We stayed here 1 night in september 2016. The hostel is really simple and basic, two buildings, one for the bedrooms and one for the common spaces. Rooms are quite dense, but clean, and the facilities are a bit old but correct and clean. The common rooms are nice and cosy, the kitchen is quite big and well equipped. The...

Over night stay here with 10 others. Mary Ann stayed late to meet us and show us the drying room, sleeping quarters etc and where to find our pre booked "wee breakfast ". The drying room was the best one we had encountered in 7 days cycling. The accommodation was suitable for us all. Lack of shower facilities was the only...

I stayed here once on a field trip with university and came back with a friend recently. We were in the dormitories, which have six bunk-beds each. It wasn't totally full, so I managed to get a bunk without any one on top of me (which was great!). The room was quiet, warm and the beds were comfy. The receptionist...

The hostel doesn't look much from the outside, but is warm and comfortable on the inside. Mary Anne couldn't have been more helpful and looked after us very well. The kitchen was well equipped and spacious enough.

The problem with Durness: it is such a beautiful and popular little town, with so many interesting features, but unfortunately it is quite difficult to find reasonably priced accommodation. This time around we spent a night at the Smoo Youth Hostel on our trip around the North Coast. The positives: a very friendly guy behind the receptiondesk. And a really...

SYHA hostel accommodated in two former army huts built during the 2nd world war. It’s remarkable that temporary buildings thrown up hastily 70 years ago as part of the defences along the north coast are still in good condition and quite serviceable in such a storm battered and wind swept location. A few minutes walk from Smoo cave. Pick up...

Stopped in whilst on a cycling trip. Nice and tidy with good facilities including option of getting clothes cleaned. Super friendly staff including the dog. If you're planning on using the hostel computer for anything serious though you might have difficulties, didn't work that well. Apart from that it's ace. Would use again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Durness Smoo Youth Hostel is surrounded by wild and spectacular landscape. There are mountains, sea cliffs, beaches and waterfalls. On a clear night the starry skies are incredible, made even better if you are fortunate enough to see the Northern Lights. Durness provides a refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and John Lennon himself holidayed here for many years. Our Durness Smoo Youth Hostel is relaxed and friendly and provides a simple base in which to explore the area on a budget. There are both multi-shared and private rooms, a well-equipped self-catering kitchen, drying room and cosy lounge which is heated by a coal-burning stove. Wi-Fi during your stay: We do our best to deliver a free Wi-Fi service but apologise that connectivity, particularly in our rural locations, can be intermittent due to the level of our current broadband provision along with high usage when the youth hostel is busy. Please be assured we are endeavouring to improve where we can. We thank you for your patience and understanding. ... more   less
