First the good. The views on the terrace are incredible. Now the rest of the story. It is not so much old world as old. We have stayed here preciously and feel it has deteriorated. There were no wash cloths in the room the first night despite calls to the front desk and the bedding is uncomfortable. I want to like it because we enjoy older hotels and the lodges in the nationals parks - however it is just not a good value. There are better places to stay for $300+ per night plus $30 per day resort fee and $18 per day for self parking. We will not be back, there are just too many nicer options for the money.

Hotel's Favourite
Our second visit did not disappoint. We selected a mountain view room in one of the new wings having stayed first in the original section. The room was spacious and well appointed. The room was very clean and the view over the golf course, downtown Ashville, and the mountains beyond were exceptional. Great sunsets and ever changing scenery colored by the sun and clouds. It snowed over night and the landscape was very beautiful. The Grand Hall has comfortable seating to enjoy a libation in front of the massive fireplaces. Of note one is gas the other is a real log burning fireplace. Upon check-in you do not have to leave. There are a number of restaurants, a market place, and shops. We spent two days at the spa (reservations required as is a service. Day passes are available to registered guest Monday-Thursday). Over our two stays we have indulged in their pedicure, facial massage, and a couples massage. All three were amazing. Our next trip will be planned for the fall to see the colors of the mountains.

The drive from the highway to the hotel was interesting because you go through a subdivision. We saw a bear crossing sign and thought they were kidding until we talked to the staff. The hotel is beautiful with its huge stone fireplaces and spectacular views. We were in the main building on the third floor and there was a large atrium seating area called the Palm Court on this level. The elevators were the old style with an operator and actually located INSIDE the huge fireplaces! The rooms were older and furnished with older furnishings except for the king size bed, and part of the carpet on the far side of the bed apparently had not been swept because there were pieces of lint on it. I guess they were trying to keep everything as original as possible, but the tub was very old and had some glass shower doors rigged on top of it. I am short and it was tall, so it was difficult to get in and out of. The public areas and the view more than made up for any shortcomings of the room. We came here to check off a bucket list item, and it was so worth it!

Spent a nice midweek stay at this Grand Dame nestled above Asheville. This was our first visit and we were immediately taken with the view as you enter the property. It is imposing for sure. It is also a very busy property with people and cars coming and going. The front has a large porch area with rocking chairs so you can sit and enjoy the hustle and bustle. The grand front lobby has plenty of sitting and plenty of people. You are immediate drawn to the back doors and the views from the back decks of the valley golf course and the waterfall in front of the Spa. It is a sight to behold. Note: the property is open to all so you'll see and hear a lot of tours being conducted for visitors. Check in is at 4pm and I got the feel that early check in is not welcomed at all. You can call at the front desk, they will check you in however your room most likely won't be ready until 4. They will text you when you can come and pick up your key. That gives you some time to walk around and acquaint yourself with the shops and eateries, the sports complex, etc. Our room was a standard room in the main lodge (room 555). True to our luck it was the room immediately by the elevator. On the plus side, the rooms re well insulated from the noise and other than the occasional loud guest and welcome/bye bye as people entered and departed the elevator (manned by an attendant, only two riders at a time), we heard very little noise. The room is of good size, with a king bed, window overlooking the front of the lodge, four nice, soft pillows, plenty of storage (closet, built in draws, separate closet with ironing board, a good size bathroom, large TV with a very quiet mini-fridge in cabinet below, two armed chairs (a bit on the slender size for sitting) and desk. Two robes can be found in the closet (with a safe and key). Bathroom had some signs of mold behind the sink faucets and the glass door to the tub/shower combo. The rubber molding for the shower glass opening was also coming off. Caution for those with some mobility issues, you may have trouble climbing into and out of the tub (it's deep and no real handles to steady yourself getting in and out). The shower had nice, constant pressure and an adjustable shower head. We were not able to redirect the water from shower to tub, so not sure if that was an issue with us or the facet. Had four nice and thick towels, a hair dryer and shampoo/soap/conditioner accessories. We did not eat at the lodge (couldn't get reservations last minute). They offered us a free coffee from the marketplace but didn't use those coupons either. Parking is at a premium if you self park (added charge per day). We ended up having to park near the sports complex and walk (hike) to up hill to the lodge each day. They do offer valet parking which takes most of the nearby spaces. Didn't appear they offered on property shuttle to the parking areas. Overall was nice to spend our special anniversary occasion (not recognized in any way by the hotel) at the Lodge. I did use their onsite flower shop to order an arrangement which was delivered as promised.

This was our first visit to Asheville, and we wanted to stay at the Grove Park Inn. I must say it took my breath away when I first saw it. My husband and I are history lovers and the nostalgic feel when you walked through the door was truly amazing. I must say I read some of the other reviews that completely missed the opportunity to appreciate the craftsmanship of the workers and designers from over a century ago. Yes, rooms are not 21st century design in many aspects, but that’s not why we chose Grove Park Inn. It was to capture the feel and romance of days gone by... I honestly don’t know what the newer wings look like, but if you are looking for something unique that you will not find anywhere else this is the place. We will definitely return to create more amazing memories. The staff were impeccable, and we were gifted with a bottle of wine and chocolates as we were celebrating our anniversary. I have a “thing” about water pressure, and it was wonderful. We didn’t try the onsite restaurants due to our short stay, but we will in the future. We were also going to make a spa appointment, but it was booked. The one thing I would advise is to make reservations weeks out, so you can enjoy all the resort has to offer.
