I have to agree with all the other reviewers - this is a fantastic place to stay. I was in cabin 4 - clean, tidy, comfortable, easily walkable to the centre of Custer with it's assortment of dining and shopping and "the Lost Sock" laundrette! There are TVs, not flat screen but who cares, just look at the views and...

Stopped at sunset because we needed a clean, pet friendly, mom and pop for one night. Although Ann had no cabins available for us, she immediately described what was close by and actually called another motel to make sure they could accommodate us. We were so impressed with her extra effort to help us out that although we didn't stay,...

My sister and I stayed with Ann & John for two weeks, using Custer, SD as our home base for several activities in the area. We climbed Crazy Horse Monument, Black Elk Peak, attended the annual Buffalo Roundup and walked many trails in Custer State Park, all convenient drives from the Shady Rest Motel. With the extended stay, having a...

Traveled to South Dakota mid September 2016. Spent 2 nights at the Shady Rest. Very nice owners. Older property. Nice and comfortable cabin. Enjoyed our stay. Would stay again. Not a cookie cutter property.

This is a great place to stay if you are wanting to see the black hills. Its close to lots, the cabins were clean and comfortable. The owner was very friendly and helpful. The rates were great too. And there are several good eating spots a stones throw away

This was our 2nd stay with John and Ann at the Shady Rest. We stayed in The Lodge again. The space is great, clean and comfortable. Ann & John are great hosts. They are extremely accommodating and have the best suggestions for hikes and spots that get you away from the crowds and are not typical tourist spots! When we...

Interesting place, convenient to downtown restaurants. Cabins are very small and baths are smaller. If it was just my wife and I it would have been fine, but we also had my mother in law who has mobility issues. The stairs to the cabins are significant and not always level or of even height. The proprietors were great and very...

Gracious hostes, vey accomadating and give great local history of the town and sites to see in and around Custer. If you are a rock hound Ann will defiantly send you a good location to hunt for rocks or pan for gold. The cabins make a good central spot to go see all the spots and is very easy to...

I hesitated to rate this property with 5 stars since it is basically a modest facility in which small cottages are grouped closely together- but staying here was one of the nicest experiences of our memorable trip to South Dakota. As noted by other reviewers, the owner Ann is extraordinary- gracious, warm, a wonderful source of advice about the area;...
