Our main criteria for accommodation for our five night stay was to have a private bathroom and be no more than ten mins via subway to all the major sights. I stumbled across Dexter House Hotel and at $240 for a five night stay with a private bathroom, we thought we would take a risk. We were however unsure what... More

Of course it's a hostel so don't expect great service or comfort. I dreaded going there since I had read so many bad comments about it. But come on, for $25/night, you can't be too harsh. The overall cleanliness is ok (except for the bathrooms that are hardly cleaned). The rooms are pretty spacious with usually a fridge or TV... More

Due to a monumental cock up by the Broadway Hotel and Hostel, I was forced to spend a night at the Dexter House Hotel last year. Before I went, a friend who used to work for STA travel said "Whatever you do, don't stay at Dexter House'. Unfortunately, I had no Day weekend. choice as every other mid-level hotel room... More

I had read about this hostel on TripAdvisor and despite some really shocking reviews, I was willing to give it a go for the sake of some cheap accommodation in an expensive city. I didn't expect much so thought we'd be ok. However, on arrival, having travelled for 12 hours on a train from Toronto, we encountered easily the rudest... More

from the outside the place looks quite nice, but tis a facade: this place was absolutley disgusting. The rooms were dirty and very bare, the beds didnt look very clean and weren't comfortable, which meant i had hardly any sleep. The door to the room wouldnt open, and the place smelt. There was broken glass in the stairway. You had... More

This is the worst, dirtyest place ever. Was unsafe there, beds were not made, evrything was dirty. People were living illegally in this dump. The staff were unhelpfull, doores did not unlockwe had a hole in our window, where we could hear evrything that happened put side, we had a rusty uncleaned bathroom where we found blood in the bath.... I stayed here on my first ever overseas trip. I'd read alot about how expensive it was to stay in New York, and viewed some reviews of Dexter before arriving. I expected the worst. We got a (double) bed (were expecting a twin so had to share with my friend) in a pretty small room (the bed was against the... More

I stayed in this "hotel" twice in early 2008. I think I can offer something of an explanation for the pretty diverse range of scores here. I stayed here twice, in three different rooms, and found a very diverse range of conditions. Obviously, this is a very cheap place (by NY standards) on the upper west side, so it's not... More

Not being the richest of travelers I sought out the cheapest hotel, I'd read some poor reviews but it wasn't so bad, I had a double bed, fridge, microwave, cable tv, shower and toilet, as I was on the 15th floor the water pressure wasn't the highest, It's better to take an off peak shower to get decent water pressure.... Stayed at Dexter house as group of four girls and it was the cheapest place by £300 each to stay for a family room with en-suite. After reading lots of disturbing reviews, we were very anxious upon arrival but were all pleasantly surprised. Whilst I would describe the experience as 'no-frills', its definitely worth the money we paid. The bathroom... More
