We stayed at this hotel for a long weekend to be with our son during college parents weekend. The hotel is located very conveniently close to the college. The facility has all the amenities you would need at a hotel. The rooms are very spacious and well maintained, most importantly very clean. The only problem is that you need to book almost 11 months ahead of any special times such as parents weekend or graduation. The hotel also keeps a waiting list, but it is definitely a very long one and very hard to get. You are lucky if you can stay at this hotel.

I went for one night to attend my school reunion. I've stayed here many times before so realize the limitations. Unfortunately this town doesn't have another chain hotel or better competition. For some unknown reason they always say they're full, when I know that's not always true. There is a disconnect between the one or maybe two people behind the desk (who also have to run to serve coffee at the small bar area) and the actual rooms available that I saw online. My main complaint this time was the loudness of the young cleaning staff outside my room which lasted for nearly two hours. I asked the age of the girl who was complaining constantly and banging the doors next to mine and they said she was 15. Not sure about that since she's obviously not in school. It's expensive, no pool now and it doesn't have any competition unless you want to go to Burlington. They need better front desk people and also housekeeping staff that is attuned to the paying guests, who may need some peace and quiet. Not to mention there is no cleaning your room unless you require it. The final straw is that they messed up my points balance since I'm a "Silver Elite" which is a big joke. I'm not going to try to deal with calling to make my case.

A very quaint hotel with green and clean surroundings. The rooms are nice but the hotel has only a small Starbucks outlet for breakfast. One can, however, get breakfast across the road at McDonald's and other places. There is adequate car parking and the hotel is not too far from Downturn Middlebury.

(3.75 rating) To start off with a side note, I love the color scheme for this hotel, I am a bit biased, since red is my favorite color, but the golden yellow works well with it. It just gives the room and hotel more character than just plain neutral ones like white or grey. The white marble-looking flooring in some sections of the hallway (at least on the first floor) contrasting with sections of red carpet was a nice touch as well. Just my opinion though. Anyway, the lobby was very nice and welcoming, as well as the gentleman that checked me in. The lady that was there when I checked out was polite too. The mattress was very comfortable, and the room was decent itself. Just a few things I wanted to point out. The first main complaint I have is that there was a strange scent by the area where you first walk into the room. It wasn't overwhelming and I didn't notice it after awhile, but I would notice it for a bit again when I would come back in after leaving. In the bathroom, there were some dirty dark gray patches forming on the ceiling in 3 sections, so the ceilings could use some attention. The grout for the sink counter could also use a little fixing but this is not as big of a deal as the two previous things I think. The chair for the table in my room had quite a bit of wear and tear on the seat as well. There was also 2 pieces of (clear or grey?) tape on my room door, which I'm assuming was a quick fix, that will hopefully be gotten to eventually as well. It just didn't look professional. For the location, I would say the only issue I had was the moderate amount of noise you could hear from the main road. It wasn't very loud, but it was noticeable. I grew up by a highway, so I'm used to it, but for those that aren't or don't like it, it might be a little bothersome. I was on the first floor, on the side that was closest to the road though, so other rooms might be better off. Other than that, no major issues for me. There's a Walgreens next door that you can walk to, and a plaza with a grocery store across the street. It is very easy to get to everything else in Middlebury from here. There are also quite a few exit doors that were in convenient places to get to the parking lot. Not too many have them that convenient, which was a nice surprise. The pool was under maintenance during my stay, and I didn't get any food from the Bistro, but I would have tried it if I stayed longer. Overall I was satisfied with my stay, it's just that the bathroom could use some maintenance and I wasn't sure about where the smell when I first came in the room was from.

There was no running water from 9 am to 5 pm on the days we were staying at the hotel -- running water seems like an essential requirement for running a hotel. When the water was turned back on at night, it took a couple of hours for hot water to be available. The hotel front desk person said that these were long overdue repairs on the water system -- if that is the case, why not close the hotel why you are getting this situation fixed? We were offered no compensation for the water situation -- it was kind of like take it or leave it and who can search for another hotel after a long drive to Vermont? The room was very dated. I would not stay at this property again and would urge Marriott to inspect these properties to ensure they are up to Marriott standards. Interesting that this was the one Marriott hotel that I stayed at during my trip that did not send out a survey afterwards asking how my stay was.

Response from Karrie LaMere, General Manager at Courtyard Middlebury
Responded 11 Apr 2023
Pinktagpole, We certainly tried our best to make all of our guests aware of the hot water situation that we would be experiencing for a couple of days. There was a notice posted at the check-in desk, a copy of which all guests were given upon arrival, thus giving them ample time to re-arrange their schedules while here, or to choose to find lodging elsewhere. Also, the Night Auditor put a copy of that same letter under the door of each occupied room during the night. We had the water shut off during the hours of 9am guest time to get ready for their day and 5pm to ensure we had had water back on for the guest that wished to take an evening shower. After tuning the water back on it does take a bit for our hot water tanks to reach temperature due to the size to the building. Closing the hotel was not an option, however we reduced the Occupancy for the days the water was out. As for the Marriott Surveys there are randomly sent to our guest and we at the hotel level do never know who is receiving them.

Finally after 4-5 attempts we could book a room at this hotel. I believe it is the only hotel chain in Middlebury. We hear that you can book a room within 50 weeks but as of now their fall days are already booked, they even have a long waiting list. Just incredible! It is nice small hotel with a nice entrance. You have enough free parking space around the hotel. It is close to a shopping area. You are also close to restaurants in the town centre. The welcome to the hotel by the staff at the reception was very warm. The rooms are spacious and decorated as usual hotel atmosphere, nothing fancy. There is a fridge in the room. We enjoyed the stay and hopefully we will be able to come back. Would recommend if you can book it.

Hotel was clean. Staff was nice but the property is tired and in need of reservations. I never understand why Courtyard does not have free coffee in the morning but as a platinum member you do get vouchers that can cover coffee. The location is close to Middlebury College

The cost of our room was $275 and with that comes a certain set of expectations which were not met. The rooms are very dated, I found a 2-inch spider sharing the shower with me, there was no free breakfast {not even a cup of coffee!), the heating/air conditioner did not work properly, the hotel is very understaffed and during our check-out the elevator was out of order with someone stuck in it. We had to carry our luggage down the stairs from the 3rd floor. And because we were there for my granddaughter's baptism, we would have missed the entire event had we been in that elevator. The firetruck was pulling up just as we left. We are Mariott reward members and have never had an experience like this at any of their other properties. Middlebury is a beautiful town but has few hotel/lodging choices. How wonderful if Mariott would update this hotel and give its patrons and the town what they deserve.

This is a chain hotel which means there is nothing that makes it stand out. What I did enjoy was the breakfast of french toast with fresh strawberries. The lady serviing was friendly and nice to talk with. A family was eating breakfast with the kids in their pajamas. It made it feel homey. If they could have attractive pictures of Vermont scenes in the rooms and a few colorful pillows and a plush throw it would make the room a lot more comfortable

Repeat visitors to this location and are never disappointed, The team is welcoming and polite, always willing to assist or answer questions. The location is close to Middlebury with plenty of free parking. The property may not be the newest, but the responsiveness and genuine care exhibited by all the staff make for a very easy and pleasant stay. Did not experience any of the cleanliness concerns of some other reviewers. Grocery store right across the street adds another level of convenience. Not the "Vermont Inn experience" available in the area, but a very good option when visiting the area.
