The hotel is amidst the part of San Fran that has not been hit by gentrification. The guards situated outside appear to hold non customers from wandering in from the outside. Once inside, you can tell it was beautiful in the day, but without maintenance, beauty fades. The hotel's history speaks to you through every nook and cranny of this hotel....

This is a review of the hotel, not its surroundings although people should be aware that the location is not the most savoury with many homeless people around although they did not approach us in any way. The hotel clearly has many of its original features with wood panelling, brassware and huge mirrors everywhere. The rooms are clean and provide...

My travel agent booked this hotel for me for 2 nights and although I was apprehensive about staying here some of the reviews about friendly staff and service made me feel better. However, this was not the case during my stay. The staff member that checked me in was rude and snide. I then complained about the non-existent 'free' wifi...

I stayed at this hotel for a total of 20 days on and off throughout 5 consecutive weeks. Check in was always fast and convenient and the staff was extremely friendly. I knew the building was older, as noted by the Historic Hotels designation, and I actually enjoyed the older style of the rooms. WiFi was a little slow, but...

I booked three rooms at this hotel several months in advance for 7 members of my family. On arrival the cool receptionist stated that they did not have 3 rooms in the same vicinity at the hotel. We were allocated 2 rooms near each other one of which was a smoking room for 3 of my sons, (we are a...

Good location, close to subway. Rooms are crying for a facelift. Dark & dreary. Just removing the dark heavy curtain in front of the window will make a huge difference. It would also be nice to have a kettle & coffee/tea in the room. Okay if you not going to spend much time in the room. Staff friendly and helpful....

We booked this hotel as part of a multi centre holiday via British Airways. It was fairly well situated. A minute or so from train station, and trolley and bus stops directly outside. The part of Market Street it is on, is not the best part. For about 2 blocks either way it seems to be the place for homeless...

I find myself staying here whenever I work in the financial district of San Francisco. For Bart access, it can't be beat as the tunnel is just steps away. It's kiddie-corner from the Orpheum theater and has some great restaurants nearby. As other travelers mentioned, it does have a high percentage of homeless folks often nearby but I find this...

While the downstairs of this historic hotel was quiet beautiful, I was disappointed with my room. Everything felt very worn down. Unfortunately the Burger King across the street played music all night, and our windows were thin. The staff was very pleasant though and the room as clean. The homeless situation there on Market Street seems to be getting quite...

I was quite double minded about my choice after going through some reviews regarding homeless people and BART station being very close to the hotel. BART being close was quite a convenience and ever big city has homeless people. I moved around by myself and I didnt feel an insecurity, neither did they try to scare me. The hotel staff...

Staying in SoMa

Neighbourhood Profile
SoMa
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighbourhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighbourhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
