Wonderful steak and stilton pie and very dog friendly (dogs are allowed in the bar and the garden). We have been several times and always enjoyed it. They have the usual menu and a blackboard for specials. The mackerel and greek salad was particularly good, eaten in the garden in the summer and the fish and chips is always great.

First visit for Sunday lunch with friends. Really enjoyed the food. Chips were excellent. Generous portions. Steak pies were excellent according to my friends. Intend to return. Quaint hotel next to the old castle ruins.

We stayed here for a winter weekend away. It was a very pleasant break. The staff were friendly and the food was very good. There were a few cobwebs around the beams, adding to the historic feel of the place.

We have just returned from our second stay at the Castle Inn. We stayed for 3 nights in Room 10. This is an old building full of character- don't expect modern minimalist decor. The room was clean and very comfy, the ensuite was also clean. We ate at the pub for 2 out of the 3 nights, Friday nights meal...

We visited the Castle Inn today hoping to repeat a fondly remembered visit in 2006. We arrived in good time for lunch, and ordered drinks and a meal for two on arrival. All went well until the food arrived (monkfish fritters and ribeye steak). Our food was placed on the table and I noticed that the 'chef' was watching me...

We are deeply saddened to hear of your experience within our pub. The duty chef completely agreed with your comments re toughness and unfortunately this wasn't conveyed to yourselves. We now have procedures in place, to hopefully assist us in these situations, as we do not get many complaints. We are extremely grateful that you have taken your time to...

We have just spent 3 nights at the Castle Inn (birthday weekend) 2 adults and 2 little dogs. What can I say.. We LOVE this inn. From the minute you arrive, you're welcomed with friendly faces and a beautiful bar and friendly chat. The bar has such an amazing charm. There is a snug if you want to take your...

A small, quiet village with a very busy pub! Stayed in Lydford for two nights and ate on both evenings in the The Castle Inn. The service and food were first rate and can see why it's so busy even midweek! I guess the gorge brings people into the village and possibly the very small "castle" but once you have...

Found this place yesterday having visited the Gorge, and what a lovely place it is. We arrived literally before last orders were being taken for food in the afternoon, but we weren't rushed into ordering anything and they accommodated us really well. The staff were all very pleasant and welcoming, and even our little dog was welcomed. Food was great,...

Wow what a little gem. After a lovely walk round the gorge we decided to stop here for lunch. The food is fantastic, homemade pate with toast very filling & beautiful, panfried halloumi with chilli jam stunning & very fresh. Main slow cooked belly pork (the best I've had in a long time) My partner had grilled gammon with pineapple...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Castle Inn is a traditional 16th-century inn situated in Lydford, on the Western slopes of Dartmoor National Park. Built in 1550, its plain pink exterior offers no clues as to what awaits you inside. It oozes with character from every nook and cranny. The lamp-lit bar with low, bowed ceilings, many curios, slate floors and an open fire, the lovely snug with high backed settles and the charming restaurant with beamed ceiling. There is a pretty garden to the back of the inn with more seating and views of the castle. Whether you fancy a pint of Tribute and a chat with the locals, a quick bite to eat or a full meal, the the Castle Inn offers wonderful food and drink in comfortable and relaxing surroundings. Children are very welcome as are dogs on leads. ... more   less
