The kindest proprietors - small family owned = consideration to the customer is a priority.

Even during COVID and an unexpected snow storm, they went above and beyond. It is a budget hotel so don’t expect luxurious items, but if you want clean, a very comfortable bed, a real coffee maker (that was the best), great water pressure, and a safe neighborhood, this is it.

Pluses: walking distance to great markets (New Seasons and Fred Meyer), terrific coffee house (Arbor Lodge Roasters), directly across the street public transportation (get the Transit app and purchase a Hop pass across the street or get the Hop app), walking distance to quaint downtown, post office, and small restaurants, wonderful staff, insulated windows kept a below thirty degree weather at bay

Minuses: WiFi didn’t always work on my phone but did on other devices - they worked hard to do all they could to make it work

Built in 1958, this is a genuine retro motel. The neighborhood location is excellent. despite being on a local highway, it was surprisingly quiet. A one- minute walk away is a great cafe (Fortuna) and across the street from there, an excellent market. Convenient Portland public transportation is right there if you don’t have a car.

The owner Hino is delightful. When I asked if my room was newly painted, she said it was done four years ago! There wasn’t a single scuff mark on the walls! She prides herself on keeping Viking immaculately clean, and it shows, thanks to her and her staff.

Room amenities: basic but sufficient. There were packets of shampoo and soap bars, but no “travel-size” conditioner or lotion. Bed was comfortable, towels were soft. There’s a microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker (coffee is supplied in a little container). no luggage rack, but a large desk had plenty of room to place a suitcase.

You cannot beat the economic value of this comfortable lodging in Portland!

Charming staff made us feel very welcome. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. Quite during the night. The AC kept the temperature at an OK level, but made quite a lot of noise. Location very good just a blokk from the tram stop so it was essay to get in to the city center (just $5 for an all day pass - a real bargain).

This place is truly the best kept motel secret in Portland. The same owner for more than thirty years, he takes personal pride in the rooms, the customers and making sure you have a wonderful stay in PDX. A patio area in the back sports a BBQ for customers to use and there's totally clean washer and dryer (coin operated) for convenience' sake. The maids show special attention to the rooms which are well-appointed and feature AC and cable TV with WiFi in every room. Great location right near the MAX and near local restaurants and grocery stores. For the money which is modest, you won't find a better place anywhere in North Portland. No wonder people keep coming back year after year! Five stars for this place!

We stayed at the Viking Motel for two nights in July, whilst on a road trip around WA/OR. It was brilliant - they happily let us park our car & trailer at the hotel (and let us leave it there for the morning on the day we checked out until we were ready to leave town), and were so friendly & helpful.

The room was very clean & tidy and had plenty of room for myself, my husband, and our two kids.

The Viking Hotel is a two-minute walk from one of the main MAX rail lines into town, we didn't need to use our car at all during our stay as the public transport was so very convenient & well priced. We caught trains & buses all over town and had many fabulous adventures!

There is a coin laundry and the office was more than happy to change my money into quarters (there's also laundry detergent for sale).

Will most definitely stay here again when we're next in town :)

People looking into this property need to see some reviews with more balance; yes this place has its pluses, but also very strong minuses - too many for me personally.

I was looking for a one-night thrifty bargain in Portland near I-5, and decided to risk this place based on the surprisingly low price and suspiciously glowing reviews. I didn't like it and I won't be back; nothing dire happened, its just very bare-bones and too worn-out and shabby.

Like most large cities these days, its flatly impossible to find a decent hotel room in Portland near I-5 with a rack-rate under $100.  Nice mid-range places that I used to stay in a few years back on business for maybe $65 are now $110.  And why not, since all the hotels in entire greater Portland metro area often book completely solid on summer weekends; I've seen this happen frequently over the years.

So consider that instead of something like $110 you are paying perhaps $54 here, and you are definitely getting half the room-quality for half the price.  My experience was somewhere between checking into the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel but without any charm, or perhaps, say, staying in a friend's grandmother's old home, where 40+ years ago they added a spartan bedroom and bath to the basement, furnished it from Goodwill, and haven't changed it since. Its extremely dated and in dire need of major renovation.

Big, spacious room with fridge and microwave, comfortable bed and the nicest owner I have ever met. He offered use of his freezer, brought me a vase for my flowers, and asked one of his family to help me with my car. A very pleasant stay while attending a workshop and so convenient to New Seasons Market and Deli. I would definitely stay there again and have already recommended The Viking to friends.

I stayed at Viking Motel for 3 weeks with 2 friend, so the 3 of us would share one room with 3 Kingsizebeds. The room had fridge, coffeemaschine, TV, wireless, mircowave, telefon, just all you need! The location of the Motel is just at the yellow "MAX" line (public transport) - which brings you downtown in no time and there is a "New Seasons" in 3 min walking distance so that grocery shopping is easy even if you have no car. If you have a car, there is always place to park on the Motels paking lodge. And if you stay as long as we did it is very convenient, that there is a washmaschine and a dryer for your laundrie in the Motels facility that you can use with coins (quarters)...
The owners are very nice people and can help you out with whatever your needs are...
Very recommandable!

Had a booking here for one night not knowing what it would be like. Hookers in the parking lot when I went to check in. When in and they wanted to make a copy of my ID and credit card. I advised them that they could not have a copy but could view it. They refused to allow me to check in. As I started to leave they relented, guess they would rather have had the money. I should have kept walking. First of all a bad area at night, OK by day horrible by night. The criminal element abounds here. Had to book here as major hotels were sold out but will never stay here again. Rude staff and dirty rooms with a strange smell in them. Avoid this place at all costs.

This place has wonderful prices, so immediately a traveler may assume that the motel falls down in cleanliness or amenities. They would be wrong in assuming that. The woman at check-in was friendly and talkative, and she was able to recommend some places to go eat at. Not only were there several recommended restaurants close to our motel, but there is a Street Car stop, a grocery store, and a thrift shop all walking distance from the motel. All in all, there are enough attractions close by to keep a traveler entertained. However, do not expect a fun experience if you plan on spending all day in the hotel room. The hotel is fine, but you get what you pay for. It's nothing special. It's very loud from traffic, and our room has a view of pipes. Overall, it's a clean place to put your head down at the end of the night, but don't expect a 5-star resort.

What constitutes a Family room?
Answer from BonzoVoyage
Portland, Oregon
Take the Red Line MAX to the City Center from the airport. Then transfer at Rose Quarter to the Yellow Line MAX headed towards Expo Center, and get off at Rosa Parks. I don't know how much a taxi would be, but honestly you should just take the max, the max stop is right next to the motel.
