My fiancee and I stayed at the Sanctuary Cottage for 2 nights in December 2021 as the first stop on our engagement-moon, and we couldn't have imagined anything more perfect.

When we first arrived, Kathleen greeted us warmly, walked us around the property, shared its history, and then gave us an overview of the area and suggestions for how to make the most of our time at Volcanoes National Park.

After a delicious dinner at nearby Kilauea Lodge, we came back to the cottage and soaked in the Japanese o'furo hot tub, surrounded by the sounds of rustling branches and swaying bamboo; it was incredibly relaxing and such a refreshing change of pace from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Upon waking the next morning, we enjoyed delicious fresh fruit, pastries, and some of the best coffee we've ever had, all courtesy of our gracious hosts. By daylight the sanctuary cottage was even more charming, nestled into lush greenery and with just enough room for a couple to feel cozy-but-not-cramped.

We spent our full day exploring Volcanoes National Park before dinner at The Rim and a long starlit night out to the flowing lava lake, all of which are just minutes away from Volcano Rainforest Retreat.

We were sad to leave the next morning but grateful for our wonderful hosts and for the beautiful sanctuary they shared with us. Peter, Kathleen, and Danyelle were always available and ensured that our stay was everything we could have hoped for. They even reached out to ship back a hoodie we accidentally left behind - at no extra cost.

We give Volcano Rainforest Retreat our highest possible recommendation and can't wait to return one day.

This place was absolutely fantastic! It was a very peaceful escape from the world. From the second we arrived, Peter & Kathleen, were amazing hosts showing us around their property and to all of the amenities they provide. Walking up to the little cottage yielded a very peaceful building with a great porch and a large room surrounded by large windows that was very clean, polished, and relaxing. The bed was very comfortable and the robes added a nice touch to use on your short walk to your private outdoor shower & hot tub. The cabin was surrounded by beautiful trees and foliage to provide maximum privacy. It was an incredibly peaceful, relaxing, and romantic place to stay that we would recommend highly to anyone.

A unique property. My wife and I stayed in the Guest Cottage. This cabin had a sleeping loft with a steep ascent ladder with broad carpeted steps which was not an access problem for we 66 year old's but could be for some people. The pitched roof meant standing bending over the bed when ambulating upstairs. There was an adequate room below for luggage storage and we left our belongings there which worked out well. The bed was very comfortable and the "Camp" atmosphere was fun for our two nights. Adequate bathroom, very clean, nice shower. Plenty of high-quality towels. Lots of nice touches, Kona coffee, jams, fruit, bagels, muffins, etc.

Our traveling friends stayed in the Sanctuary, a hexagonal small room with outside shower and 104 degree soaking tub. Again, a unique environment but very peaceful; we spent time visiting in that room as wall as in ours and both were very peaceful. Essentially no road noise (I did hear a car one time in the night!).

It was not inexpensive but seemed in line given the expense of quality lodging in Hawaii. There is no question that we would return to stay there again if in the area. Also, the local Thai restaurant is phenomenal...as good of Thai food as we'd had. The Thai proprietor has numerous family members helping her and I was told that she travels back to Thailand on an annual basis for the appropriate spices. Definitely delicious!

Safe Travels, Doconthemove

Again, Wow! what an amazingly detailed review! Thank you for taking the time to tell fellow travelers about your experience! It's so cool that you got to visit also in the Sanctuary Cottage when you were staying in the Guest Cottage! Thank you for noticing all the "nice touches" and showing so much appreciation for the environment. We love that we are tucked away back here in the rainforest with very little outside noise. For those looking to get away and find some peace and relax, we are definitely the place! Glad you found us-and also that you found the Thai restaurant to be pleasing and delicious! We welcome you back anytime.

My husband and I stayed at the Volcano Rainforest Retreat for two nights during our babymoon. We had a wonderful time! We were surrounded by the lush beautiful greenery of the property and felt completely transported to a true retreat experience. We loved and enjoyed the private outdoor soaking tub that was included in our accommodation. We felt peace and restored after our stay. Although it rained during our stay, we felt that it enhanced our experience of being in the rainforest. This property was exceptionally clean and sanitized and we felt safe with all of the COVID-19 safety regulations that were implemented at the time of our stay. Overall this location embodies a true sense of peace to its visitors.

Aloha! Thank you so much for taking your time to write about your experience here. We love hosting and sharing the magic and peace of Volcano with our guests and we are so glad you enjoyed it. The rain does enhance our guest's time here we have found. The sound on the roof, the way the water soaks into the plants and ground. Mather nature is such an inspiration. The time we are taking to ensure the cleanliness and safety of our cottages is so important to us. We want our guests to remain safe and secure while visiting. Our best regards and we hope to see you again soon! Kathleen and Peter

Decided on a change of pace and headed for the east side of the island. Fell in love with the volcano rainforest retreat. Exactly what it says. Chill... can’t wait to go back. Everything was perfect. Quiet, romantic, and secluded. We spent 2 nights here and never heard anything except birds and frogs.
All four cottages are unique. Peter and Kathleen really pay attention to detail and cleanliness, as well as being environmentally conscious. Truly a unique experience in the rainforest.

This was our first visit to Big Island and we chose this place to stay based on the reviews and its proximity to Volcano National Park. The reviews were on point, everything about the B&B was prefect, beautifully decorated, spacious, clean and the lovely sound of raindrop which gives you a calming feeling while you sleep. The breakfast provided by Peter and Kathleen every morning was amazing, loved the fresh tropical fruits and pastries. For groceries and restaurants you have to drive 20-30 mins to Hilo, there are excellent selection of places to eat in Hilo. This is a great place to stay if you are visiting big island, look no further.

We spent one night of our honeymoon at Volcano Rainforest Retreat and it was a truly unique experience!

Typically a two night stay is required but we happened to find a single night open between bookings for the night we needed. We stayed in the Sanctuary Cottage which is the smallest of the options on the property. It’s hexagon shaped with all glass walls.

Having noted ahead of time the small size I suggested to my husband we pack an overnight duffle for the stay rather than bringing our large rolling suitcases in. I highly recommend you take that approach as it was helpful to not have the rolling suitcase in the long gravel path to get to the room as well.

The Sanctuary Cottage definitely resembles glamping in some ways, with the shower outdoors in an adjacent structure and just a small “toilet room” in the cottage. The only sink is in the kitchen area, not near the toilet.

Beyond the unique bathroom set up the similarities to camping end! The bed was really comfortable with great, warm bedding. There’s a gas fireplace if needed and a fan was available if we got warm. A toaster oven and coffee pot were in the kitchen area and there was a tv with a selection of DVDs, though we never turned it on.

The cottage also had several flashlights and lanterns which were helpful when we returned from dinner, though with the lighted path they weren’t truly needed.

We quickly learned that rainforest birds and frogs are nocturnal and have loud conversations with each other all night long. The fan came in handy for us to drown out the nature sounds and there were earplugs on the bedside table as well, really showing the attention to detail Kathleen and Peter provide.

We also really appreciated their email in advance of our arrival with local restaurant suggestions - we went to O’Helo at their suggestion and it was excellent!

We had a great conversation with Peter when we checked in and Kathleen when we left.

All in all it was a lovely experience and one of many highlights to our time on the Big Island!

Step into a living work of art at the Volcano Rainforest Retreat. My husband and I had a magical time at this unique property. Nestled in the rainforest, this property was a perfect place to stay for three nights while exploring the Volcano and Volcano Village. The actual bungalow we stayed at was super clean, private and roomy. We felt safe with the covid precautions in place. The attention to detail was found in every angle, every view, around every corner. The property is so lush and green and the large windows are soooo clean we felt as if we were living in the jungle. The japanese soaking tub was a great way to start and end the day. I could NOT get enough of the views just within the confines of the cottage and grounds. A few great CDs, a few great movies on DVD and art from local vendors complete the space. We highly recommend the Volcano Rainforest Retreat.

We stayed at the VRR with Kathleen and Peter for 2 lovely and relaxing nights in May 2021. Kathleen told us everything we needed to know to make the most of our brief time in the area and at Volcanoes National Park. We stayed in the Sanctuary which has an incredible outdoor shower and bath - we really enjoyed relaxing in the tub with a glass of wine after a long hike. The house was very cozy and perfect for us (newlyweds), the floor to ceiling windows are incredible and you truly are right in the middle of the rainforest! We regretted not bringing rain jackets of some sort - oops. They provided a nice breakfast each morning of pastries, granola, fresh fruit, etc. We would absolutely stay here again!
