Detailed Reviews
We have traveled extensively throughout Mexico and have been off the beaten path. We arrived at the hotel when the pandemic was just starting and there were only 2 cases in all of Mexico. We ended up staying a week since the spread was going fast. We felt much safer there then moving to out next area. We felt so protected and cared for. Their early awareness and steps to keep food and public space clean and safe were impeccable.
Kevin who was new at the hotel and was from the US was so helpful. We looked to him as our lifeline every morning. As it turned out everyone was giving us updates and Gisele the owner and everyone that worked there were taking care of us in a very caring and concerned way.The cooks are amazing--fresh bread, innovative recipes, organic and delicious. We loved the beet burgers, quinoa tacos and huevos rancheros. The rooms are cozy with air conditioning and fans plus organic toiletries, recycling. The hotel is quiet even by 9pm.
It’s only a 5 min. walk to the mile long Beach. The water is clean with a sandy bottom. We spent all day at the south end where trees provided shade. We spent the entire time reading, swimming, and watching the pelicans dive for fish. We felt we were the only ones there. The town has a Bohemian feel which we loved. Latin American music in town plus amazing street on the street lined with great restaurant which were all excellent.
We will definitely return to San Francisco and stay at our favorite new place.

Excellent customer service. The employees go beyond their way to provide any needs. Room are small but cute. They prided with organic hand made soaps! The place was very clean, neat and had great food.
There was not a refrigerator in the room but they have filter water available 24/7.

At first, we were dismayed to not have dedicated hotel parking. But there were enough places to park on the street by the hotel. Once we got in our room, then we got happy! The bed and bedding were top notch. Towels were thick, and nice shampoo/conditioner was supplied. They provided a bottle of water for drinking and teeth brushing. Room decoration was very nice, and there were some entertaining books, too. No tv, but good internet. There were even 2 shots of tequila provided! Yum!
We ate breakfast in their open air restaurant, Buddha bowls were great. Excellent Covid protocols were in place.
But the brightest spot was Saul, at check-in. He was genuinely concerned that we enjoy our time in San Pancho, and gave us his WhatsApp number in case we needed anything. What exceptional customer service ! We will only stay here on our trips to the beach.

This hotel is more accurately described as Rooms Above a Restaurant.
There is a very popular restaurant on the premises which is open daily (except Tuesday?) for breakfast and lunch in the rear courtyard. Above that courtyard are many of the small hotel's rooms. On Friday, Saturday & Sunday evenings when dinner is served until 10 pm, it is incredibly noisy, even with ear plugs. Staff cleanup finishes between 11-11:30 with clattering dishes, banging, chatter and music. Then early in the morning the kitchen starts preparing for breakfast. Compared to all that racket, barking dogs and crowing roosters are a charming diversion!
But what also really takes the place down a couple of notches were the non-working safe in the room, a ceiling fan that makes a buzzing noise, a weak showerhead, and door hinges that may not have been lubricated in months or maybe years.
I would never stay here again, but breakfast or lunch in the courtyard is worthwhile. Also, staff do a great job of cleaning and Saul at the front desk is super helpful.

It is unclear what noise this guest was hearing, as his room was on the front side of the hotel, where it isn't possible to hear sound from our bistro which is on the back side of the hotel. (There are occasional celebrations in town which could have been the cause of his disturbance.) Dinners in our bistro are only during December through May, and only Friday-Sunday. Dinner service is complete at 10pm and our staff is careful to be quiet as they clean up. And...our rooms are checked prior to guest check-ins, for squeaky doors and any thing that might need service or detract from the overall customer experience. They are serviced prior to check-in.

We stayed here for one night after visiting Sayulita for a few days. We heard San Pancho was similar but smaller. Before we left Sayulita, we made sure that we could immediately check in that way we wouldn’t have to worry about our luggage. Online on Expedia it showed “check in time from 10:00am to 4:30pm,” so we thought, great! And got set to arrive right around 10.
When we got to the property there was a group at the front desk and the owner looked frazzled. We told her we were checking in and she told us we couldn’t check in til 3pm... frustrated because of the miscommunication on the webpage, they let us put our bags in the storage room until our room was ready.
We went to their restaurant and weren’t very pleased with the breakfast provided. The coffee tasted burnt and the food was okay at best. We were told to come back in another hour to see if our room would be ready early.
When we got back, we waited at reception and saw a room just off to the side of it. We thought it was an odd place for guests to stay, so we joked that it would be our room - it looked more like a show room to be honest. She then handed us the keys and told us that was the room we were staying in. We were shocked, but went with it anyway. I felt as though we didn’t have much privacy since our room was directly next to the front door of the business, the reception desk, and the Main Street.
All in all, it wasn’t a horrible experience. The room was clean, there was hot water for the shower, and it was a safe place to sleep. However, I can’t say that we would stay there again.

hi brandon, so sorry to hear about your experience. we strive for excellent service. we cannot predict the availability of a an early checkin. we are a small boutique hotel with 9 rooms. we strive to make you feel at home and offer you food from our truly organic, sustainable and local bistro organico. wow, burnt coffee sounds terrible. we have been awarded the best restaurant in the state of nayarit. perhaps we can make a better experience for when you come back. i am sorry your wishes didnt come true. its hard times for everyone. glad you felt safe and that you had a cozy time in our organic sheets. perhaps a taste of our small production tequila that we provide to our guests in your room might have made you feel happier. our policy states a 3pm checkin. make it a nice year and stay safe gisela marin proprieter

This is a difficult review due to the amazing staff and the lovely set up of the hotel with the little extras like a tequila taste in the room and nice soap etc. However I was extremely disappointed in the disconnection of management/owner and lack of understanding with my concern. The pool shown in fotos and “available” for hotel guests was 1.5 blocks from the hotel on a different street. Hotel staff needs to accompany you to let you in to the ABnB property, there are no lounge chairs or anything to sit on, there were two men there that had lounge chairs, not sure if the two chairs are always there and no wifi. It is not a comfortable environment and no “relaxing by the pool” . I was quite upset by the whole situation and was given a code for the pool and a wifi password but it was so uncomfortable there I could not stay. It would be impossible for staff to look after this for hotel guests and it should not be advertised as part of the hotel. The hotel is quite noisy due to the style and echos with voices coming up and down the stairs, there was a family with a child that blew a whistle until after 11pm Ugg. There is also a very popular restaurant directly below and to the left of the hotel. That night at 950 PM until after 10pm a Neighbour started drilling into the wall next to my room! Seriously. The person on the desk did go and speak with them and it did not happen again. I requested to speak to management and “it was not possible” I requested some kind of acknowledgement, maybe a discount or something but mostly wanted to be heard..nothing. Except from the excellent reception gentleman who tried his best and the other great staff. Hotel is clean, food and complementary fruit in the morning is excellent. Stay here if you like but do not expect a pool and do not expect any kind of response from management if you have any concerns. On my return in March I will not be bringing my family to this hotel and will not recommend to friends in Canada.

Response from Gisela Marin, Owner at Hotel Cielo Rojo
Responded 27 Nov 2023
This guest review is comprised primarily of two false claim. She says: 1) “Stay here if you like but do not expect a pool..." and 2) "do not expect any kind of response from management if you have any concerns.” The fact is: the hotel has a pool and the guest did receive a response from management about her concerns - just not a response she liked. The hotel has a beautiful pool which is 190 meters from the hotel’s front door, located on our sister property. This guest acknowledges this, but was unhappy about the distance. Like all guests, she was notified of this distance in the description of the property in our booking engine where it is prominently noted and where she booked her room and she was also notified of this fact in the confirmation email she received immediately after booking. She apparently didn’t read any of this, and yet this is her main complaint. (As if she wasn’t notified.) If you read our reviews, you will see that our guests value the seclusion and beauty of our pool. (As opposed to a pool surrounded by hotel rooms.) The walk from the hotel to our sister property is a very short walk. And there are six chaises at the property, as well as wifi access for all guests. We personally escort the guests to the pool as a courtesy. (Something that everyone but this guest seems to see for the courtesy it is.) It is a lovely and private space and our guests are well cared for there. (This guest was well attended to by our reception person and "other great staff" throughout her stay, as she herself stated in her review.) She also claims to not have received a response from management after communicating her concerns, when she actually did receive a response. And the response was that we would not give her the discount she requested. A discount she felt she deserved because of the distance of the pool. And which we did not feel was justified, as she’d received more than ample notice of the location of the pool. San Pancho indeed has noise, as is the case with most villages in Mexico. We suggest this guest consider a different location (perhaps an isolated island in the middle of the South Pacific) instead of returning to San Pancho in March.

This small, intimate hotel in the center of San Pancho feels like a more expensive boutique hotel. Our double rooms was relatively small but well-appointed with charming touches. The small breakfast included with the room was delicious and there were other good choices for a more substantial meal. The staff are friendly and helpful. All in all, a great experience!

Loved my visit to this hotel and loved walkable, relaxed San Pancho. Hotel staff took care of you but left you alone. I was leaving early every morning to go whale watching, so only tried 2 breakfasts, but they were great. Rooms are neat, clean, stylish, and comfy. The town's electricity went out one night, but the staff had provided a candle and matches at check-in, so I lay in the dark and enjoyed the quiet. The upper floors of the hotel are open to the outside, so book an interior room if some street noise bothers you. There are also a couple of local roosters who are on the job early, but you get used to their crowing and start to enjoy it.

My girlfriend and I happened to find this gem on our first day in San Francisco (San Pancho to locals). We could see the beautiful hidden garden restaurant from the street and were intrigued. It is a beautiful open to the sky patio garden restaurant. We were the only tourists that morning and the rest of the diners seemed to be expats that lived there.
We started with pecan pancakes that were not too sweet and were absolutely heavenly! The cappuccino was the very best I’ve ever had. Better than any I had in Italy too.
For the main course I got the spinach, mushroom and feta cheese omelette and it was out of this world. My girlfriend got the yogurt and fruit bowl that was so fresh.
The service was impeccable and our server, Sayul, was really nice. We made reservations to go back tomorrow night for dinner. It’s going to be epic. I will write another review for that experience.
When we asked our tour guide today what the best restaurants were. He immediately said Limbo, where he works. But then said the Hotel Cielo Rojo was the next best. We’ve tried both now and they are both exceptional.
My advice is to not leave San Pancho without having a meal at Hotel Cielo Rojo. I even told our waiter, Sayul, that it was one of the best meals I’ve ever had.

Love the style of this hotel. Unique, clever and local feeling. Very upscale in terms of their linens, soaps, etc. The staff is amazingly nice and helpful. And the food: where else can you find organic and tasty food in the area? Nowhere but at this hotels Bistro Organico! They make their own bread, yogurt, tortillas and more and more.

Yes. I work on San Pancho and can attest to this. I will say that the ways are a bit more challenging than Sayulita, just 5 minutes up the road.
Dear Trudy C.
If you want to reserve the shuttle services you just need to send us your flight information an our driver will wait for you out side of the arrival gate on the Puerto Vallarta Airport. The shuttle services cost you $145.00 usd round trip.
