for parking on our website (www.bensonhotel.com), or call the hotel directly to speak with an agent about any parking deals. However, even at $42.00, our parking fees are competitively priced and lower than many downtown hotels. That fact notwithstanding, we are grateful you chose to stay with us and are sincerely appreciative of everything you have shared for others to see when considering options for accommodations in Portland. Hopefully someday you will visit us again. Best wishes for safe travels, in the meantime. Sincerely, George Schweitzer

We have stayed here once or twice before; this one was a "get away from home after months of COVID isolation" visit. We felt quite safe, with staff following the face-covering expectations and us declining cleaning of the room during our stay. The room was spacious and felt very clean, with good air conditioning. Solid Internet, good TV. Nice perks with a glass of wine in the bar each night. We didn't eat at the restaurant, El Gaucho, this visit as we preferred to seek out restaurants with outdoor seating. We had a very nice stay though. Great hotel. PS. Check out the historical photo exhibition in one of the stairwells!

This was the best hotel I’ve ever stayed at. The staff, especially the front desk were so friendly. They allowed me to check in early at no charge. On top of that, the lobby and room was so elegant and clean. The floors were literally squeaky clean. They did a great job with Covid protocols by requiring masks and maintaining social distancing.
The Tempur-Pedic bed was amazing! I did not want to leave my bed and I wanted to sleep in all day. Every morning, they provide a grab and go breakfast. Every evening, you are provided 2 complimentary alcoholic beverages from the Palm Court downstairs. Everyday, you are given $10 to spend at the snack bar. There is complimentary shoe shining as well.
The location was perfect. We were able to walk to multiple restaurants and shops, like the Powell Bookstore. Even though downtown Portland does have a homeless population issue, I felt very safe being at The Benson. The homeless people were a few blocks away.
The room came with a water heater for coffee or tea. There was also an umbrella in the room to borrow, as well as an iron and board. The mini fridge didn’t keep my drinks as cold as I’d prefer but it was fine!
We requested a companion betta fish and we loved him! He was so adorable and he inspired us to get one back home.
Valet is $40, but we were able to find overnight (12 hour) parking right across the street at a parking lot called PMC. We opted for this instead since it was much cheaper.
The next time I come to Portland, I will definitely be staying at the Benson again. I will also recommend it to everyone visiting!
