Andy and Ida have created a special place. "Relaxed" is the term that comes to mind. Great time with family. Beautiful, intimate, lodge. The Gunflint Trail is absolutely beautiful in Winter. We have a summer cabin nearby and I Big Bear is perfect for our family in the Winter. (18 people)

Our visits to Big Bear Lodge and Cabins are always too short no matter how long our trip. I always feel totally at ease in the cabins and lodge rooms. There's something about the property I can't explain - pure comfort and ease might come close. The lodge is so cozy and inviting. The cabins are cute and have everything...

Our third trip to Big Bear Lodge this year was absolutely wonderful. Spending time around the fire reminiscing with family was a great way to spend a winter afternoon around the lodge fireplace. The quiet peaceful atmosphere is something you notice the moment you step out of your car. Words can not describe the hospitality and kindness shared by Andy...

Well maintained lodge and cabins in beautiful location. We've stayed in each of the five cabins over the past many years and all have been great in their distinctive ways. The owners are lovely and welcoming. Especially magical in winter!

We spent a lovely weekend in October showing our friends, originally from New Your, the glories of the North Shore and the Gunflint Trail. We chose to stay at Big Bear Lodge in two of the upstairs rooms. They were comfortable rooms with all the amenities one needs for a weekend or longer. The four of us had the cozy...

This is by far the best place I have ever stayed. Aside from the wildlife, peaceful setting, and great view of the lake, Andy and Ida have thought of everything. My boyfriend and I stayed in Cabin 4. I believe this is the smallest cabin they have. While small, we never felt cramped during our three night stay. The weather...

We love the cozy cabins! Andy & Ida are always welcoming, friendly and ready to give advice on good hikes, where to find moose, etc. Every year we can see where they have kept improving and adding new features. We had a wonderful, relaxing week and already can't wait for next year!

My husband and I vacation on the Gunflint Trail each October and like the adventure of staying in a different lodge each year. This October we chose the Big Bear Lodge. This is now our favorite lodge on the Gunflint. All Gunflint lodges have met our expectations, but the Big Bear Lodge is one we will definitely re-visit. The decor...

My husband and I returned for our 2nd trip to Big Bear Lodge in September. We stayed the first 3 nights in the lodge. It was very comfortable, private, and homey feeling. Andy and Ida make it feel like it's your home too. Beautifully decorated with lots of reading nooks, areas to play games, a beautiful fireplace and a kitchen...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Big Bear Lodge is a small and unique resort located on Poplar Lake, just off the historic Gunflint Trail in the Arrowhead Region of northeastern Minnesota. The resort is one of five founding resorts on the Trail dating back to the early 1930's. Our traditional one-room cabins have warm wood throughout with log beams, and fireplaces or wood-burning stoves. There are 5 full housekeeping cabins, and a newly refurbished lodge which was completed in 2014. In the lodge there is a small dining area with bar where you can savor one of our made from scratch homemade pizzas, or a duck or elk burger along with a locally crafted beer or a glass of wine. The lodge has some unique features including 2 large Rumsford fireplaces built by a local artisan out of native stones, a lounge on the main floor, gift shop, and a lounge/library on the loft level. Three cozy beautiful guest rooms are on the upper level two with views of the lake, all have private 3/4 baths, and a private entrance. All cabins have modern amenities, including a full kitchen, and 3/4 bath. Lakeside sits a handcrafted sauna free for guests to enjoy. Poplar Lake has 4 BWCA entry points and we offer free canoe usage for those who like a casual day on the lake. Big Bear is a four season resort - 3 lodge guest rooms are available and 3 of our cabins are open for winter enthusiasts. This is a terrific area for those who want to get away from it all, relax reconnect with nature and enjoy great fishing, hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, fabulous sunsets and unsurpassed star lit nights all in the beautiful Superior National Forest just outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area. ... more   less
