My family and I just returned from our trip to Big Bear Resort. I had made a blunder on my calendar and missed our weekend up north. No worries, Andy allowed us a weekend the following month to make up for it. We had an excellent time...Andy and Ida are very friendly, and run a first rate resort. We stayed...

Our group of 4 adults and one pup loved our two-night stay at Big Bear Lodge. We slept in cabin #3 which had 2 queen size bunk beds and a futon. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed for making food, and we enjoyed hanging in the sauna and walking on the frozen lake. We spent one afternoon skiing...

This is my second time being at Big Bear Lodge, and it has only gotten better! I was there for a snowmobile trip and the lodge has very easy access to the Gunflint Trail and allows you to quickly explore the wonderful trail system they have in Cook County. Both the staff and the buildings are amazing! I can't wait...

This has been a great return (year 3) - and although Andy and Ida don't have control over the weather, they certainly make a snowy, winter weekend a cozy retreat. We had great access to ski trails and the warmth of a one of a kind fireplace gathering space to return to. I love their commitment to a light touch...

Andy and Ida have created a special place. "Relaxed" is the term that comes to mind. Great time with family. Beautiful, intimate, lodge. The Gunflint Trail is absolutely beautiful in Winter. We have a summer cabin nearby and I Big Bear is perfect for our family in the Winter. (18 people)

Our visits to Big Bear Lodge and Cabins are always too short no matter how long our trip. I always feel totally at ease in the cabins and lodge rooms. There's something about the property I can't explain - pure comfort and ease might come close. The lodge is so cozy and inviting. The cabins are cute and have everything...

Our third trip to Big Bear Lodge this year was absolutely wonderful. Spending time around the fire reminiscing with family was a great way to spend a winter afternoon around the lodge fireplace. The quiet peaceful atmosphere is something you notice the moment you step out of your car. Words can not describe the hospitality and kindness shared by Andy...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Big Bear Lodge is a small and unique resort located on Poplar Lake, just off the historic Gunflint Trail in the Arrowhead Region of northeastern Minnesota. The resort is one of five founding resorts on the Trail dating back to the early 1930's. Our traditional one-room cabins have warm wood throughout with log beams, and fireplaces or wood-burning stoves. There are 5 full housekeeping cabins, and a newly refurbished lodge which was completed in 2014. In the lodge there is a small dining area with bar where you can savor one of our made from scratch homemade pizzas, or a duck or elk burger along with a locally crafted beer or a glass of wine. The lodge has some unique features including 2 large Rumsford fireplaces built by a local artisan out of native stones, a lounge on the main floor, gift shop, and a lounge/library on the loft level. Three cozy beautiful guest rooms are on the upper level two with views of the lake, all have private 3/4 baths, and a private entrance. All cabins have modern amenities, including a full kitchen, and 3/4 bath. Lakeside sits a handcrafted sauna free for guests to enjoy. Poplar Lake has 4 BWCA entry points and we offer free canoe usage for those who like a casual day on the lake. Big Bear is a four season resort - 3 lodge guest rooms are available and 3 of our cabins are open for winter enthusiasts. This is a terrific area for those who want to get away from it all, relax reconnect with nature and enjoy great fishing, hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, fabulous sunsets and unsurpassed star lit nights all in the beautiful Superior National Forest just outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area. ... more   less
