Travellers' Choice
Glaramara is an independently owned hotel at the southern end of the Borrowdale Valley. Its location is particularly striking with commanding views of the local fells. It is ideal base for a walking holiday with easy (car-free) access to some of the best routes and well-known mountains in the Lake District, including England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike. It is ideally placed for a second night stop on the Coast to Coast Walk. We have twenty five double/twin en-suite rooms and eight single en-suite rooms. Facilities include a spacious residents lounge and bar each with log fires, a restaurant and a purpose built function-room known as the ‘Fell View Suite’. Wi-fi via fibre broadband is available for no additional charge, allowing you to keep connected for pleasure and/or business as well as entertained whenever you choose. Whilst we primarily welcome individual guests, families and small groups, our location, grounds and facilities make us a perfect venue for exclusive or non-exclusive event hire both for pleasure and business purposes. We have hosted many large groups, conferences, wedding receptions, family celebrations and other social occasions. We are ‘dog-friendly’ with a small number of rooms allocated for use, subject to conditions. Our bar is open to non-residents so if you are staying or living in the area please feel free to come in. Tea, coffee, snacks and light meals are, also, available to non-residents. We look forward to welcoming you.

What can I say, an absolutely wonderful stay from start to finish. Our room had 2 beautiful views, comfy bed, brilliant shower, and spotlessly clean. There was a small bar, lounge with those views again, a roaring fire and comfortable seating. Breakfast was a bugget, hot and cold, toast and porridge was made to order. Dinner was a revelation, 4 courses, top class restaurant standard food, absolutely delicious. However, for me the staff were the icing on the cake, very friendly, helpful and polite, they were wonderful. Hopefully we can get back in the future, dropping hints now to hubby!!

This out of the way spot was welcoming, the room was comfortable and roomier than many on our time on the Cumbria Way. The service was excellent. But mostly dinner was the best. None of us wanted a huge dinner, so they allowed us to pick a single course from the 4 course menu. Each of us had something delicious and unexpected. It felt much more like dining in a fine restaurant in a large city than in an out of the way hotel on the Cumbria Way. And Paula at the front desk was the best. The views were gorgeous.

I stayed here recently on my own for 5 nights to walk the surrounding fells. It would be hard for me to find fault with the Glaramara, location and views are superb as was the weather, 4 consecutive days with blue skies and no rain in the Borrowdale Valley must be a record!! The staff were very friendly and enthusiastic. Breakfast was all that you could ask for . The evening meal was excellent, I was a bit sceptical of there only being one serving time for dinner, 7.30, as that might not have suited me but in fact what happened was that it meant the restaurant was full so being on my own there was always people at an adjoining table to talk to and I met some lovely people, a few doing the Coast to Coast and a few just staying for a few days walking . In fact I have never met so many friendly people. I can thoroughly recommend this Hotel and I will definitely be staying here again myself.

I first stayed at Glaramara in September 1972, and wanted to revisit it 50 years on. Obviously the place has changed - but only for the better, and the location cannot be beaten. Lovely clean room, superb food, cheerful and prompt service, even when very busy. My friend and I are coming back to the area next June, so hope to factor in a couple of nights at Glaramara before our organised holiday at Buttermere. Well done!

The hotel is in a perfect location for walkers and only a short drive to Keswick. The staff were all great and really accommodating for us and our dog. One of the most noticeable things about this hotel is the quality and attention to detail. Nothing was bog standard bulk buy hotel stuff. Everything was more like what you would buy for your own home. A good kettle that boils quickly, individual artwork, high quality bathroom suites, quilted toilet roll etc… Room was really clean, equipped with a good dog bowl, dog towel and dog bed. Nice big comfy bed for the humans, smart tv and good WiFi connection. Nice views of the hills from the room too The food at dinner was of the highest quality! The beef shoulder and veg was one of the nicest meals I’ve ever had. Breakfast was laid back and all cooked perfectly. The bar/lounge area felt like a home from home with loads of really comfy chairs and sofas and a nice selection of whiskeys! We would definitely stay here again!

This hotel looks so lovely and is set back in wonderful grounds. The room was spacious and clean with a good bathroom and shower. The double bed was two single beds pushed together which wasn't so comfortable. The breakfast was spot on and it was in a lovely light room with great views. Can't wait to stay here again! We stayed in a hotel double the price of this and it wasn't half as good!

This hotel is lovely, the surroundings are stunning, fells on every side, the hotel is clean, the staff are very friendly and attentive, the food is lovely and plenty of it, the breakfast is help yourself cooked and also have cereals, fruit, yogurts etc, the evening meal menu is not extensive and is pre ordered, so at breakfast you will have the menu on your table to choose your evening meal, this may not suit all however there was plenty of it, it was good quality and it was a speedy service, I must also mention as gluten free myself, this was not a problem as a big percentage of what was on the menu was gluten free as standard, top marks for this, they did also offer packed lunches which could be pre ordered if you were planning on going out walking. If we were being ultra picky the rooms were quite small and the bed which was probably just a standard double was a problem for us being used to a king size bed, however in a response to my feedback from the hotel they acknowledges this and advised they do have plans to revamp the rooms. All in all though I woukd 100% recommend this hotel for a couples getaway.

Such a beautiful hotel, rooms immaculate and really well organised especially around housekeeping. Breakfast and packed lunches were great and of really good quality, but the dinners were the most incredible. Fantastic quality meat and fish, and great vegetarian options too. Puddings were delicious as were starters, and hand made chocolates with coffee were perfect! Owner and all staff were super friendly, helpful and approachable. Ideal base for walking - we were on an organised walking tour with this as our base but will definitely return solo too.

We loved this hotel, right at the centre of some fantastic walks, amazing views. The food was excellent, we had breakfast, great variety and a delicious cooked breakfast, we ate both nights in the hotel, food was excellent again. All staff were very friendly, we took our dog and he was given a bed, bowl and his own towel in the room. They have a drying room, so if you get wet on your walk you just leave your wet clothes in there to dry which I thought was a great idea. Packed lunches were supplied on request and looked really nice. The room was very tastefully decorated and very clean, I can't recommend this hotel enough for the location and the accommodation.

Stop on coast to coast walk. Excellent hotel in fabulous location with very friendly staff. Food very good. Only downside I can see is that the single sitting dinner means that everybody piles in at 7:30 and the noise of chat is simply staggering. Absolutely no point having background music and I had to use my noise cancelling earphones to get some peace. Might be worth getting someone to look at the acoustics.
