The Historic Plains Hotel is a cultural landmark and society favorite of Presidents, movie stars and cattle barons going back more than 110 years. Our hotel is located in the heart of downtown Cheyenne and is surrounded by attractions that celebrate the rich Gilded Age legacy of the American frontier. A dozen restaurants, bars and entertainment venues located within 3-blocks of the hotel give life to the colors, textures, and natural materials of the Wyoming plains. Staying at The Historic Pains Hotel is a great way to experience the spirit of the west. “STEP in our DOORS - STEP Back in TIME”

An American classic. This hotel oozes history and is filled with period fixtures and fittings from a bygone age. It is magnificent. Ignore reviews from people who have no concept of history or soul. If you have the choice of staying here or anywhere else locally, stay here, it will stay in your memory forever. Sadly, the hotel is struggling and is up for sale. The current owner intended to turn it into apartments, but ran out of cash. This is double edged. It means it won’t be permanently lost to coming generations, but that is dependent upon someone with deep pockets wanting to keep it as a hotel. The chances are poor, I think, because Cheyenne is not a place to attract tourists in sufficient numbers. It makes me weep. It is also absurdly cheap….you won’t get a better bargain anywhere in North America

History should be preserved and the owners should be commended for attempting to keep this historic hotel going. I have stayed at other historic hotels and tempered my expectations. However, my stay was disappointing. I expected a majestic lobby as shown in the pictures and it was nice, but there were no services. Neither the restaurant nor bar were “leased” and the scaffolding inside the bar gave the air of the building falling into disrepair. Extra pillows in the closet were soiled and had no pillowcases, the blanket had holes, and the towels need upgraded. They were thin and rough. The window air unit struggled to keep the room cool and it was not a particularly hot day, being the end of October. Other reviews about road noise and ADA compliance are correct. On the plus side, our suite had both a full size and a mini frig. The sheets were clean and soft. On the whole, I would say, pass on this until there is improvement.

I stay in a lot of hotels. If it is clean, I’m happy. If it has character, I’m happier. The Historic Plains Hotel does have character, yes, but I still wouldn’t recommend it to anyone except for a quick walk through to see the artifacts. They are cool and show Cheyenne’s past. But the hotel is unacceptable. We had multiple rooms without working toilets (we were moved when the first one didn’t work), and we heard about other guests with rooms without running water. The rooms have not been cleaned. Some of the bathrooms have steps up, so they are not ADA accessible. The public bathrooms on the first and second floors are locked and there’s no one at the desk to give you a key to use those. The A/C doesn’t work and the windows don’t open. In the lobby, they have some concerns about safety in the neighborhood, so they use planters and trash cans to block doors, rather than locks or having a proactive attitude to improve circumstances with the unhoused population. The website says there are bathrooms, restaurants, a fitness center, daily housekeeping, etc. and none of these things were available when we were there. We tried to talk to management about this to no avail. If you want a working toilet, stay elsewhere. It’s a shame, because this could be a crowning glory for Cheyenne.

This is a great place to go ghost hunting. With so much history, we knew we could come in with our divining rods and get to business! It wasn't long before I was rolling on the floor speaking in tongues. Despite this, nobody came to bother us at 2 AM. Apparently there are a lot of unsolved mysteries here given all the history. Unfortunately we had to cut the session short due to spiritual attacks from the reptoids. It's a beautiful location in a great town with lots of art and history around. Very ethereal and green energy. Very reasonably priced. Also, they let me shill my business in the guestbook.

What a beautiful historic hotel! Like walking back into the turn of the LAST century when everything was built well and with pride. Artisan architecture, woodwork, and tile work abound. Western artwork on the walls and halls and nicknacks on display. Furnishing of the lobbies (made by someone famous) is a very comfortable place to rest, read, and visit. My room had modern TV, refrigerator, etc., and a comfortable bed. Nice view that overlooked the big downtown Cheyenne plaza. I only had one night there this trip, so I didn't check out the restaurant or bar. The staff were friendly and efficient. Alicia, Diane, and Rowan took the time to tell me about the building and it's history. You can tell they love it. I'm glad I didn't opt for a generic roadside hotel. I'll be back!

DON'T STAY HERE!! My husband and I were in town for Frontier Days, celebrating our anniversary. Because it was Frontier Days, the price for the room was $500. per night (we stayed 2 nights, no other hotel in town had any availability) We were ok with that at first. No where on the website did it mention that the restaurant was permanently closed, or that the bar shut down at 5p. DURING FRONTIER DAYS?!?! The website had fabulous photos of wining and dining right on the premises. Also, the hotel amenities listed several things that didn't seem to exist...we didn't get 'daily housekeeping'....all we needed was clean towels, but when we returned to the hotel Thursday evening we had none. Front Desk was closed (not open 24hrs as advertised) so we couldn't even get them then. The next morning my husband showered and dried off with a hand towel. He went to the front desk to get a towel for me but was told they had to request one be brought up to the room. The towel never arrived so I showered and dried off with a used/wet hand towel. Not pleasant. The bathroom was small, to be expected of course. However, it would have been nice to have someplace to set a makeup bag and hair products besides the toilet. There is plenty of room next to the sink for a small set of shelves. When you're in the shower, the shower curtain sucks into the shower and sticks to your legs. A simple shower curtain with magnets would help with that. The floor of our bathroom was extremely dirty...dirt and hair mopped into the corners and not cleaned out. Towels were stained and yellow. Our room looked nothing like the photos. We had a large entertainment center in the corner, blocking the window. The ceiling had acoustic spray that was falling off. You could still see the water damage that they 'attempted' to repair. I know some things are out of ones control. However, at $500. a night, one would expect better. Especially after seeing the website....and you can't blame Covid anymore!!! Our anniversary wasn't ruined but it sure could have been better. I emailed the General Manager, gm@theplainshotel.com, requesting at least half of our 2-night, $1000. stay. They weren't even professional enough to acknowledge the email, let alone try to resolve anything.

Don't stay here. This hotel is very run down and is need of some drastic updating The hotel lobby was not too bad but the rooms were terrible. The bathroom had missing tile and grout. The grout was moldy. There was a hole between the water spout and the tile. The sink was extremely old and worn. Where they had painted was splattered on the sink and dried. The air conditioning unit was old and could not keep up, thus the room was hot and stuffy. The staff had placed a sign saying the unit would freeze up if you turned it up too high which indicates it was not working correctly and that they are aware. You couldn't open the windows as they had installed glass in front of the window and secured it with nails. The carpet was old and stained. There was trash under the bed and under the window curtains. So we did notice another room that was in better shape then ours and explains the mixed reviews. Unfortunately that means we were put in one of their crappier rooms. The only positive was the location of the hotel and the staff were nice. Also the restaurant is not opened and thus there isn't breakfast.

We stayed here again (first stay 2021) and this hotel was on our route home. This historic hotel is a taste of our past and we need to be sure to help it stay open so everyone can “live in the past” for a night or 2. 👍👍👍 The last room (via phone call) was a king room. So we asked for them to reserve it. No credit card required to hold the room. That is amazing! 👍 We arrived and went to eat around the corner at “The Albany” (I will post a review on this historic restaurant). I felt that some upgrades had been put in place over the last 2 years. The lobby is original and there are tons of memorabilia (furniture, pictures, plaques, artwork) around the hotel to enjoy! Each room has an AC unit in the wall. So you don’t know if it’s turned on/up or needs turned on. Check you AC. The bed was very cushy and my husband loved it (I prefer firm). The size of our room was larger than most typical rooms. A large vanity with single sink, desk and chair, No refrigerator with a small freezer, the towels were small and had rough a rough texture (but they dry!), and a tv with remote and cable. No breakfast. The ice machine was broken. Both front desk clerks (AM & PM) we very friendly and helpful. They can provide you with local info as needed. The lobby doors lock at 9:30, but there is a separate door that allows the pass code for entry. If you would love some nostalgia, please give them your business! $125 total cost.

No restaurant or bar open and the employees do not know if they will be reopened. Tried to take a shower, turned it on it ran for a few seconds and then no water, it just quit. Called front desk was told to turn it off wait 20 minutes then try again and it if didn't work they'd move us to a different room. It was going on 9pm, we had drove all day and were tired, didn't want to change rooms.just wanted a shower and go to bed.
