We are very happy you found us. Some travel writers have described us as the best kept secret in San Francisco. We hope we can continue to be discovered by travelers like you, who appreciate authenticity and a unique kind of hotel. Our Massage Chairs are brand new, look for them on both floors. We hope you come back when...

I had to book a room last minute for a conference. Only room I could find under $200 was San Remo. It is a great location, staff were extremely helpful. Room and shared spaces are old and tight (narrow hallways, small rooms) but clean, comfortable and very satisfactory. It would be nice to have tea and coffee before 8 am...

We stayed for 3 nights at San Remo. First impression, the hotel is really unique. There are many intricate knick knacks, vintage furnitures and lots of brochures relevant for tourists. Check in was quick and fuss free. The staff is friendly and helpful. Our room is at level 3 and it is really small. The bed took up 2/3 of...

We enjoy hearing from our guests. We are glad that you found our staff to be friendly and helpful. Our hotel has maintained its original layout and size, adapting to the modern traveler as much as we can, while keeping its historic charm and affordability. You can always ask for help at the Front Desk, if you need help with...

San Remo is absolutely charming! I can't imagine a better location, rooms are quaint and cozy, very reasonably priced, spotless restrooms & showers down the hall and we never had to wait, excellent staff, daily maid service, beautiful old building, interesting photos on the walls, and a kind and friendly owner. Maybe it's not for everyone, for whatever reasons they...

Thank you for your review. We want our guests to leave their hearts in San Francisco and at the San Remo Hotel too. The Penthouse can give you, for the duration of your stay, the experience of living in North Beach. You can enjoy an afternoon tea or drinks in your own little terrace overlooking Coit Tower and the Bay....

My stay at the San Remo was amazing! The location was perfect: a quiet neighborhood that is definitely within walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf, Ghirardelli Square and a plethora of restaurants (including the one below the hotel where San Remo guests receive a 15% discount!). Aside from the location, the staff were always amazing, helpful, courteous and incredibly friendly. The...

Hi Lemonfin, thanks for taking the time to write us a review! The new Trader Joes is a nice addition to our neighborhood, unique selections and good prices, great for picking up some late night snacks. It's kitty-corner from the North Point Mall with a Safeway, Walgreens, 24 Hour Fitness Center and a plethora of other useful stores and service...

Just the coolest decor! We stayed on the first floor, so didn't get the benefit of the sky-lit upper floors. If you don't mind taking your bag up the stairs, (really, you only do it once when you arrive, & once when you leave), the top floor has a great ambience. No smell as far as we can remember, The...

Rooms 1, 2, or 31 are the best rooms. First, they are on the second floor (there aren't any rooms on the first floor and you don't want to lug your stuff up the steps to the 3rd floor). Second, these three have a sink in each (so you don't have to use the public sink in the hall. Third,...

Thanks for your Three star review, yes we are not everyone's cup of tea, we make it clear to everyone who calls that the San Remo is a1906 European style historic hotel with shared baths down the hall. They are private though, and not open to the "public", but they are in no way akin to porta-potties. There are many...

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We are a family-owned historic boutique pension-style hotel located in North Beach, one of San Francisco's oldest and most popular tourist destinations, and only a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1906, our hotel maintains an atmosphere of Old-World charm and ambiance with specially selected antique furnishings - no two rooms are alike. The walls of the hotel are filled with a collection of memorabilia and history. Our style is simplicity and sanctuary - there are no room telephones, no televisions, and on the order of European pensions, shared baths which are meticulously cleaned daily, and are private when in use, but for all guests to use. Our rooms are cozy and small, our prices are proportional. Our staff is available while our Front Desk is open to help you find anything your heart desires. A truly unique, non-standardized hotel experience. ... more   less
