Palms is the first motel in a strip of seven motels you'll see along Interstate Avenue, heading north from the city of Portland (see my review of Palms for more info). The second motel, about three blocks past Palms, is the Economy Inn.

I've stayed at Palms three times and Economy Inn twice. Considering that Palms gives you a fantastic 100+ channel satellite TV system and very reliable wireless Internet access at room rates of $45 to $50, Economy Inn should be priced a bit lower in order to be competitive. Economy Inn does not have wireless Internet, and has only about 20 cable TV channels; the room quality and cleanliness is about the same as Palms; and they offer the same rates as Palms. I would expect that they'd offer a $5 to $10 lower rate to lure business from Palms but they don't. Perhaps I don't yet fully understand the mechanics of the Interstate Avenue motel system.

The first time I went to Economy Inn, I was just inquiring about their rates. A very nice gentleman with a shaved head was eager to rent me a room although I did not want to rent a room at that time. Economy Inn has about 20 rooms (compared to the Palms 50 or 60 rooms). When I came back about a week later and did want to rent a room, a young woman who I think is his wife seemed to not want to rent me a room and was a bit hostile. All businesses have the right to "refuse service to anyone" so I don't get the hostility. You can either send me away to spend my money at one of the other six Interstate Avenue motels, or be nice and rent me a room. Being hostile and renting me a room seems contradictory.

Economy Inn is a bit run down and old like Palms, has a refrigerator and microwave like Palms, can be a bit noisy at times like Palms. I've also stayed at the Viking Motel on Interstate and it's starting to look like these seven Interstate Avenue motels are nearly duplicates of each other. I plan on staying at the other four hotels this year and will post reviews.

One thing I liked about Economy Inn is that they asked me whether or not I needed housekeeping. I'm a very neat person and prefer not to be disturbed by housekeeping. So this is a nice feature Palms doesn't offer. When you check in you can tell them you don't need housekeeping.

One kind of annoying thing, however, is that they call you up at 10 am on your chekout date and ask you if you are "staying over or checking out." Most motels and hotels have an 11 am checkout time but Economy Inn's checkout time is 10:30. And they call you to remind you.

Most travelers who are used to spending around $100 per night for fancy places like the Marriott and Hilton won't like Economy Inn... but it's fairly clean and more importantly, I've never seen any bugs there or in Palms (cockroaches or bed bugs would be quite disturbing.) If you're travelling and need a sub-$50 hotel in Portland, I recommend Economy Inn. Or if you live in Portland and have an argument with your roommate or something, this is a good place to get away from them for awhile.

Portland is not a cheap town. We wanted stay 4 nights and tried to find something not too expensive.
This motel has many pros : the room is pretty big, it has TV and fridge and microwave. Big nice bed. Clean. Nice hosts. The Cons: small bathroom with no space to put your things. Poor and slow wifi signal. No laundry. Not really close to portland downtown...you'd need the car. Well...more than enough if you need a place to sleep and take a shower.

Tiniest bathroom w a shower only. Inexpensive. Close to the light rail. Sweet overlook park 3 blocks over. Just over the highway from a hopping shopping/eating/drinking neighborhood on Mississippi Ave. Free parking. NO WiFi though.

Stayed one night. Met friends on a night out with dinner and Karoke at Alibi and picking up a buddy next day at the airport . The woman was rude clipped short in her attitude. There weren’t but two or three cars and I did not get into the room until late. When I checked out the gentleman (probably her husband) was quite nice and pleasant. When my credit card bill arrived and they had charged me $100.00, the next day. I tried to call the motel. No answer. I was wary of giving her my credit card, and would have preferred to pay cash. She was not accommodating. I would have stayed there again as it was a cheap yet clean enough for an overnight stay. She is not professional ad it’s not The Benson, or a Holiday Inn Express or even Motel 6, it stinks of incense and curry and I would never return. I also was wary of my car and risking vandalism in the lot. Avoid this place. It is ghetto.

We drove into Portland 9:30pm and literally everything else was booked up. Big mistake.... the train kept running all night as if it was right inside your room. Could keep the creaky AC on to mask the terrible noise which was only muffled by the creaky floor. Terrible yucky place. Towel smelled like gasoline, ancient bathroom, zero counter space. Avoid!!!!!

We booked a smoking room (yuck) for $100 for that same night, which is expensive. The room of course had a smoky scent but I stopped noticing it quickly. The windows had been opened before we arrived, so perhaps that helped. It seemed clean enough. The door locked and the hot water worked fine. The man at the desk who checked us in and out was very personable and helpful. I like the area -- it's like two blocks away from a MAX train line, which has a kiosk where you can buy single or day passes (and other kinds of passes, probably.) We ate at Einstein Bagel a few blocks away and took a nice walk around the little neighborhood. I wasn't sure what we were getting ourselves into with a 1-star hotel, so I'm glad it was fine!

The room was clean for the most part. Unfortunately we were profiled again. Just like at the dunes the lady that checked us in I believe is a part owner or is owner through marriage. She was a bit cold to us when checking us in. And then when she went to check the room to make sure we didn't trash it or steal anything she had that very upset look that hotel managers have had with us before. The fact that they can't believe that we didn't do anything wrong. Yet e3 Ignoring the fact t That we were RESPECTFUL TO THE motel room and treated it like our home. Only stay there if it's your last resort.there WAS NO COOFFEE AND NO FRIDGE even with a Kings size bed

Good location in Portland. Our room was clean and comfortable. Our room appeared to have been recently remodeled. Very affordable price for what we received. Many of the other rooms were under renovation.

Great people and right next to train station. Helps a lot with the amount of money spent just on parking in Portland. The place is kept clean, and the beds are great size, at least for one person. I recommend if you plan on using the train.

The motel looks rather down from the outside, the rooms however are very nicely decorated in nice colors. The room was large, the bed very comfortable and there was a fridge. Good breakfast possibilities within walking distance, as well as public transport.
The bathroom was in contrast to the room very small and stuffy. There was neither a hair dryer nor an iron, which I am now used to in the USA as a standard.
All in all a good value for your money. Since we only spent one day in the city and the other at the Columbia River Gorge, an expensive city hotel would not pay for us. Portland has an unusually well-developed public transport, so we also liked the location of the motel good.
