This hotel met my need. I needed a place with cheap rate, parking space, and easy access to the city center. It satisfied all the needs. However, you would get what you would pay for. That being said, the amenities and cleanliness are not at the top level.

Considering this place is on the lower end of the price spectrum, I was very satisfied with the product that I received. The room was clean and cozy, though a bit outdated. There was a large desk for me to do work on. The bathroom was clean and functional. Water pressure was strong. Location was perfect for a trip to Portland—close to bus, tram and streetcar stops, also within walking distance to downtown and several food truck pods. One criticism I do have is that the sound proofing is not better. I can hear my neighbors’ TV and they were not watching it at an obscene level. And doors being slammed from next door and the lower level could’ve be felt inside my room. Also the room vibrated when large vehicles would pass by. I would definitely book here again in the future when I return to Portland.

My son and I took the Amtrak Empire Builder to Portland. I mention this because- this is a great hotel to stay at if you take the train. There is plenty of public transportation to get around and to the hotel. It is set away from the downtown area that seems a little sketchy. It was very clean and a nice location near the PSU campus.

I have not stayed in an Econolodge in some time, so I wasn't sure what to expect. This hotel was very clean, the staff was very kind- letting us check in a bit early to shower and clean up after 2 days on the train.

I really like how the floors are laminate not old dirty carpet. This hotel has had some upgrades and it shows.

Definitely recommend this to visitors of Portland and especially those taking the train who want a safe, clean nice stop over.

My husband and I have stayed here twice now, and it will always be "our home away from home" now. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but what really stands out with this Econolodge are the "inn-keepers". They welcomed us like family and provided for all our needs, and then some. It is rare to find a motel where one can be greeted with such kindness and warmth! This is a motel with HEART!

I read many great reviews on this hotel and since it was the only one within our price range in downtown, I decided to go for it. I wish I would have buckled and spent an extra $40 a night for a nicer place closer to the city center. At $120 a night, what a ripoff.

The ONLY good thing about this hotel was the location. Besides that, the "continental breakfast" consisted of sliced bread and bananas, they did not provide hair conditioner, and the rooms were disgusting and outdated.

Beyond that, they charge $10/day for parking, they charge $10/day for every extra person beyond 1 staying in your room, and they have an unsafe parking lot that sees a lot of activity throughout the night. My girlfriend and I were extremely upset to learn that we would have to pay an additional $45 on top of our room fee so we could park and pay the "extra person fee".

Overall, this ended up costing us about $150/night after all of the fees they tacked on. For that price, there were better options downtown. They fool people into staying at their hotel by making the cost low and then hitting you with fees--don't people see that? Spend your buck somewhere else.

If you believe that you're getting a fair deal, think again if my experience is any indication. I don't typically post negative comments on establishments I visit as every person may have their own objective reasons. In this case I believe that I need to WARN others that you may not be getting what you believe you paid for. In my case we ordered a double room, for me and my sister. After booking and paying upfront we were given a Queen bed, thinking it was an honest mistake we asked to be moved into a double room. The front desk insisted we pay an additional $35 per night, this for something we believed we already paid for. If you believe yourself to be getting a value in this establishment think again, you will be Nickle & Dimed at every turn.

Response from Rita P, General Manager at Econo Lodge City Center
Responded 28 Jan 2015
When booking your reservation through a third party and not directly with the Property or Choice Hotels.com we are sent your reservation info. through our PMS. The reservation that was sent to us showed you booked a room with one Queen size bed. Often when booking through hotwire or Priceline, you are not allowed a choice. There is an additional charge to upgrade to a different room type. Rollaways are avail. at a lower cost. The only other charge a guest may be charged is a Parking Fee, which is noted on our website. We have limited parking and parking passes of $10 are on a first come basis. There is street parking avail. adjacent to our motel. Like any motel/hotel, we do require a credit card being auth. for incidentals, or damages. We apologize for any inconvenience, and its been a pleasure having your daughter stay with us.

If all you are looking for is a clean and no frills place to stay close to Portland's transit and downtown area, this is definitely the place for you. Basic and simple is it. There are only twenty rooms in this small hotel which fill up very quickly. The standard amenities available are free wi-fi, tv, microwave, a fridge, and a bathroom almost equal in size to the room. The continental breakfast is also simple, but ample, providing juice, coffee, bread, bagels, condiments, and fresh fruit, along with trays to carry your food to your room. Run by pleasant staff, who are friendly, helpful, and willing to accommodate. We would have stayed more than one night had the hotel not been booked. We really appreciated the proximity to downtown Portland and being able to walk, albeit a number of blocks away, to places such as the library, Powell's books, the theater, etc. Right near Portland State University, the hotel has a block of fast food type vendors parked across the street catering to students in need of cheap food. We were most impressed with how clean and odor free we found our room. No lingering smells, no long dingy hallways, a spotless new carpet, decent bedding, and a bathroom that could sleep a twin size bed. I would not hesitate to recommend this facility to anyone looking for a simple and clean "base" from which to explore the wonderful town of Portland. If you're into second hand clothes or costumes, make sure to check out Portland's many thrift and vintage shops in town. They are amazing!

I can't say enough good things about this hotel! Our room was very clean and comfortable and quiet. From my first call to ask about the room & rates until I checked out, the managers (Rita and her husband) were friendly, helpful, and informative. I did not want to rent a car in Portland and this Econo Lodge is only 2 blocks from a Max stop so that made is very easy (and cheap) for us to get around to all the places we wanted to go. Because it was so quick and easy, a couple of days we went back to our hotel room in the afternoon for a quick nap before heading out again in the evening.
This Econo Lodge is located in a nice neighborhood with a variety of places to eat, near Portland State U, and also near a large Farmer's Market. Another big plus is right across the street are about a dozen of Portland's famous Food Carts!
This was my first trip to Portland but I plan to visit again and will be staying here again.

Would definitely recommend this property.
It is so spotlessly clean and very nicely presented. The bed was comfortable and furnishings very nice. The owners are very helpful and obliging. The breakfast of bagels, muffins and fruit with juice and tea and coffee was adequate and the area where the breakfast items are displayed, like the guest rooms, is spotlessly clean. Considering how close the property is to everything, it is amazingly quiet.

The hotel is around the corner from the buses, light rail and streetcar(tram) - all free, as the hotel is situated within the free ’downtown core’ zone. The free zone runs from the University, south of downtown through the Pearl District to NSW 23rd Avenue.

The other negative reviewers had a different experience than mine. I believe that there's confusion about which hotel is which: there's a Travellodge about 6 blocks away from this Econolodge, which is an older run-down motel, and some web sources incorrectly have the Econolodge's phone number listed for the Travellodge. The manager's comments are correct: this Econolodge is freshly remodeled, the rooms were clean with new bathrooms, carpeting and furniture. I had a non-smoking room: it was spotless. This is a great spot if you need a place to stay convenient to Portland State University. They have a small parking lot, while not being quite large enough for all the rooms, gives you a pretty good chance of having a spot to stash your car (Portland parking is expensive and a hassle).
