very good clean and comfortable hotel with excellent service and food. Small menu which changes daily meaning everything is fresh and cooked to a high standard. extensive wine list but we did drink them out of the Chablis but there were 8 of us.

This hotel is the perfect setting for a recharging of those wound down batteries. Set in the awe inspiring Borrowdale valley - beautiful ground teaming with red squiral, woodpeckers and delightful garden birds. Welcoming staff giving outstanding service in the beautiful bar and dining room = a chef providing 5* menus. Most of the rooms have been refurbished- groundfloor rooms have patios. One night is not enough - This was our fourth two night stay this year - we have tried the rest but will stick with the best

We had a first class experience staying at The Borrowdale Gates Hotel. Our room ‘The Cave’ was lovely , giving us beautiful views of Borrowdale and the flora and fauna. At breakfast we were excited to see red squirrel, woodpecker and various other species of birds. The food was first class and on my birthday the staff front of house and from the kitchen thoroughly spoilt me. Thank you all, we will be back! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

On the recommendation of friends who had stayed several times previously, we booked a room and three-course dinner for just one night. We were made very welcome, and given a free room upgrade. The room was very comfortable, with a view over the fields towards the hills. The dinner was outstanding - haute cuisine - and the service excellent.. We weren't able to explore the surroundings much, but there are lots of opportunities for hikes and excursions.

Just returned from a short November pre-Christmas break. This was our third visit this year and we are already booked for three visits 2023. The hotel was extremely welcoming, as were the incredible staff, who went out of their way to cater for our every need and to make our visit as pleasant as possible. Our room, Rogue Herries, had everything we needed, was extremely clean and comfortable. Food was exceptional and Chef's menus were extremely well balanced, plenty of choices and plates beautifully presented. We saw several guests taking photos of their meals. Although we were told there were still staff shortages (as is common in the hospitality trade at the moment), you would not have thought it, the staff were brilliant. Can highly recommend should you be intending to visit this area.

We love this hotel and visit as often as we can. The staff are friendly and professional, the food is just amazing (they have a separate vegetarian menu) and the updated décor is delightful. I would highly recommend.

We stayed 2 nights and really enjoyed our stay. It was explained to us upon arrival that there were some staffing shortages that they hoped to have sorted in the near future. But I honestly couldn’t say I would have noticed if it wasn’t mentioned, yes there was no turn down service but I cannot see why anyone would make a fuss about that, especially in these times. Our room was spotlessly clean and every time we were in the lounge or reception the staff were incredibly helpful and welcoming. The food and service in the restaurant were exceptional. We have travelled around the world and the food was up there amongst some of the best we have eaten. The location of the hotel is fantastic with a variety of walks right from the doorstep. We loved seeing the red squirrel in the garden. Can’t wait to return.

Had a brilliant weekend away in the lakes! The hotel was in a stunning location and was quiet and peaceful, with several good fells to hike nearby. All the staff were so welcoming and professional and made our stay feel special, especially with my wife pregnant, they really looked after us. They are short staffed due to the current labour crisis, but managed it really well and we weren’t let down in service at any point. The food is well worth the 2 rosettes, with every dish beautifully presented and a culinary treat. The rooms are a little dated but the hotel rooms are currently being refurbished and if the rooms are of the same standard as the rest of the hotel they will be fantastic! A special mention to the barman who was really friendly and enthusiastic, even if it did mean I drank a bit too much beer! We will definitely be coming back next year.
