I've spent a good time in this ancient building, today Opal, originally called Richelieu. It's the hotel where the famous italian architect Marcello Piacentini stayed in 1915, during the international expo. I read some bad reviews, but I found a clean hotel and the staff very friendly and helpful.

Piero: Thank you for taking the time to write about and rate your stay. As an independent hotel, guest comments can do two things for us: they can help us figure out what we need to do to improve and they can let people know what we are doing right. Always good to hear from a long time guest, and...

We spent 3 nights here and when booking I was a little unsure about the hotel and the neighborhood. I trusted the TA reviews and went ahead and booked it. We are glad we did. The Opal was clean, quiet and comfortable in a location that allowed us easy access to the city. The Muni bus system is fabulous and...

I stayed at this hotel after spending a day indulging in happiness with friends and colleagues. The staff was helpful and went out of its way to make my accommodations feel like home. Very comfortable bed and pillows. The windows were soundproof because I slept like a rock! Bonus continental breakfast.

The hotel had old world charm! The Opal was affordable and elegant. A lovely old building, well maintained. It was undergoing refurbishment and hence there was some noise but nothing too loud. The room was descent sized. It is not very far from Union Square. There were several bus stops right outside the hotel going in all directions so commute...

Amit: Thank you for taking the time to write about and rate your stay with us. Guest comments are one of the best ways we have to spread the word about The Opal but also let us know what we need to work on. Had to move from another hotel due to lack of heat in the previous hotel. Have to say, the reception and the management was very welcoming and friendly, rooms were great, there was some construction noise but overall this hotel I would recommend.

Absolute wonderful hotel! It's right by several bus stops and is a short ride to Fisherman's Wharf and AT&T Park. The front desk staff is amazing. They were super friendly, gave great food recommendations that were NOT chain restaurants, and helped arrange my shuttle to and from the airport. They are also very knowledgeable about the bus system and can...

San Francisco hotels are pricey... and some of the inexpensive ones you really don't want to be at. The Opal was affordable and elegant. A lovely old building, well maintained, comfortable, quiet, well-appointed rooms, a good bed. Coffee and tea in the lobby. Very basic complimentary breakfast, just a bit of something in your belly. My husband and I stayed here for 4 days in December 2016. First off, I should note-its actually handicap accessible (not the hotel that says they are-only three steps!)
