Definitely has potential, but not at all what the website promises. We stayed in the Ralph Waldo Emerson Suite which had a beautiful four poster bed, fireplace and vaulted ceiling. The large jetted tub was a nice addition. Unfortunately the bed was uncomfortably soft, the mattress pad and some of the pillowcases were older, worn and pilling and the bed frame itself though impressive to look at, felt as though it would at any moment crash to the floor. (You’ll want to lay absolutely still to avoid any worrisome noise, shifting and movement of that impressive bed frame.) Thick towels, hand towels and wash cloths were available for use, but unfortunately not replaced as expected. Our used coffee cups and wine glasses were also left in our room. (Was it the COVID restrictions that kept our room untouched by housekeeping?) Our two 3-course breakfasts were as promised, very good though the second day, it appeared the inn was understaffed and a one-man-show. The property itself is charming and the landscaping will likely be beautiful this spring and summer. Nevertheless, this BnB is definitely overpriced and oversold.

We had a fabulous time staying at the WhiteGate Inn over a recent long weekend. The home is beautiful and the gardens are absolutely breath-taking. I had the chance to meet Ralph, the master gardening and creator of the gardens and he was so gracious. The gardens alone are a reason to stay here, but our cottage was equally charming. We stayed in the Ralph Waldo Emerson cottage with a cozy fireplace and furnishings and a luxurious bathroom, all very clean. The breakfast was very decadent too and the main housing was just beautiful to tour. Thank you for an unforgettable weekend. I highly recommend this B&B!

Not even close to a 4 star rating. Rundown is being polite. Our room was not what we expected. The bed was so uncomfortable and squeaky that any movement woke you up. The bathroom was fine but the rest was sub par. When I’m on a getaway I don’t want to have a set time for breakfast and I don’t want someone banging on the doors yelling housekeeping at 8:30 in the morning. Extremely overpriced. There are much better values in Asheville. We left a day early even though there’s no refund policy. Two nights was more than enough.

We stayed at this establishment 21st to 25th September in the Carl Sandburg room. Although spacious it was definitely NOT a 4 star and was not clean. The shower pressure was lacking and the TV was from the 20th Century which was very frustrating to use with the DVD player. Indeed staff had to play with 3 remotes to enable us to use the TV. Even saying don't use this remote! Why was that remote in the room. The breakfasts were a calorie and carb overload. (Pies and pastry galore). Our last breakfast was a weird pastry with strawberry icing and the piece de resistance was unappetizing biscuit and gravy which was inedible. Lastly, the entry and exit procedures was amateurish. No key to access the front door and therefore one had to use the rear entrance which had a fiddly door code. However as another reviewer stated, the business is for sale and ensuring a better key system if far from the owners thoughts.

Response from Frank Salvo, Owner at 1889 WhiteGate Inn & Cottage
Responded 29 Sep 2020
Thank you for your response regarding our Inn, We take every complaint very seriously and they will be addressed with all parties involved. We do not allow our guest to use the front door for safety reasons and specifically tell each guest about our side entrance with a special code to enter. Again, Thank you for bringing all concerns to our attention.

Every Bed and Breakfast is different. This one is very overpriced for what it is, and I can not recommend it to anyone. Also note that the website is old, and still claims that the inn is a "AAA 4-Diamond property." This is not true...the property was formally designated as 4-Diamond by AAA but it no longer has that designation. While the Google listing says "4-star," I was not able to identify ANY relevant designation (whether it be Forbes Star or AAA Diamond) for this property. I'll break this review into relevant sections: first "bed" and then "breakfast." Bed: my partner and I stayed in the Maya Angelou suite from September 23-26, 2020. The photos on the Whitegate inn website are outdated--to be clear, this room is effectively a 2- or 3-star hotel room (which we did not expect from a B&B) and is NOT located in the main house. Even though this room was labelled "non-smoking," it smelled like cigarette smoke. The shower was new and very nice and the bed was comfortable (although very creaky), but the cable remote did not work and the microwave was broken. There was a crack in the bathroom ceiling with evidence of fresh water damage on one end. The plumbing from the room above is VERY loud, and will likely wake light sleepers. Breakfasts: We ate 3 meals in their dining room, and I will provide details of each one. There were water and coffee services at each meal served by staff members of the inn. There are two breakfast services to allow for physical distancing: one at 8:30AM and one at 9:15. We chose the 9:15 breakfast, but there was a snag on the third day which I will elaborate on in a moment. The first morning, they served cinnamon apples, tomato pie, and an iced croissant. My slice of tomato pie was excellent, but then I tried my partner's and that one was terrible! I think they came from two different pies. The second morning, breakfast was melon balls, grapes, and a scoop of mascarpone with lemon and lime zest. The mascarpone was out-of-place and freezing cold compared to the fruit. The entree was biscuits and gravy, but the biscuits were rock-hard on the outside and nearly raw on the inside. Very strange. I could not identify the dessert item for this meal...it was a yellow pastry with a strawberry cream poured on top and garnished with more lemon zest. And finally this morning breakfast did not begin until 9:25. The fruits were pineapples, peaches, and grapes which were coated in nutmeg and served in a bowl of cottage cheese. This was a strange choice. The entrees were eggs benedict with overcooked salmon on a store-bought pre-packaged english muffin with mashed potatoes (?) on the side. The dessert was a bread pudding with a vanilla creme fraiche which was very good. We found out while we were staying here that the inn is currently up for sale, which may explain the lack of effort. We only interacted with junior staff...there were no managers or owners to be found. Please choose a different B&B when you say in Asheville.
