The staff make everyone feel so welcome, and they take the time to explain everything and suggest things to do on the island. They are so accommodating of food sensitivities, always willing to change menu items to meet my needs, or make something specially for me, and everything was delicious. The best place to stay on Lord Howe Island. They are also very environmentally aware, and have gone carbon neutral across the whole business.

Lord Howe Island is the only place I have visited that is actually more beautiful than the brochures and Pinetrees is the icing on the cake. The staff are wonderful. They have this amazing ability to make you feel like you’re the most important guest on the Island and the food is to die for! Absolutely 5⭐️

From the moment we arrived we felt supported to have the best holiday we could. The staff were friendly and attentive and happy to share local knowledge to help us plan our days. The food was amazing. Access to the lagoon was just across the road. Here there is the perfect spot to enjoy the sunset from the Pinetrees Beachhouse with bar and tables. All round fabulous holiday and place to stay.

We booked for our family of 7 including a baby, paid the deposit. Some weeks before check in, Lord Howe was under threat from Myrtle Rust. Most of the island was reported closed: highly toxic dangerous airborne chemicals were used to eradicate the outbreak, toxic and dangerous to small children, pregnant mothers etc. Pinetrees failed to advise us and then refused to refund us or to reschedule. Do you really want to support a family business who holds these values?

Response from Luke Hanson, Owner at Pinetrees Lodge
Responded 4 weeks ago
We’re sorry that RuthW33 cancelled her Pinetrees holiday and did not travel to Lord Howe Island. RuthW33 made her booking in June 2022, for a stay in May 2023. She paid a non-refundable deposit of $350 per person, less than 5% of the total cost of the package. All guests are aware, before booking, that the deposit is non-refundable. RuthW33’s final payment was due on 23 March, and we sent her a reminder on 8 March. On 14 March, we were notified, effective immediately, that the NSW Government had decided to close large areas of natural bush, including most walking tracks, on Lord Howe due to the risk of Myrtle Rust. We were told that the closure would be reviewed every week. We were not responsible for the decision to temporarily close the walking tracks on Lord Howe Island, a decision made by the NSW Government, or for the use of pesticides to treat Myrtle Rust. None of the sites affected by Myrtle Rust were at Pinetrees Lodge. Myrtle Rust is a serious plant disease which had the potential to impact many of the island’s iconic plants and some critically endangered ecological areas. The disease is highly infectious to plants, but does not affect people or animals. We were informed by the Lord Howe Island Board, which carried out the Myrtle Rust treatment, that fungicides were applied in targeted areas, in line with the label and approved concentrations for the treatment of Myrtle Rust. We were advised that all fungicides have been approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority for the treatment of Myrtle Rust. We were advised that the fungicide is rapidly absorbed by the plant and is safe to walk around once it has dried. The fungicides used on Lord Howe Island are readily available in retail stores and are also used to treat mildew and other rusts in backyard gardens and farmland. As the closure was being reviewed weekly, once notified, we began contacting guests in the week before travel to let them know about any restrictions that would apply during their stay. There was no change to the food, service and accommodation offered at Pinetrees. The beaches, as well as all the tours and activities in the settlement area remained open at all times. In our experience, this is where guests spend most of their time on holidays. Most guests who travelled during this time were gracious and understood the decision of the NSW Government to do everything possible to protect the island’s unique ecosystem. Once the NSW Government was satisfied that treatment was complete, the northern part of Lord Howe Island was open to walkers on 25 March. All walking tracks were open again by 31 March. RuthW33 was due to check-in on 9 May – five weeks after the island was re-opened. RuthW33 decided to cancel her booking in March before making her final payment. Our office helped her to put her flights in for refund (less Qantas’ cancellation charge of $99 per ticket). We advised RuthW33 that we were not able to refund her non-refundable deposit, as per the booking terms and conditions. We did not sell the accommodation and it was left vacant after RuthW33’s cancellation. We did not put RuthW33’s family at risk. This is an offensive suggestion. RuthW33’s family did not travel to Lord Howe Island because the booking was cancelled by her. We wish RuthW33 had not chosen to cancel her holiday. If she’d stayed with us, we think she would have had a wonderful holiday.

The rooms were modern and comfortable. The food was lovely and the staff were very personable (friendly) and came across as genuinely interested in us. Great location close to town, lagoon and beaches. I definitely recommend Pinetrees for anyone visiting Lord Howe.

We have waited 20 years to get to Lord Howe Island and thanks to our stay at Pinetrees Lodge, it was far more special than we had ever dreamed of. Our room was extremely comfortable and well equipped . Pinetrees Lodge is ideally located - across the road from the lagoon, close to tour and hire sheds, as well as the town centre and other places of interest . The lodge grounds are very peaceful, beautiful and relaxing. We found Pinetrees to be both luxurious and casual at the same time. Staff were professional , friendly and helpful, always smiling and each one provided amazing personal service. Every meal was out of this world - fresh, healthy and delicious. The presentation was outstanding too. The takeaway picnic lunches and BBQ packs delivered to your chosen location were a real treat. We loved sunset drinks on the deck of the Boat shed, with views across the lagoon to Mount Gower. Having no television, mobile phone reception or readily available internet service sealed the deal for the ultimate break. We have travelled extensively and Pinetrees Lodge is without a doubt our Number One destination. Cannot wait to get back there. Thank you to everyone at Pinetrees Lodge for the most amazing week away. No better way to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary.

This was my 3rd visit & fulfilled my wish to share Pinetrees & Lord Howe Island with children & grandchildren. My family now understand why I enthuse & have their own wishes now of return visits. After the 3rd day, my daughter said “I now get it Mum”! Pinetrees is a special place, relaxed vibe but very comfortable accommodation, exceptional staff & delicious food all in superb location. I can never get tired of sunsets at The Boatshed or views of Mt Gower.
