I checked in on the 27th of Jan 2020. It was my birthday. Guess what? The Staff there got a complimentary cake complete with candles for my birthday.
Also, after my first day of outing, we came back to our room fully and completely decorated just for my birthday. We were surprised and overjoyed!

Not only that, we got a free upgrade of room to a larger one and facing the lake at NO EXTRA cost from the second day onwards.
We stayed there for 4 nights.

What made our stay memorable was the excellent hospitality of the staff, especially Pak. Caban (the customer service manager) and Ms. Jessika of the front desk.

The temperature at the resort is what we are looking for. The food was great. Lots of greenery and flora all around the resort.

Transport from one point to another was a breeze as there is always the free transport to bring us around.

The room is spacious and well maintained. Very comfortable. There is Channel News Asia on the TV channel which I can keep tabs of news back home.

Overall, we had a very good experience during our entire stay.

We strongly recommend this place to anyone who wants to visit Lake Toba.

We hope to visit the resort again in the future.

Many Thanks to Pak Caban and Ms. Jessika.

Room Tip: If possible, choose a room with a lake facing. Best to go during the off-peak season.

Taman Simalem resort is on a mountain with panoramic view of lake toba.
The buffet breakfast is so very good with local dishes and local desserts.

It has some complimentary activities and we joined the jungle trekking with local batak guide, Kaban.

Kaban is a passionate, knowledgable, skilful guide & we learnt alot from him.
He showed us how the local people wash their hands in the jungle by rubbing finger ferns tog, add abit of water & voila! there is lather just like soap!
Highlight of my stay!

Taman Simalem was one of the more ‘unusual’ places I’ve ever stayed in. It’s a vast, sprawling, ginormous resort, much of which seems to hardly have been touched since it first opened over 20 years ago. You need to drive everywhere really, and the roads are all in a pretty poor state. The one to One Tree Hill is awful.

We didn’t appreciate when booking the layout of the resort, and that, if you are staying in a Waterfall Superior Room (as we were), it’s a 30 minute walk or 10 minute drive to the Tongging building (next to reception) for breakfast (for everything in fact) because the bar and restaurant in the Waterfall Lodge were closed. We definitely felt like we were in the naughty corner - we came mostly for the setting and the views of Lake Toba but our room didn’t even have natural light. The window overlooked an internal corridor. In a resort so vast, this seemed very strange to us and more than a bit disappointing. There’s a few villas nearby, but they were all empty, and quite a trek from the car park. I wouldn’t recommend staying anywhere other than the (pricey) Tongging rooms.

Obviously the setting, scale and views at Taman Simalem are what people come for, and it certainly delivers, but unfortunately Mother Nature had other ideas for us….the thick mist over the resort never cleared the whole time we were there.

Away from reception, the Tongging Building and the conference centre, the place was deserted. A number of things were closed. It felt strange. It desperately needs some work. So many things felt like they needed an uplift, or even basic maintenance, and it’s not a cheap place to stay in.

Good location with great view of lake Toba & Samosir Island.
Non informative flyer, many of closed venues, expensive rates, time of check in process, readiness of the room, the variance and taste of the food are should be improved...!!
We should wait to many time for very standard food for dinner package
You can’t hope the silence cause you can really hearing the sound outside your room

Very scenic resort over-looking Lake Toba. Lovely cool weather. Service from staff was great - friendly and helpful. Food also was very good. Our mountain view room was comfortable though a bit stuffy but made comfortable by a portable air-cooler. Bathroom/toilet however had a questionable design. Maintenance of some public areas need to be looked into. Unfortunately it is rather isolated with few supporting amenities and the long road to get there definitely need improvement. Good potential for further development.

I choose Taman Simalem Resort to stay as there's very good review. This is true and the place feel cooling. The staff there's friendly, attentive keep look out on anything in request.

In here I like to thanks Ms.Fitria for doing a great job upgrade my stay 4 days 3 nights to delux arranging transport from Airport to Hotel to and fro.

Thanks to Mr kaban for his great service and attentive towards us when my wife not feeling well. Arranging transport for us going around. Coordinating our breakfast to pack going back to Airport. Mr kaban walk us thru Jungle trek to Twin Waterfall, good job, great experience and explaining details envoiroment.

Our room hotel back door walk out can see Lake Toba. Espicially morning 6am you can take alot beautiful scenery moment photos for Sun rise.

There's a dipping pool (Need booking and pay for those not Premier Room) why not free for those stay at togging point? but is a waste not a swimming pools. If they can built a area whereby swimming pools facing Lake toba with warm water will be great. Massage area not active not sure anyone do booking. Bath room no Shower curtains when spray it on body splash all over the floor, no good if some older people may slip and fall. The breakfast buffet is good and included during your stay. When checkin time, the reception should ask whether we opts for dinner, because this the only restaurant.

One things turn off is the traffic congestion during going uphill to Taman Simalem Resort. This is not a reason for you to miss out having great experience for your stay in a nice cool relaxing Hotel.

The service was great, the views of Lake Toba were magnificent, the room was spacious and comfortable, opening up to Lake Toba and the surrounding mountains, and the weather was nice and cool. The entire resort was huge, and we had to be brought around by the hotel shuttle.

From the beginning of the reservation, Ms Fitra was patient in making the arrangements for the transport, tours and room upgrade.

Upon arrival at the hotel, Ms Peni greeted us with warm hospitality and attended to our every need almost instantly.

We were blessed with an excellent driver, Pak Eko, who picked us from the airport, and brought us around Lake Toba and vicinity for visits. He was a safe driver and made sure we were comfortable during the ride. The journey from the airport was long though.

We also joined the jungle trekking led by Pak Kaban. He shared with us the different trees and plants, and brought us to an amazing waterfall where he helped to take nice pictures for us. He was caring and made sure that none of us get injured too.

There was only 1 restaurant open during our visit. Breakfast was nice with different items every day. Of course the breakfast came with a view of Lake Toba which never ceased to impress. We even had steamboat in the evening.

We tried their massage twice, once in the massage room and once in the bedroom. The massage room was mediocre and nothing spa-like, but the massage by the therapists made up for it. The therapists were skilled and understood our needs.

Overall, I enjoyed myself tremendously.

The hotel is located on a hill, it's a very nice spot. We can see a beautiful Lake Toba view, but unfortunately not from our room. We requested a room on 2nd floor long when we book, but they didn't provide us the room as what we want.
Hotel has many facilities, good for families & kids. However there are still many things to improve as this is considered as a luxury hotel, such as the check in/out process could be faster, to improve the breakfast selection. Also we feel that the car that bring us from room to lobby was very slow.

Would suggest you hire a driver from Airport-resort as they provide free food and lodging for the private drivers too. Last time I went, i got a driver from Yoga Rental Car and his name was Hidayat. Very good driver and tour guide!
